    Part-time: Disability Lab Assistant

    • The Directorate of Higher Education and Support in the Department of Student Development and Support (SDS) has a three-month part-time position for a Disability Lab Assistant based at the Pretoria campus.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    • Applicants are required to submit together with the CVs, a standardized application form available from the university intranet as well as recently certified copies of qualifications and identity documents. Failure to comply with this instruction will disqualify the candidate. Further note that candidates may be expected to make a presentation or undergo competency testing.

    Critical Performance Areas:

    • Providing multimodal support to students with disabilities and administration.
    • Participate in the service delivery of supporting students with disabilities
    • Administer and maintain the Disability Lab, assistive devices, software, and specialised equipment, including the use of a braille machine
    • Monitoring students when they study in the lab
    • Conduct registration interviews, provide referrals, and facilitate reasonable accommodations and concessions.
    • Train students in the effective use of assistive technologies and maintain asset registers.
    • Prepare accessible learning materials in alternative formats.
    • Coordinate and facilitate accessible tests and examinations, including readers, scribes, amanuenses, and invigilation support.
    • Compile and maintain student records, databases, statistics, and accommodation documentation and ensure compliance with institutional policies and procedures.
    • Coordinate disability awareness campaigns, workshops, and outreach programmes.
    • Liaise with students, staff, and external stakeholders regarding disability support services.
    • Participate in HEDSA activities, arrange orientation and mobility for students, and Student Development and Support (SDS) initiatives.
    • Provide holistic support to students with disabilities to promote access, academic success, and retention and liaising with prospective and registered students
    • Performing other SDS related activities

    Minimum requirements:

    • A three to four-year relevant qualification in the field of Education, or Inclusive Education and any relevant disability qualification.
    • Three years’ experience in providing student development and support services, including disability support and the use of assistive technologies, with proven experience in working with students with disabilities in a higher education environment to promote accessibility, inclusion, and student success.

    • Assistive technologies and accessible learning environments.
    • Student development and support practices.
    • Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning principles.
    • Excellent communication, facilitation and stakeholder engagement skills.
    • Advanced computer literacy.
