    Environmental and Sustainability Manager

    Job Summary

    • The purpose of the role is to support and implement the CRES’s environmental strategy in South Africa and across our African Regional Operations (ARO).  
    • Responsible for managing the Group’s direct footprint environmental performance and ensuring compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements. The incumbent will also be responsible to contribute towards the development of environmental initiatives and oversee their effective implementation in order to achieve the Group’s EAP targets and ambitions. 
    • It is expected that the incumbent will provide technical input and be accountable for the oversight in the planning, specifications, technology selection, analyses of alternative energy sources, provide input into the design and execution of engineering installations, and optimisation of utilities management for the Group (inclusive of ARO), in order to drive its sustainability programme.

    Job Description

    • Strategy Formulation
    • Support development of a strategy for infrastructure and asset management that is integrated, multidisciplined and enables the long-term sustainability of the company’s assets and infrastructure.
    • Implement effectively and efficiently functional and organisational goals applicable to area of responsibility and ensure that appropriate remedial actions are taken.
    • Implement controls as prescribed in the approved Group Environmental Policies and Standards.
    • Standards, Frameworks and Policy Development
    • Assist in the development/adoption of Policies, Standards and guidelines to enable Absa to achieve the Group’s Environmental Key Performance indicators in terms of energy conservation and efficiency, water reduction and savings, waste reduction, paper reduction, carbon reduction and to increase our renewable energy initiatives at different stages of new buildings development and/or refurbishments, asset upgrades and replacement cycles and energy requirements across its real estate
    • Maintain a comprehensive library of legislation and legal registers regarding environmental requirements and ensure that CRES’s legal obligations are met in line with the relevant legislation in South Africa and ARO.
    • Establish, implement, and proactively lead the review of the processes and procedures, and initiatives to continually improve CRES’s environmental performance and ensure that it complies to all the relevant Group policies, statutory and regulatory requirements.
    • Assist in the development/adoption of a robust ESG data management system/tool for Absa to capture and monitor consumption and cost data, and perform analyses of such information
    • CRES Sustainability Management Solution
    • Implement and manage CRES's sustainability management solution (SMS) in line with company standards.
    • Analyse data for trends at least monthly and track performance afainst EAP targets (Recalculate and correct where required.)
    • Design and Analysis
    • Develop and drive interventions that inculcate energy efficiency, water reduction / savings, waste reduction, paper reduction, carbon reduction and increase our renewable energy initiatives into ABSA real estate and operations (both for Corporate and Retail)
    • Conduct audits and compile audit reports for all our CRES environmental KPI’s (Energy reduction, water reduction and savings, waste reduction, paper reduction, carbon reduction and renewable energy initiatives).
    • Work closely with our energy management partners to develop new energy conservation and infrastructure improvement measures
    • Provide input into real estate development plan in line with field of expertise.
    • Manage monitoring, verification, reporting, auditing and procurement activities and the development/adoption and application of appropriate technologies for all CRES environmental KPI’s
    • Compliance
    • Draft and implement relevant statutory/legislative regulations, SOP's, operational standards, policies and practices to Absa principles.
    • Coordinate external and/or Group environmental-related audits.
    • Implement and conduct regular environmental inspections and conformance reviews, including the completion of documentation on risks and compliance and mitigating or corrective actions taken or to be taken.
    • Draft Environmental submissions for committees as required for review by the Head of risk.
    • Prepare quarterly dashboard reporting in line with Group, CRES and Functional Balanced Scorecard reporting cycle, including variance commentary
    • Lead and assist in regular root cause analysis to identify areas for improvement in CRES’s Environmental KPI performance and implement continuous improvement initiatives
    • Monitor and report on CRES’s environmental key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure internal objectives and targets are met
    • Manage and monitor accuracy and completeness of data on the environmental management solution
    • Conduct monthly, quarterly and annual conformance testing against the CRES Environmental Standard, Group Sustainability Policy and draft reports.
    •  Ensure all audit findings and reports are remediated and reported according to the Absa Internal Audit ICP process and templates (Internal closure procedure)
    • Stakeholder Management
    • Build, support and maintain healthy diverse internal (peers, unions, team) as well as external (service providers etc.) relationships to ensure achievement of organisational goals. Provide relevant and specialised technical support in area of expertise to relevant stakeholders to ensure achievement of objectives.
    • Consult, coordinate and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders with regards to impact of project activities.
    • Stakeholder relationship management:
    • Develop strong relationships with all CRES’s stakeholders (these include the Absa Group Strategy and Sustainability Office, CRES Exco, Absa Business Heads, Absa Engineering Team, Government, Regulators etc.).
    • Establish and maintain relationships with authorities to ensure company objectives in terms of legal compliance are achieved.
    • Provide training and education to employees on environmental matters.
    • Liaise with regulatory agencies, contractors, and other stakeholders on environmental issues.
    • Serve as the main contact point for ARO.
    • Perform the overall coordination role between ARO and South Africa to ensure alignment and compliance.

    • Engage with relevant stakeholders in the maintenance and operations department to ensure ease of maintenance and operability of assets to be installed during the design phase.

    Qualification

    • A recognised four-year bachelor's degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Engineering or related.

    Required experience

    • Excellent Mathematical and Data Modelling ability.
    • Professional certification in Environmental Management is highly regarded.
    • Ability to calculate Scope 1, 2 & 3 GHG Emissions.
    • Knowledge of IFRS S1 and S2 standards, the TCFD, CDP, GHG Protocol, GRI Standards, the SBTi, relevant ISO standards and JSE Sustainability and Climate Change Disclosure Guidance.
    • Understanding of Carbon Markets, Carbon Pricing, Carbon Tax and Carbon Offsets.
    • Experience in TCFD related Scenario Modelling and the Development and Implementation of Net Zero Transition Pathways.
    • 8 - 10 years’ post qualification experience in Environmental Management.
    • 3+ years ISO / Management Systems auditing experience.
