    Research Study Logistics Coordinator (Worcester Campus)

    Research Study Logistics Coordinator (Located in Worcester)  Grade 13.1
    Two-year fixed-term contract with the possibility of extention.

    • This study is sponsored by the Boston Medical Center in Boston, (MA, USA) and is funded by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). This study aims to elucidate the relationship between illicit smoked drug use and Tuberculosis (TB) transmission in the Western Cape.

    Duties

    Specific duties include but are not limited to:

    • Transporting samples around Worcester and from Worcester to Cape Town up to twice weekly;
    • Working with the study team (research study coordinator,  nurses, and research assistants) to assist with participant study visit tracking;
    • Transporting participants to and from study visits;
    • Transporting study participants identified as being ill to the clinic;
    • Preventing protocol violations and maintaining minimum protocol deviations, particularly involving study participants and specimen transport;
    • Reporting all protocol deviations immediately to the field study coordinator;
    • Creating and maintaining logs for sample and participant tracking;
    • Helping the field team to monitor and log quantity and expiration dates of specimen sample supplies, and ensuring timely organisation of sample supplies;
    • Developing methods to improve sample and participant transport procedures, logging and tracking;
    • Being involved with and knowledgeable about the local community in Worcester;
    • Being available for weekly meetings with the field team and international research team.


    Job Requirements

    • High school training;
    • Fluency in English (written and verbal communication);
    • Previous research experience;
    • Previous experience with the transport of biohazardous materials/dangerous goods;
    • The ability to work and be based in Worcester, Western Cape, Monday through Friday;
    • A valid driver's licence. Must be comfortable driving for long periods;
    • The ability to lift and move supplies weighing up to 12 kg.

    Recommendation

    • Matric certificate;
    • Fluency in Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa, or some level of isiXhosa understanding.

    • The Department of Mathematical Sciences is responsible for teaching and research in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at Stellenbosch University. The Computer Science Division is research-active in artificial intelligence and machine learning, automata theory, program analysis, testing, and verification, and computer networks (more information is available on our webpage: www.cs.sun.ac.za).  It is keen to strengthen its position in computer networks.

    Duties

    • Research and publication;
    • Securing research and project funding;
    • Advising and supervising postgraduate students;
    • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate computer science modules;
    • Administrative leadership, including the possibility to act as division head of Computer Science on a rotational basis.


    Job Requirements

    • PhD in Computer Science or a related discipline, with extensive research expertise in computer networks;
    • Proven track record of conference presentations and publication in internationally recognised computer science journals and conference proceedings;
    • Track record of securing research or project funding;
    • Record of successful postgraduate student supervision up to PhD level;
    • Proven national recognition for and international exposure in computer network research;
    • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.

    In addition, for appointment as Professor,

    • Significant international recognition as expert in computer networks;
    • Proven leadership abilities and experience;
    • Proven involvement in academic service which may include, amongst others, referee and/or programme committee member for an international conference, plenary speaker, committee member of a professional society.
    • Applicants are required to submit a detailed research statement and teaching philosophy.
    • Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture on their recent research.

    Part-Time Administrative Officer: Hybrid Learning

    Administrative Officer: Hybrid Learning (Three-year Part-Time (4/8) Contract)

    • Hybrid learning (HL) at SU is a mode of academic course delivery that combines short periods of F2F (face-to-face) contact time between the lecturer and student with significant online learning by the students. SU is expanding its HL offering significantly and requires an administrative assistant to provide general administrative support to the HL project manager in the Division for Learning and Teaching Enhancement.

    Duties        
    General administrative support

    • Providing administrative support to the Hybrid Learning (HL) project manager as required. This may include, but is not limited to, basic record keeping of project-related expenditures, organising project-related documentation, assisting with the compilation of internal reports and HL-related templates;
    • Performing asset administration, as needed;
    • Managing telephonic and email enqueries;
    • Making travel arrangements as required;
    • Arranging workshops and functions as needed.

    Financial administration and budget control

    • Generating financial documents (quotes, invoices and transaction records) as needed;
    • Maintaining effective budget control with regard to purchasing goods and services from the HL project budget, in close collaboration with the HL project manager;
    • Assisting with the annual budgeting process for individual HL-related initiatives;
    • Supporting the HL project manager with quarterly and annual financial reports and invoices.


    Job Requirements        

    • A post-matric qualification in office administration or a relevant field;
    • A minimum of two years’ administrative work experience;
    • Knowledge and experience of financial administration;
    • Excellent computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook);
    • Excellent time management and organisational skills;
    • Good verbal and written communication skills in English;
    • The ability to work independently as well as in a team.
