    IAS Geography Learning Designer

    Description

    The Learning Designer role at the Valenture Institute is primarily responsible for curating, augmenting, creating, and quality assuring secondary school course content and assessments that are suitable for high-touch online delivery. The incumbent will play a vital role in ensuring that the development of content is relevant to the learning cohort, of high quality and; developed within the required timelines and the scope of the project.

    The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Responsibilities:

    • Use subject specifications to ensure that content meets the required examination standards, and determine the adequacy or inadequacy of content.

    • Conduct planning and analysis per subject area to recommend appropriate design solutions and strategies for online delivery.

    • Analyse the characteristics of Valenture’s learning management system (LMS) and emerging technologies and use the unique affordances of these technologies to make design decisions.

    • Transfer textbook-based content into a richly augmented format that meets online delivery objectives.

    • Develop educational content from scratch, making use of various sources, into a richly augmented format that meets online delivery objectives.

    • Research and source appropriate reference materials for the development of courses.

    • Work with subject matter experts and collaborate with production specialists to create targeted content in a wide variety of mediums to complement or support the curriculum.

    • Design and create targeted continuous assessment strategies that support students in their progression towards their summative examinations.

    • Work with project management and various operational stakeholders to ensure that deadlines are adhered to and that project communication takes place in a timely and effective manner.

    • Work on evaluation strategies to review the effectiveness of a design strategy, and review content at set intervals as part of Valenture’s approach to continuous improvement.

    • Perform auxiliary tasks, including, but not limited to briefing in graphics, and tracking the use of external assets.

    • Perform peer reviews across subjects and qualifications.

    • Contribute to department process improvements.

    Requirements

    • A Bachelor's Degree in Education or Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Senior Phase, or related experience in specific subject area

    • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience

    • South African Council for Educators (SACE) registration

    • Experience teaching International IAS Geography curriculum beneficial

    • Demonstrable experience as a Learning Designer, Instructional Designer, or Curriculum Developer

    • Knowledge of digital learning principles and practices

    • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, and build collaborative work relationships

    Teaching Assistant | iBhodi Trust

    The Teaching Assistant for iBhodi Trust’s pioneer class is a key team member working on the iBhodi Trust project. iBhodi Trust is a bold project to create a new blueprint for delivering high quality education throughout South Africa to students who need it most. The first cohort of iBhodi Trust students have been admitted to study an internationally recognised curriculum, delivered entirely online at a dynamic physical classroom set up at Beacon Hill Secondary School in Mitchell’s Plain with 24 computers, high-speed internet and collaborative workstations.

    The Teaching Assistant role is the primary support to the Learning Coach, the frontline custodian of the learning experience for this pioneering class and is responsible for providing personalised support solutions to students and their parents as they work through the Pearson International curriculum (from 1 January 2022, students will be part of UCT Online High School). All subjects are facilitated online.

    The Teaching Assistant is required to work on site in Mitchells Plain with students on a part-time basis. Specifically, the Teaching Assistant is required to be available for an average of three weekdays per week, to be available to supervise the cohort in the event that the Learning Coach is unavailable and to assist during examination cycles. This role reports directly into the iBhodi Trust Learning Coach.

     

    The role:

    Summary:

    • The Teaching Assistant role is responsible for assisting the iBhodi Trust Learning Coach with their student support duties and administrative support. The Teaching Assistant is incredibly passionate about people, especially students, and is always eager to offer support and adapt a positive attitude to solving complex problems. The Teaching Assistant supports the Learning Coach through ongoing engagement, holistic development and removing barriers and obstacles for the students in their care. The Teaching Assistant provides a support role for the iBhodi Trust Learning Coach where needed within the Home Room settings and exercises duty of care at all times.

    Day-to-day responsibilities include:

    • Be deeply committed to the responsibility for duty of care related to the role, ensure that students are supervised at all times during the course of the school day and strictly uphold and abide by all policies and procedures set out by Valenture Institute.
    • Have basic knowledge on how to troubleshoot technical problems.
    • Provide an assessment of critical situations within the learning space and refer them to the Learning Coach
    • Co-facilitate group sessions with students (including Home Room sessions and Learning Compass Sessions) according to predefined programme outline.
    • Be available for certain on-site responsibilities at Beacon Hill from time to time.

    Team responsibilities:

    • Be deeply committed to working as part of the Student Success tea
    • Participate in relevant team meetings
    • Liaise with members of the Student Success team as required

    Requirements

    • Undergraduate degree, preferably in psychology, counselling, or teaching. Candidates who are in the process of studying towards an undergraduate degree may be considered.
    • A minimum of 1 year experience in a school setting or in working with High School students will be advantageous.
    • Reliable form of transportation
    • The ability to work onsite in Mitchells Plain during school hours
    • Demonstrated passion for coaching, student development and the ability to grapple with the student/client paradigm, wearing dual hats as and when required.
    • Excellent command of the English language, verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, consistently amicable and responsive in dealing with all people, both externally and internally.
    • Preferred: SACE registration
    • Police Clearance (either official Police Clearance Certificate or Nevetec clearance certificate)

    Personal Skills & Attributes

    • Ability to simply convey concepts, principles and procedures via multiple channels such as email, phone and chat;
    • An understanding of technical and business process at a high level will be advantageous;
    • Minimum technical proficiency in working on different systems (training will be provided);
    • Questioning, taking ownership of and simplifying tasks to improve process efficiencies and achieve business outcomes.
    • An interest in remediation strategies (training will be provided) and working with students to overcome perceived or real barriers.
    • Proficiency in working with data.

    Campus Learning Coach | Gauteng

    Description

    The Learning Coach role is the frontline custodian of the learning experience for our Boutique Campus and is responsible for providing personalised support solutions to students and their parents as they work through the Pearson International curriculum. They will oversee the pastoral care, engagement and retention of students on Campus. The Campus Learning Coach will work alongside the Campus Manager and Learning Facilitator to create a safe, energetic, culturally-rich and innovative space to learn.

    Supervision on Campus

    • Supervise students and manage the classroom daily to ensure that students are constructively engaging in their learning experience, including maintaining a reasonable standard of class discipline at all times.
    • Practice sufficient duty of care, taking individual responsibility for campus management irrespective of the teaching lessons underway.

    Student Coaching & Support

    • Offer high-quality and consistent Learning Coach support to students in accordance with the strategies defined by the Student Success team.
    • Work closely with the Head of Student Success and Faculty to ensure delivery of a holistic, high-quality learning experience.
    • Take ownership of the role as the primary point of contact for students and their parents during the learning experience.
    • Be deeply committed to the responsibility for duty of care related to the role, and strictly uphold and abide by all policies and procedures.
    • Be committed to providing excellent support to both students and their parents at all times.
    • Provide prompt, effective support and personalised communication to student and parent queries via email, phone, and on the Online Campus.
    • Utilise an in-depth understanding of the technical functions of the Online Campus to guide a student in navigating their learning path and, where necessary, have basic knowledge on how to troubleshoot technical problems.
    • Provide an assessment of critical situations and determine when escalation is required to internal teams via pre-defined channels and follow up to ensure resolution.
    • Monitor and update data reports and student tracking sheets.
    • Host group sessions with students (including Home Room sessions and Learning Compass Sessions).
    • Develop and update individual student growth plans on a weekly basis.
    • Proactively alert the Counsellor to potential psychological issues/barriers (referrals process).

    Qualification Delivery

    • Employ creative thinking and problem solving techniques to provide qualification administrative support. Which includes, but is not limited to: extension, suspension, deferral, and cancellation request as well as queries related to fees, student records, examinations, recognition.
    • Collaborate regularly with team members of the Faculty and Product divisions to ensure the optimal delivery of the learning experience for students and their parents.
    • Self-manage workload through the use of data and metrics to drive efficiency in order to meet defined KPIs and participate in regular qualitative coaching and development feedback.
    • Remain up-to-date on departmental processes and resolution procedures through ongoing training and development

    Retention

    • A key success metric for the Student Success team is the successful retention of students. This is achieved through the delivery of an exceptional learning experience underpinned by quality mentoring. Where students are encountering challenges in this regard the Student Success Mentor is required to work with students, and their parents, to create personalised remediation and support plans in collaboration with the relevant Faculty team members.

    Regular cadences:

    • Form part of all cadences determined for the Campus, including DSUs, weekly meetings and other rhythms that may be established.
    • Provide timeous responses to Valenture Institute communications with team members.

    Requirements

    • Ideally, the candidate would have an interesting mix of experience in education, counselling or psychology
    • Demonstrated experience in teaching or counselling
    • Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree with an education or psychology qualification is preferable
    • 1+ years in a student facing, tutoring or counselling role
    • Police clearance
    • Reliable transport
    • Ability to work onsite at the Boutique Campus
