    Research Assistant Plant Breeding (Three (3) Year Fixed Term Contract) X2 (One Based At Loskop Research Station, Groblersdal; One Based At Roodeplaat, Pretoria) (Roodeplaat)

    Description

    • Performs routine activities related to plant breeding under supervision.
    • Performs sample collection and processing under supervision.
    • Assists with seed harvesting, cleaning, sorting and storage.
    • Assists in coordinating of work activities and supervises allocated resources, if applicable.
    • Adheres to work plans and timeously provide verbal and written feedback on work activities and challenges encountered to supervisor.
    • Provides general research support.
    • Visible compliance with Human Resource policies and procedures and Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.

    Requirements

    • Grade 12 (NQF 4) plus 3 years relevant experience in Crop Protection or Agronomy.
    • Or Grade 10 (NFQ 2) plus 8 years relevant experience in Crop Protection or Agronomy.
    • Relevant experience in cultivation and maintenance of vegetable crops, including land preparations, planting, weeding, harvesting, fertilizer applications and irrigation set-up.
    • Relevant experience in greenhouse sanitation practices, growth media preparations and seedling/plantlet production.
    • Effective utilization of tools, implements and research materials.
    • Competence in herbicide and pesticide applications will be an added advantage.
    • Valid drivers’ license.

    Requirements

    Minimum Bursary Requirements

    • Bachelor's Degree/Honours Degree or NQF Level 8 in Agricultural Sciences or related field
    • Registered or accepted to study for master's qualification in Agricultural Science or a related field in a South African University.
    • Willing to register for Master’s studies in Agricultural Sciences or a related field within two months of appointment.

    Terms

    • After signing a contract; students will be expected to settle their own tuition fees, Registration fees, accommodation, transport, food, and/or any other expenses.
    • Students will be allocated a mentor from the ARC to assist them with real-life research projects for their studies.
    • Students will be expected to attend workplace training during academic holidays and times discusses with the mentor.
    • Payment of the bursary award will be dependent on the submission of a valid proof of registration.
    • Students must be willing to work and study at the same time

    VALUE OF BURSARY PER ANNUM

    • Value: R140,000 per annum (non-taxable), payable in 12 monthly instalments.

    • Conduct research projects under the supervision of ARC scientists.
    • Contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and technology transfer activities.
    • Participate in capacity development initiatives, including mentoring postgraduate students.
    • Engage in collaborative projects aligned with ARC-VIMP research priorities.

    Research Technician: Veterinary (Onderstepoort)

    Description

    • To render a quality analytical/diagnostic service by performing bacteriological tests on veterinary samples in accordance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025.

    These include but not limited to:

    • Performing routine culture, isolation, and identification of bacterial pathogens from animal feed, environmental, or animal samples
    • Performing bio-typing and serotyping of zoonotic bacteria
    • Receiving and recording of samples details in record books and correctly storing samples
    • Planning and execution of diagnostic work
    • Recording results in the appropriate results books and LabWare system
    • Maintenance of reagents and consumable stock
    • Maintenance of the Quality Management system (ISO 17025)
    • Assisting in the improvement and development of new test methods in collaboration with the Researcher/Senior Researcher.
    • Providing research support by giving project input regarding technical detail and carrying out assigned technical tasks.

    Requirements

    • National Diploma in Veterinary Technology.
    • B-Tech: in Veterinary Technology will be added advantage.
    • At least three years’ experience in Bacteriology lab.
    • Professional membership: SAVC registration is compulsory.
    • Knowledge of veterinary bacterial pathogens and diseases.
    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • A driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
