    Principal Technical Assistant

    Duties/Pligte        

    • Supporting and assisting the Principal Technical Officer.
    • Assisting in various undergraduate courses, particularly with the preparation of undergraduate practicals and the housekeeping (cleaning) of laboratories.
    • Supporting academic staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students.
    • Maintaining and cleaning laboratories, instruments and glassware.
    • Controlling and managing laboratory apparatus, chemical waste and chemical stores.
    • Responsible for and assisting with laboratory safety.
    • Performing routine safety inspections and replacing consumables for students in the laboratories.
    • Liaising with the University's service departments.
    • Upkeep of (cleaning) buildings with emphasis on the research and undergraduate laboratories and general areas.
    • Loading and updating chemical stock and chemical information on the chemical inventory management system.
    • Assisting the line manager with the asset register.
    • Ad hoc administrative work.

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes        

    • Matric certificate or an equivalent technical qualification.
    • At least two years' practical work experience gained within a comparable laboratory environment.
    • Knowledge of analytical equipment and management of general chemicals.

    Recommendation/Aanbeveling        

    • Matric certificate subjects such as physical sciences and mathematics.
    • Interest in chemistry.
    • Knowledge of a laboratory management system.
    • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety procedures in a laboratory environment.
    • Knowledge of chemical storage and handling procedures.
    • Willingness to learn new skills and to undergo further training.
    • Computer literate.
    • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team.
    • Good communication skills in Afrikaans or English.
