    Manager Geology - Modderfontein

    The Geology Manager is accountable for leading the design, execution and monitoring of the South Deep integrated operational geology strategy incorporating Exploration, Production Geology, and Mineral Resource Estimation.  Drawing from an established mine geology track record, the incumbent initiates and leads the technical evaluation and optimisation of existing and new geological methodologies, techniques and technologies to drive efficient operational delivery including legal/regulatory compliance aligned to operational best practice.  As a senior Manager, the successful incumbent adopts accountability for embedding a values-based culture of safety, productivity and respectful engagement in all aspects of operational delivery.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Postgraduate qualification in the Mineral Resource Management Discipline such as BSc (Hons) Geology BSc (Hons) Geostatistics etc.
    • Qualified/ Competent Person for reporting Mineral Resources and affiliation with a professional organisation such as GSSA or SACNASP or any recognised professional organisations
    • At least 15 years  experience in operational Geology / Mineral Resources Management, of which 5 should be in a middle management capacity
    • Demonstrated experience in leading large and diverse teams toward sustained high performance
    • Demonstrated understanding and application of technical career development and knowledge transfer / best practice sharing
    • Proven ability to apply a systematic, knowledge-based problem-solving approach and structured methodologies (such as root cause analysis and statistical analysis) to investigate risks and opportunities to create effective, value-add technical solutions
    • Track record of successful liaison at senior levels with suppliers, regulatory bodies, community stakeholders, research institutions and industry associations
    • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

    Key Competencies:

    • Proven track record in mine production geology, geological modelling, resource estimation, orebody evaluation, sampling/assaying and mine-to-mill reconciliation
    • Established QA/QC capability in sample quality, database integrity and block model integrity
    • Experienced in developing relevant reports in accordance with SAMREC, JORC mineral reporting standards (and other ROPO codes)
    • Track record in the discovery of new resources and evaluation
    • Experience in developing and maintaining spatial geological, structural and block models
    • Advanced operational safety leadership experience with demonstrated safety delivery record
    • Advanced proficiency in applicable legislative, safety, health & environmental requirements and standards

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Participate in, and contribute towards the formulation and execution of the South Deep various safety, health, environment and Risk Management campaigns
    • Collaboratively evaluate, design and execute the South Deep Geology Strategy aligned to the Life of Mine Plan ensuring an integrated Geology Value Chain execution programme covering Exploration, Production Geology and Mineral Resource Estimation
    • Evaluate and refine the Mineral Resource Exploration Strategy to optimise resource identification, replacement in line with the strategic Life of Mine Plan
    • Continuously evaluate and optimise resource delineation and grade control programmes and, implement remediation interventions as required
    • Develop and embed standardised geological practices for mine geology, geological modelling, resource estimation, exploration drilling, ore sampling/assaying and mine-to-mill reconciliation
    • Develop and maintain all spatial geological data such as structural block models while maintaining systems to optimise exploration delivery, diamond drilling, resource modelling and estimation,
    • Conduct appropriate research on emerging geological leading practice to identify potential methodologies, techniques and technologies to optimise application, improve efficiency and geological confidence at South Deep
    • Collaboratively develop and oversee the application of operational policies, processes, standards, and practices to embed the delivery of technical excellence in all aspects of the discipline
    • Refine and continuously improve QA/QC standards and processes to enhance sample quality, database and block model integrity across the geology value chain
    • Participate / lead regular and ad hoc short, medium and long-term operational planning and scheduling sessions with a focus on actively identifying and collaboratively solving operational delivery and value chain optimisation challenges
    • Lead the coordination of geological support to the Mining and Metallurgy departments ensuring optimal data-driven analysis to enable detailed mine planning, scheduling and ore characterization
    • Review and approve relevant drill plans, development plans, operational and planning activities
    • Co-ordinate, review and oversee the preparation and publication of Annual Resource Statement in capacity of Competent Person ensuring alignment with relevant mineral reporting codes and standards such as SAMREC, JORC, ROPOs, etc.
    • Effective contract management resulting in excellent safety and planned productivities
    • Prepare and manage the development of department budgets, project expenditure plans/business case formulation, etc. and manage operational efficiencies as required
