VETERINARIAN (AFTER HOURS) (ONE YEAR CONTRACT)

Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for:

• Rendering after-hours veterinary service at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital Outpatient Clinic in accordance with the duty roster, set up in the following shifts:
• Night shift (20:00 – 08:00 for seven consecutive days); followed by
• Five rest days (off-duty); followed by
• Weekend day shift (two weekend days 08:00 – 20:00); followed by
• Evening shift (16:00 – 20:00 for five consecutive days).
• Diagnostic work-up of and developing therapeutic plans for all new cases presented during the shift;
• Directing students and nursing staff in diagnostic and therapeutic management of after-hours outpatient as well as hospitalised cases;
• Performing basic procedures as well as any procedures required in the emergency situation;
• Discussing relevant aspects of diagnostic work-up and treatment plan with students, using cases as teaching opportunities;
• When required, contact veterinary specialists on duty to discuss cases/request immediate assistance;
• Case record keeping;
• Stock control;
• Control over specified schedule 5 and 6 drugs; and
• Communicating with clients.
   

Minimum Requirements

• BVSc or equivalent;
• Registration with the South African Veterinary Council;
• One year experience in general veterinary practice (with emphasis on small animals).

• Ability to work under pressure and without supervision; and
• Computer literacy.
   

Added Advantages And Preferences

• Previous teaching experience.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
