Job Summary 

You will be working as Senior Mechanical Designer and will be part of Electrification business area for Distribution Solutions division based in Longmeadow, South Africa. In this role you will be reporting to Senior Engineering Manager and will be responsible to create, modify and analyze the design of equipment, system or installations, including specifications for manufacturing, fabrication or construction on assignments of medium to high complexity using established solutions

Your responsibilities

• Creating / reviewing complete project documentation for conformity, safety and quality assurance, reviewing, adjusting design as necessary based on output of design to meet the contractual obligations, optimizing designs to meet updated standards, incorporating new products, components and functionalities
• Leading technology transfers for new portfolio in the division, seeking feedback from customer for driving and delivering improvement of technical solutions, contributing to preparation of specific aspects of design assignments to meet the contractual obligations while adhering to relevant standards, safety and quality
• Applying advance Design Thinking / Design for Excellence concepts in projects, performing Project Peer-Reviews utilizes checklists to perform design verification according to applicable standards and engineering guidelines, actively contributing and sharing experiences in workshops pertaining to engineering design, tools and processes
• Sharing best practices lessons-learned documentation across different projects, creating / reviewing standard processes and tools to promote the reuse of technical solutions innovation and productivity in the team, ensuring 2D and 3D and other modelling tools usage to promote innovation and productivity, conducting and completing RCA reports on mechanical design issues or customer CCRP’s
• Assessing and addressing technical risk and opportunities with PM, reporting and conducting safety / quality / program / cost issues to Project Manager (s) along with recommendations, for resolution, ensuring Bill of Material (BOM) for the project meets contractual obligations and project gross margin requirements by not generating Project Left-Over Material (PLOM)
• Conducting RCA if there is PLOM, identifying and implementing variation requests to support contract claims based on the approval from Project Manager, creating work plans and cost estimates for the portfolio of projects in consultation with respective Project managers and ensuring quality deliverables on time at target cost
• Assisting planning during unavailable time to update planning schedule, following up with suppliers and buyers on material ordered, releasing projects to production after confirmation that 95% of material is available, preparing RFQ’s to meet contractual requirements and providing technical evaluation of supplier proposals
• Collaborating with the Supply Chain function and the Project Manager (s), together with supply chain lead cost savings projects, coordinating with manufacturing and testing function to ensure the designs are appropriately manufactured / staged and tested, ensuring the engineering deliverables as built are updated
• Ensuring all design process documentation is complete during the manufacturing stage and after completion, coordinating with commissioning / service functions to ensure the designs are appropriately installed and commissioned (if applicable as part of the contract), ensuring the engineering deliverables are updated post installation and commissioning

Your background

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineer
• Minimum 5 years of experience in Solidworks, SAP, RCA, Quality, & Advanced Excel
• Must have own vehicle and be flexible to travel
• Should have leadership skills, time management, customer and relationship management experience.
• Preference will be given to EE candidates.
