    Manager Operations UG

    Job Purpose:

    • To manage the Mining Operations' disciplines, systems and processes in order to achieve operational objectives in a safe and efficient manner and in line with legislative requirements

    The Appointee should:

    • Be in possession of a valid Mine Manager Certificate of Competency
    • Be in possession of a valid NQF 7 (Bachelor’s degree or an Advanced Diploma) in Mining Engineering
    • Have at least 7 years’ experience in a related role, of which 3 years should have been at a management level or experience in a functional/specialist area.
    • Be in possession of a valid Blasting Certificate
    • Be medically fit to work in the specific business area.
    • Have a Clear security screening record.
    • Have a valid driver’s license (if applicable)

    Advantageous Qualifications:

    • Level 7: Bachelors Degree and Advanced Diplomas Bachelor Degree Mining

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Underground Operations Management  Lead and manage the Underground Operations teams, systems and processes.  Keep up to date with latest Underground Operations systems, processes and best practices and make suitable recommendations.  Analyse and interpret Underground Operations data and reports and take corrective actions as required  Provide effective problem-solving support to the Underground Operations teams.  Chair the daily Mining meeting.  Ensure that all necessary Underground Operations resources (personnel, equipment and materials) are available as required.  Manage the Shaft schedule.  Report Underground Operations information.
    • Underground Operations Projects  Lead and drive Underground Operations continuous improvement projects and initiatives.  Identify Underground Operations improvement opportunities and implement improvement projects and initiatives.  Manage project teams of Underground Operations project to deliver project objectives.  Manage stakeholder relations on projects.  Approve Underground Operations projects and ensure alignment to Mining Strategy and business objectives.  Contribute to project initiation, scope definition and scope change control.  Participate in the estimation and preparation of cost budget for projects or sub projects and monitor and control actual costs against budget.  Contribute to the management of project risk within own field of expertise.  Develop simple schedules to facilitate effective project execution.  Manage project communication for a project.  Monitor, evaluate and communicate simple project schedules.  Support the project environment and activities to deliver project objectives.  Identify, suggest and implement corrective actions to improve quality of project work.  Plan, organise and facilitate project meetings and workshops.  Conduct project documentation management to support project processes.  Provide procurement administration support to projects.  Provide assistance in implementing and assuring project work meets quality requirements.  Sign off Underground Operations Projects.
    • Mining Risk Management  Manage and assess Mining related risksand incorporate mitigating controls.  Approve the Mining component of the risk register.
    • Stakeholder Relations  Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders across the organisation and externally at all levels and cross-functionally.  Ensuring open communication channels with all relevant stakeholders.  Sourcing, contracting and negotiating with service providers.  Liaising with the necessary entities on any environmental management related requirements and alignment where applicable.  Collaborating with external service providers regarding the design and implementation of tools to enhance processes.
    • Financial Management  Managing the finances of the Division to achieve Organisational objectives. Working Cost Budgets:  Setting and approving budgeting parameters for the Division in line with business requirements and financial objectives.  Approving operational expenditure.  Formulating monthly and annual budgets. Cost Savings:  Leading and driving cost saving and cash conservation initiatives.  Remaining competitive on the global cost curve for surface operations. Capital Budgets:  Prepare and present business cases for Capital approval.  Cost Capital Expenditure and process Application for Financial Expenditure (AFE).  Manage and report on Capital budgets and expenditure. Expenditure:  Approve operational expenditure.  Manage expenditure against the budget.  Report on variances from the budget and the reasons for those variances.
    • Building a values-based organisational culture  Actively support and meaningfully participate in the execution of the segment specific organisational development plan. This support will manifest in the targeted shift in culture as described by a valid culture assessment.
    • ESG Compliance  Align to international responsible mining principles.  SA Gold Operations: Align to World Gold Council (WGC) Responsible Gold Mining Principles (RGMPs).  SA PGM Operations: Enhance Together for Sustainability (eTfS) initiative.
    • SHE Compliance  Maintain and comply with SHE standards within the work environment.  Approve high-level risk assessments and take appropriate action.  Lead risk assessments and take appropriate action.  Ensure adherence to all company policies and procedures. SHE Management:  Instil a culture of SHE leadership within the underground Operations in line with Organisational objectives.  Participate in regional/local bodies and decision-making forums in the process developing a business relevant external environment, that will result in the longer-term sustainability of the Division. Quality Management System (QMS):  Approve department’s documents.  Comply with requirements of the Quality Management System.
    • Focus on safe production & operational excellence  Focus on safety and health as well as operational excellence  Improve our position on global industry cost curve
