Senior Scientific Officer at University of Cape Town

The Department of Geological Sciences invites applications for a Senior Scientific Officer position to maintain and
administer departmental teaching collections, equipment used in practical work and field work (including
assistance with Departmental vehicle pool) and Departmental IT support.

Requirements for the job:

•   BSc (Honours) or equivalent in geology or geochemistry.
•   A sound knowledge of petrographic microscopes.
•   Exposure to geology student practicals and fieldwork.
•   Must demonstrate initiative, have the ability to work independently, and display good interpersonal skills.
•   Demonstrable organizational skills and hands-on technical/IT experience
•   Driver’s licence.

Responsibilities:

•   Maintain and administer teaching microscopes, and teaching collections for use in practicals.
•   Maintain student PC lab, including printers.
•   Provide basic IT support to the Department, including maintaining Departmental website.
•   Liaise with asset auditors and maintain the register.
•   Administer map collection, publication list and loaned geological equipment.
•   Manage photocopier, data projectors and keys.
•   Responsible for photocopying for large undergraduate courses.
•   Management of Departmental field station in Laingsburg before and during field trips.
•   Assistance of Departmental technical officers with management of vehicle pool.
