    Senior Psychology V000262 (Re-advertisement)

    Job description

    • Rendering psychological services to prospective and current students to ensure optimal psycho-social support and development. 

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Coordinating and Provision of Therapeutic Services

    •  Coordination and provision of comprehensive psychotherapeutic support to students. 
    •  Psychological screening, assessment, diagnosis, and case formulation.
    •  Development of different protocols for psychotherapeutic systems at SCD.
    •  Adherence to the HPCSA required continued professional development (CPD) regulations and performance management as determined.
    •  Coordination of therapeutic interventions of counselling staff members.
    •  Coordination of counselling: emotional support services by Psychology Master's Degree students.
    •  Development or revision of protocols for therapeutic systems.
    •  Rendering of therapeutic interventions to students (online-, in-person, psychotherapeutic- and psycho-educative, individual- and/or in a group format).

    Coordinating and Provision of Crisis Interventions

    •  Attend to crises during office hours, and attend to crises after offices hours, and oversight of crises interventions conducted by SCD on a rotational basis.
    •  Training Junior Psychologists/Counsellors on crisis intervention.
    •  Training of House Committees, SCC, Peer Helpers, Residence House Parents, and training to external members that form part of the emergency procedures off-campus. 
    •  Regular revision and improvement of the inter- and intra-campus crisis intervention protocols.
    •  Rendering crisis intervention and short-term trauma interventions to Vanderbijlpark Campus (VC).

    Student Development 

    •  Development of pro-active workshops. 
    •  Facilitate SCD training and development workshops across the various campuses of NWU during office hours and occasionally after hours and on Saturdays.
    •  Liaise with various divisions on campus and coordinate professional service delivery.
    •  Psycho-educative topic identification.
    •  Inter- and intra-Faculty referrals and service delivery.

    Career Counselling & Psychometric Assessments and Feedback

    •  Facilitation of career counselling for scholars, students, and prospective students.
    •  Facilitation of psychometric assessments and feedback for scholars, students, and prospective students.

    Student Academic and Course Development

    •  Interviewing students with academic terminations, academic warnings, and academic disciplinary outcomes, and refer for professional assistance where necessary. 
    •  Provision of academic and qualification support to students as is feasible. 
    •  Development and facilitation of psycho-educative interventions to students on related topics.

    Support for Students with Disabilities 

    •  Active participation in panel discussions and contributions to the decision-making pertaining to the concession of students.
    •  In collaboration with the DRU Coordinator (and Faculty Advisor), assist with temporary applications.
    •  Chairing of Concession Panel discussions, when required.
    •  Collaboration with the Disability Rights Unit (DRU) Coordinator regarding concessions applications.
    •  Moderation of completed concessions documents prior to distribution to students. Annual revision and improvement of concession documentation, in collaboration with DRU Coordinator.

    Supervision and Training

    •  Supervision of psychologists and psychologists-in-training as part of internship or practical training requirements where relevant.
    •  Liaison and coordination of practical training opportunities of Psychology Masters' degree students at SCD. 
    •  Supervision of Psychology Master’s degree students.
    •  Counselling psychology internship development, application, and coordination.
    •  Administration of selection and admission testing where necessary.
    •  Assist with selection procedures for various courses (psychometrics, panel interviews, etc.) when required.

    Professional Administration 

    •  Administrative tasks in daily routine such as diary management, professional statistics record keeping, process notes, report writing, referral letters, email responses, telephonic enquiries, and general enquiries which ensure confidentiality.
    •  Participation in departmental meetings, practitioner meetings, and committees when required.

    Community Engagement (CE), Research and Liaison

    •  Conduct research projects as identified or required by trend developments and statistical analysis of departmental functions.
    •  Participation in CE projects and initiatives where relevant.

    Ad Hoc Acting Management SCD

    •  Support to SCD Senior Manager with management tasks, meetings, and feedback reports where relevant.
    •  Completion of additional tasks assigned by the Executive Director: Student Life, Director: Student Life or SCD Senior Manager.
    • Minimum requirements
    •  Master’s Degree in Psychology in Clinical or Counselling Psychology. 
    •  Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist.

    EXPRIENCE:

    •  Five years’ demonstrable experience in rendering psychotherapy, psychometric assessments, feedback, and report writing.
    •  Three years’ demonstrable experience in rendering crisis interventions and approaches.
    •  Three years’ demonstrable experience in development and implementation of psycho-educative interventions including group work.
    •  Three years ‘demonstrable experience in the coordination and supervision of psychotherapeutic services.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES:

    •  A PhD in Psychology or related field (NQF Level 10).
    •  Southern African Association for Counselling and Development in Higher Education (SAACDHE) and/or Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA).

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    •  Computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office/365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and One Drive) and other relevant software.
    •  Proficiency in the use of social media and online/cloud platforms.
    •  Demonstrated knowledge in current psychological theory and practice, supervision, and crisis intervention.
    •  Knowledge in peer–counsellor systems and training of Peer Helpers.
    •  Knowledge in practice management.
    •  Knowledge in development and coordination of training interventions for young adults or students. 
    •  Knowledge in current research methodology and research project development.
    •  Knowledge of change management.
    •  Knowledge of the requirements associated with operating within a counselling service environment.

    KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

    •  Good problem-solving skills and ability to use independent judgment to manage and impart confidential information.
    •  Ability to make professional decisions and work with others.
    •  Good training and development skills.
    •  Able to critically reflect on all aspects of own contribution to the role and a commitment to continuous improvement and creative ways of working within a multidisciplinary team.
    •  Good administration and reporting skills, including report writing.
    •  Ability to work within strict ethical guidelines as prescribed by the HPCSA Board for Psychologists.
    •  Available to work flexibly (after hours) and travel as appropriate to meet the needs of NWU.
