    Starke Ayres: General Worker

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Receive seed-lots for treatment and confirm type of treatment is correct.
    • Check / verify quantities, kins, varieties, seed size and lot numbers of seed received for treatment against the information supplied on the transfer.
    • Accurately weigh / check weigh containers according to prescribed procedures after application.
    • Close and label containers / bags of processed / treated seed according to prescribed procedures.
    • Stack / pack containers / bags with processed / treated seed according to prescribed procedures.
    • Assist with sealing (when applicable) of processed / treated seed according to prescribed procedures.
    • Ensure that all procedures as per appropriate checklists are accurately followed.
    • Clean all equipment thoroughly before and after each application, ensuring no traces or residue of previous treatments remain.
    • Present documentation (job card) to Supervisor for final reconciliation, approval, and sign off.
    • Operate the cleaning, treatment equipment after appropriate settings have been finalised by Supervisor.
    • Clean the relevant equipment before and after use.
    • Maintain high levels of hygiene surrounding the work area.
    • Presenting of job card to supervisor for approval and sign-off, before forwarded to next step in the process.
    • Ensure that seed is treated according to prescribed protocols and standards.
    • Assist with quality control of packaging material i.e., labels, bags, cartons, packets, etc. in conjunction with the Supervisor.
    • Ensure that quality control procedures, and instructions, are adhered to.
    • Daily Checklist to be completed on equipment in an accurate and thorough manner.

    Starke Ayres: Product Manager (Tomatoes & Brinjals)

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Evaluates Starke Ayres’ seed product range, on an on-going basis and identifies actual and potential weaknesses. Recommends new cultivar introductions to and deletions from the product range.
    • Liaises with Research Services / Suppliers in the identification of new, improved cultivars for testing and evaluation.
    • Foster good relationships with plant breeders and suppliers and advise on customer / industry requirements and trends to assist with assessing the viability of products in local and International Breeding programmes.
    • Monitor National Unit Budgets and stock planning for the portfolio
    • Manage and co-ordinate the receipt of trial seed and allocation thereof for trials in the various regions.
    • Plan and oversee the planting and evaluation of screening and phase 2 trials at strategic regions and customers (as identified in conjuction with the sales teams) and present the final results and recommendations at Range planning meetings.
    • Conducts co-operative cultivar demonstrations and evaluates new potential cultivars.
    • Motivate and introduce semi-commercial trials to sales teams with the necessary supporting documents and trial results
    • Supply sales teams with a comprehensive product marketing strategy for his current product portfolio, as well as for the introduction of new products, and is responsible for the implementation of such a strategy.
    • Launch new commercial products to the sales team and supplies the necessary product launch documents and strategies.
    • Develops and implements a comprehensive technical service programme (e.g. growing guidelines) for the Company’s sales and customer service personnel as well as its customers.
    • Supervises and controls the production and distribution of all product and technical literature.
    • Provides input with regard to the determination of the market potential of the Company’s seed products and the establishment of the sales budget.
    • Monitors unit budgets and advises the Operations Department when changes need to be made with regards purchases and allocations.
    • Compiles a customer list per crop and identify potential new customers per crop.
    • Annually submits a financial budget based on projected technical / marketing expenses and capital expenditure.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Qualifications:

    • Grade 12 (essential)
    • B Agric (essential)
    • BSc Agric (ideal)

    Experience:

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Customer Service:

    Maintenance and Operations:

    • Oversee the maintenance of all sales areas of the nursery, ensuring they are clean and tidy at all times.
    • Maintenance of property buildings and all associated nursery sales areas and verge.
    • Inventory control and operational management and service of small machinery and small equipment and tools.
    • Monitor stock levels daily and report shortages/requirements to the Line Manager.
    • Provide workers with assistance in performing duties as necessary to meet deadlines.
    • Ensure that all company procedures are executed correctly by sales staff.

    Supervision and Coordination:

    • Delegate tasks to the Assistant Nursery Supervisor or Sales Assistants as per management instructions.
    • Monitor sales activities to ensure that customers receive satisfactory service and quality goods.
    • Identify difficult and complicated sales scenarios and intervene swiftly.
    • Coordinate with buyers and suppliers for seasonal training every Friday (60 minutes) for all branch staff on chemicals, fertilizers, tools, plants, and related items on sale.

    • Organisation of monthly staff attendance register in conjunction with line managers.
    • Procurement of quotations for CAPEX and implementation thereof.

    Requirements

    REQUIREMENTS

    Education:

    • National Senior Certificate (NQF level 4) (essential)

    Experience:

    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in maintenance or operational roles
    • Experience in a nursery or garden centre environment (advantageous)
    • Horticulture knowledge is advantageous
