    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • Vacant senior academic position in Chemistry, with teaching duties in the sub-group Physical Chemistry and research duties (including postgraduate supervision) in the RFA for Chemical Resource Beneficiation, Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Teaching and Learning: undergraduate and honours physical chemistry modules.
    • Research and innovation: lead research and supervise students at masters and doctoral levels in Atmospheric Chemistry.
    • Community engagement: social and academic communities.
    • Management and other tasks at subject group, focus area and faculty levels, which include co-managing the Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Advanced knowledge of atmospheric chemistry research – knowledgeable of various atmospheric sampling and analytical techniques.
    • Be able to lecture introductory and advanced chemistry on a tertiary level with a specific inclination towards teaching physical chemistry.
    • Be able to learn various teaching philosophies and approaches to apply during teaching and learning activities.
    • Knowledge of aspects associated with the supervision of postgraduate studies in atmospheric chemistry.
    • Excellent computer skills, which include knowledge of relevant research and teaching software such as MS Office Suite (Teams, Outlook,
    • Word, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as advanced programming software such as MATLAB.
    • Written language ability with respect to spelling, grammar and punctuation to write scientific manuscripts.
    • Excellent communication skills within the scientific community through presentations and publications.
    • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU.
    • Illustrate potential to obtain a NRF rating within the near future.
    • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge within the atmospheric chemistry research field.

    • Higher education research and postgraduate supervision (Master’s and PhD).
    • A track record of research papers published in accredited peer-reviewed scientific journals.
    • National and international collaborations.
    • Non-academic chemistry experience.

    Job description

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • To lecture undergraduate and honours modules in Physics. Carry out research in one of the Departmental research focus areas: Astrophysics/Space Science/Astronomy

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

     TEACHING

    • Facilitate and administer the learning process for students in physics modules presented by the North West University at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
    • Review and design academic curricula.

     RESEARCH

    • Carry out research and supervise postgraduate students.
    • Preference will be given to Stellar Astrophysics/Exo-Planet Research.

     COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

    • Contribute to community engagement and be involved in the departmental administrative functions

    Minimum requirements

    • A doctoral degree (NQF level 10) in Materials/ Space Science & Astrophysics.
    • A minimum of three (3) year teaching experience

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • As the most senior representative of the Faculty of Humanities on site / campus, manage the operational delivery to achieve the unitary Faculty strategy and plan.
    • In addition, provide functional and academic leadership and quality assurance across campuses in respect of Teaching and Learning

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and Learning

    • Implement Faculty teaching and learning practices and processes on site and drive alignment across campuses.
    • Align academic programmes and modes of delivery on all campuses.
    • Implement, monitor and report on systems and processes for continuous quality assurance.
    • Joint accountability to update and review Faculty quality manual.
    • Manage quality assurance of academic programmes across sites of delivery.
    • Manage and complete external and internal programme evaluations and reviews.
    • Monitor and report on progress against and compliance with improvement plans post programme reviews.
    • Encourage and instil innovative Teaching and Learning methods.
    • Manage continuous curriculum and programme alignment in relation to Faculty plan, NWU academic standards and assessment frameworks.
