    Lecturer (Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture: Department of Fashion Design)

    Job Description:

    The Department of Fashion Design offers an undergraduate BA Fashion Design as well a Diploma in Fashion Production. The Department also offers postgraduate programs in Design from Honours to Doctoral levels. The successful incumbent will engage with both undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision in department program offerings. In addition, the successful incumbent is expected to enhance research and annually contribute to accredited research outputs.

    Responsibilities:

    • Discipline-specific teaching in Fashion Design and Fashion Production at undergraduate and postgraduate levels 
    • Contribute to the successful design, delivery, and development of blended curricula within the subject areas (i.e., Pattern and Garment construction and discipline-specific theory in fashion-related Quality and Operations and Business Management)
    • Drive industry, outreach, community engagement, and muti-disciplinary projects 
    • Coordination and contribution toward integrated and muti-disciplinary teaching and learning
    • Coordination of a program level and module(s)
    • Perform administrative and other ad hoc duties as required
    • To be active in research and contribute to accredited publications (textual and/or creative output) as per UJ requirements

    Minimum requirements

    • Master’s degree in Fashion Design or equivalent
    • A minimum of 2 years’ experience teaching Pattern and Garment construction and discipline-specific theory in fashion-related Quality and Operations and Business Management in a tertiary environment 
    • Experience teaching at all levels in a tertiary environment
    • Deep knowledge of Pattern and Garment construction 
    • Deep knowledge of discipline-specific theory (i.e., Fashion-related Quality and Operations and Business Management)
    • Evidence of a teaching and learning portfolio demonstrating innovative blended teaching methodologies that focus on decolonization and 4IR in the discipline

    • Good organisation, planning, and writing skills
    • Strong interpersonal skills that acknowledge different cultural perspectives
    • The ability to work collegially in a team context
    • Good problem-solving skills
    • The ability to adapt to changing circumstances
    • Proactive engagement with and implementation of new teaching and learning approaches to align with changing circumstances

    Recommendations:

    • Experience in postgraduate supervision
    • Versatile skillset relating to Computer Aided Design and Computer Patternmaking
    • Contributions to community outreach and multi-disciplinary projects
    • PhD/PhD registration
