    Senior Analyst - Pretoria

    Description

    The Competition Commission seeks to appoint a Senior Analyst to join the dynamic team responsible for investigating mergers and acquisitions in the economy with the purpose of preventing mergers and acquisitions that may lead to a substantial prevention or lessening of competition in the economy or have an adverse effect on the public interest.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Duties include, amongst others:

    • To investigate merger cases notified to the Commission in terms of Chapter 3 of the Competition Act, and accompanying Rules and to make recommendations to decision makers,
    • To conduct research and provide advice to decision makers on the impact of mergers in the economy,
    • To monitor merger conditions,
    • To lead, supervise and provide guidance to a small team of merger analysts,
    • To assist the Divisional Manager with the strategic planning, staff management, and development as well as general administration of the Mergers and Acquisitions Division.

    Requirements

    We are looking for a dynamic, hardworking and committed individual who is in possession of:

    • Honours Degree in Economics or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree. 
    • 6-8 years’ experience in a legal environment or experience in economic analysis,
    • 2 years' experience in a management or supervisory position.
    • Prior exposure to competition law/ economics is required.
    • Strategic thinker with strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to exercise sound judgment.

    Other considerations

    • A Master’s degree in Economics or Law will be an added advantage.

    Junior Economist (ERB)

    Description

    The Competition Commission is seeking to recruit dynamic, hard-working and committed individuals to for the Junior Economist in the Economic Research Bureau Division. The applicant should be organised, thorough and enjoy challenging situations. Attention to detail, ensuring quality and standards are met and keeping errors to a minimum are important factors in this position. Researching and gathering facts are an important part of the job.  The successful individuals will participate in economic research in line with the Commission’s mandate to address anti-competitive conduct and evaluate mergers. 

    Duties and Key Responsibilities:

    • Assist with the rigorous economic analysis of competition cases.
    • Contribute to the provision of the theoretical and intellectual platform for the effective implementation of the Competition Act.
    • Advise other divisions with regard to economic underpinnings of competition issues.

    Requirements

    We are looking for a dynamic, hardworking, committed individual who is in possession of: 

    • Applicants MUST have a Master’s Degree in Economics.
    • Training and experience in Microeconomics, Econometrics, Industrial Organization and/or International Trade is considered to be advantageous.
    • Strong analytical skills are essential.
    • Minimum of 1 - 2 years’ work experience in a rigorous economic analysis environment.
    • Knowledge and understanding of the purpose and objectives of the Competition Act, the Competition Commission and the South African economy is highly recommended.
