    Production Supervisor - Brits

    Role purpose 

    • Provide a high level knowledge of Fill and Pack and or Formulation within a manufacturing environment with combined maintenance expertise.
    • Have the ability to lead the Formulation and or Fill and Pack teams with some knowledge of chemistry and batch processes.
    • Provide day to day leadership and direction to a shift team, ensuring activities are carried out in a safe and efficient manner (includes coordinating and compliance with all safety, health, environmental, quality, maintenance, processing, efficiency and continuous improvement guidelines).
    • Deliver to the Production plan ensuring compliance to all Syngenta HSE and Quality standards.
    • Lead, manage, supervise and develop Senior process controllers, process controllers, process operators, learnerships and temporary staff (seasonals).
    • Lead Root Cause Analysis in the Production environment.
    • Lead process safety investigations in the Production environment.
    • Ensure safety observations are raised and improvements in the different plants are implemented.
    • Optimize and continuously improve Production processes using continuous improvement methodology for monitoring of the installations.
    • Drive and manage process designs and efficiency projects within the required plants.
    • Drive and manage small multidisciplinary projects by using Continuous Improvent tools (OPEX).
    • Gather and analyze data to contribute to the Production department’s OEE, down time, initiation of Hopper projects and Continuous Improvement.
    • Must be able to work different hours and shifts throughout the year.
    • Take full accountability for LOTO, PTW,PRA actions and WRA within the respective plants.
    • Be part of HSE committee, Firstaiders and/or Firefighters team.
    • Successful candidate will be appointed as 8.2.i under section 8 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.

    Accountabilities

    • Organizes work according to plan, schedule and priorities, including transfer of instructions between teams and shifts.
    • Take all appropriate actions to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Production unit.
    • Supervise and ensure that solutions and corrective actions are correctly performed on  installations.
    • Ensure compliance with HSE and Quality standards and propose improvements in the various activities related to its function.
    • Follow and measure the performance of team members (performance management), including performance reviews and constant feedback. (Pause to Talks)
    • Provides training and competency assessments for his/her team and guarantees the skills of the team members.
    • Ensure cleanliness and tidiness at the workplaces, maintain the 5S and other Lean standards.
    • Assignment and supervision of work activities, ensuring distribution of work, planning of personnel and material requirements and application.
    • Conducting staff meetings, support cooperation within the team between shifts, checking working time and ensuring full employment of employees. 
    • Ensure continuous improvement sustainability of the operations (OEE, SMED, Visual boards, Management disciplines, etc).
    • Co-ordinate maintenance activities to efficiently minimize unscheduled downtime and delays.
    • Actively lead and support shifts on Operational Excellence efforts and initiatives.
    • Ensure timely communication with the appropriate management levels for any issues that need to be escalated.
    • Prepare reports on shift results and performance (employees, material usage, Production plan adherence, incidents etc.). Analyze reports to develop and implement actions for continuous improvement.
    • Ensure OHS guidelines are followed in respective work areas.
    • Manage all documents related to specific work areas.
    • Drive Capex projects in respective areas.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, experience & capabilities

    • Trade certificate with more than 2 years supervising experience.
    • A Degree/Diploma in Mechnical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering disciplines or equivalent professional qualification will be considered.
    • Maintenance and hands-on technical experience will be an advantage.  
    • Demonstrated understanding of operational process hazards.
    • Typically has greater than 5 years relevant experience in chemical industry or on Hazardous industrial facility (preferably Formulation, Packaging in chemical industry).
    • Microsoft Office experience / certificate. (Intermediate or expert level in Excel will be an advantage)
    • Rules and regulations for health, safety, industrial safety and fire protection.
    • Good understanding of batch formulation, filling and packing process, material safety data sheet, stock control, testing and reporting. Understanding of operation standard & efficiency to optimize resources to meet manufacturing objectives, agreed target.  Understanding of the shift work and ability to ensure that Production objectives are met safely in targeted efficiency.
    • Effective communication skills and cross functional collaboration.
