    Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer (One Position) - Department of Animal Science - Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Teaching and developing undergraduate as well as postgraduate modules in the areas of Animal Science and Production Systems focusing on large livestock (dairy and beef cattle);
    • Supervising postgraduate students at Masters and Doctoral levels;
    • Contributing to the departmental research theme on Ruminant Nutrition (Dairy production, Intensive and extensive beef production) Feeding Management and Sustainable Production Systems;
    • Fundraising for research in abovementioned fields;
    • Rendering service to the industry through short courses and recognised expertise in dairy nutritional and management.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Lecturer:

    • MSc(Agric) in Animal Science specializing in Ruminant Nutrition with emphasis on Dairy and Beef Production as well as registered for a PhD or intent to register during the first year of employment;
    • Professional registration with SACNASP;
    • At least three years applicable practical, teaching and/ or research experience;
    • Research output skills and/or a proven record of research publications in accredited journals as appropriate for the relevant level of appointment, specifically in the field of large stock animal nutrition and management.

    Senior Lecturer (same as for Lecturer, PLUS):

    • A PhD in Animal Science specializing in Ruminant Nutrition with expertise in dairy and beef nutrition;
    • Professional registration with SACNASP;
    • Lecturing experience in the specific disciplines at undergraduate and post graduate levels;
    • At least five years applicable practical, teaching and/ or research experience;
    • Research output skills and/or a proven record of research publications in accredited journals as appropriate for the relevant level of appointment, specifically in the field of large stock nutrition and management;
    • Procure and manage research funds.
    • Knowledge of the South African Feed Industry and large livestock production systems.

    Associate Professor (same as for Senior Lecturer and Lecturer, PLUS):

    • At least ten years applicable practical, teaching and/ or research experience;
    • Research output skills and/or a proven record of research publications in accredited journals as appropriate for the relevant level of appointment, specifically in the field of large stock nutrition and management;
    • Proven academic and/ or industry related management skills at senior level;
    • Experience in teaching and a track record of accomplished research;
    • Experience in presenting short courses;
    • Experience of procuring and managing research grants:
    • Knowledge of the South African Feed Industry and large livestock production systems.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Proficient in English with the ability to function effectively in a multi-lingual environment;
    • Good interpersonal and organizational skills;
    • Conflict management skills;
    • Member of Animal Science and or discipline related societies.

    Lecturer / Senior Lecturer - Department of Chemistry - Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Lecturing modules in general chemistry at our Mamelodi or Hatfield Campuses;
    • Lecturing modules in Physical chemistry;
    • Revising, updating, or developing new course material and practicals for modules in general chemistry;
    • Revising, updating, or developing new course material and practicals for modules in Physical Chemistry modules at the undergraduate and postgraduate level;
    • Pursuing and developing own long-term research program;
    • Recruiting and training postgraduate students;
    • Applying for national and international funding;
    • Publishing in DHET-accredited peer-reviewed journals;
    • Community engagement;
    • Administrative duties commensurate with the position and as set by the HoD.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Lecturer:

    • A PhD in Chemistry;
    • A record of publication of peer-reviewed articles in suitable journals.

    Senior Lecturer:

    • A PhD in Chemistry with a focus on Physical chemistry;
    • A record of publication of peer-reviewed articles in suitable journals;
    • Evidence of successful Master’s supervision;
    • At least 2 years’ tertiary teaching experience.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Fluent in written and spoken English;
    • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team.

    • Publishing in DHET accredited peer-reviewed journals;
    • Community engagement;
    • Administrative duties commensurate with the position and as set by the HoD.

    Lecturer - Department of Zoology and Entomology - Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • The incumbent will have a typical academic mandate of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervising masters and doctoral students, and producing research outputs through scientific papers published in international high-impact journals, and conference presentations. The incumbent will be expected to raise research funds and build a strong internationally acclaimed research programme.

    In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

    • Curriculum development, upgrading and updating course material;
    • Participating in professional scientific societies;
    • Participating in community engagement activities;
    • Active involvement in Departmental, Faculty and/or University administrative tasks.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A PhD degree in Zoology or a related field with specialisation in physiology;
    • Academic and teaching experience, as well as at least two years' practical work experience;
    • An indication of an emerging research career with evidence of publications in academic journals in the relevant field;
    • Experience in supervising/co-supervising MSc students.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Innovative thinking and new ideas on how to expand their research capacity in Africa and beyond;
    • Research publications and output, as well as recognition in the field, will be considered;
    • Appropriate language and communication skills.
