    Lab Operator - North West

    Role Context

    • Conduct laboratory-scale flow battery tests following standard operating procedures
    • Set up, operate, and maintain test rigs and laboratory instrumentation
    • Monitor the performance of field-deployed batteries and assist with on-site diagnostics
    • Collect, label, and prepare liquid and solid samples for chemical and physical analysis
    • Perform basic and intermediate analytical tests (e.g., titrations, spectroscopic analysis) on samples
    • Record test conditions, results, and anomalies with high attention to detail
    • Assist with data entry, analysis, and generation of test reports
    • Support laboratory housekeeping, safety protocols, and inventory management

    Mine Planning Engineer

    Role Context

    Compliance, Risk and Safety

    • Provide guidance to the responsible opencast and underground area’s Short-Term Plan (STP), Medium-Term Plan (MTP) and the approved geotechnical parameters to ensure adherence to pit boundaries/limits.
    • Monitor compliance of plans to the safety, geotechnical and legal requirements of the planning process to mitigate safety risks.

    Continuous Improvement  

    • Identify system and process improvements within the mine planning horizons and implement the approved initiatives to consistently improve the quality of the plans.
    • Enhance the use of planning software systems by internal Tharisa Minerals (TM) stakeholders to support the delivery of plans in a timely and a cost-effective manner.
    • Introduce initiatives to consistently improve the quality of the reconciliation processes and the entire planning cycle (MTP, STP and WOP) including grade and volumes.

    Data Analytics and Reporting

    • Draft and deliver mine planning reports and minutes to provide a view of all mine-planning activities, meetings and pit visits.
    • Draft and submit Spatial and Volumetric Reconciliation Reports for actual performance against all planning targets (WOP, STP, MTP) for all mining functions including drilling and blasting, load and hauling, RC drilling, strategic and short-term accesses, waste destinations etc., ensuring compliance exceeds 85%.

    Quality Assurance and Quality Control

    • Conduct and oversee detailed underground and opencast mine layout designs to align the LTP and MTP strategy into the execution of the WOP and STP.
    • Conduct frequent mine visits to ensure the plan is relevant, practical and considers the physical mining conditions and challenges.
    • Liaise with the mine operations team to ensure the planning activities are aligned with the status in the mine.
    • Manage destination scheduling using mining scheduling software, to simultaneously schedule mining and dumping, providing an up-to-date view of the source and destination of every step in the process.
    • Oversee and produce elements of the WOP and STP.

    Reconciliation, Construction and Mine Planning Projects

    • Lead, own and develop the reconciliation process, mine planning construction activities and specific mine planning projects and team, accounting for equipment availability, workforce scheduling and production targets to deliver quality mine project plans.
    • Provide technical assistance to translate and implement the MTP mining designs and planning into the 3-month rolling operational practical plans with specific focus on optimising destination scheduling, mine accesses, dewatering and other construction activities.
    • Drive the alignment between and continuity of the MTP, STP and the WOP, ensuring practical planning execution by the pit operational team with compliance exceeding 85%.
    • Test the effectiveness of the plans to identify gaps and improve the quality of the overall mine planning and implementation.
    • Enhance the use of planning software systems to support accurate, cost effective and efficient tools able to manage TM’s business interests.
    • Manage the delivery of pit balanced ore-mix-flow and run-of-mine stockpiles build-up to meet and exceed both volume and grades plant feed expectations/budget.

    Resource Management

    • Provide input into required changes in resources (financial or non-financial) to enable the achievement of team and/or own objectives.
    • Determine resource needs of the team and/or own area of work to achieve business outcomes.
    • Request and allocate required assets and/or resources for the fulfilment of work objectives to guarantee quality outputs.
    • Monitor the use of assets and resources within the team and own area of responsibility, to ensure assets and resources are consistently and appropriately utilised and managed.
    • Provide staff with day-to-day direction and tasks aligned with Departmental procedures, to enable the usage of less resources more efficiently.

    Stakeholder Relations

    • Communicate with all relevant Departments on issues of the area of speciality. Liaise across the relevant Departments by engaging with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure all stakeholders remain abreast of Departmental objectives, any potential derailers are appropriately managed and duplication of work is avoided.
    • Communicate with internal and/or external stakeholders, where required, to achieve work objectives and to maintain relationships.

    Requirements

    Qualifications:

    • Grade 12 (NQF4) National Senior Certificate
    • BSc/BEng Degree (NQF7) in Mining Engineering 

    Certifications: (Advantageous)

    • Rock Breakers Certificate/Blasting Certificate/Mine Overseer Certificate of Competency is advantageous

    Job specific experience:

    • A minimum of between ten to twelve (10-12) years of experience in the mining industry, of which a minimum of eight (8) years is in the mine planning/technical environment and part is on an opencast and on an underground mine.
    • Experience as a Pit Superintendent or similar role is advantageous
    • Experience supervising teams in a technical and/or operational capacity is essential
    • Specialist software knowledge and application skills (both mine design and scheduling) with packages specialising in the short-term space is considered essential
    • Valid driving licence

    Supply Chain Administrator

    Pre-Contract & Tender Administration (Primary Focus)

    • Coordinate and administer end-to-end tender processes.
    • Compile, review, and issue tender documentation (ITT) in line with company standards and governance requirements.
    • Maintain the tender register, ensuring full auditability and version control.
    • Coordinate tender briefings, site visits, and clarification meetings with stakeholders and suppliers.

    Front End Loader Operator

    Health and Safety

    • Conduct risk and safety inspections, identifying and reporting any risks within the allocated area of operations and completing the requisite checklist recording the associated risks
    • Conduct a prestart safety checklist by inspecting the FEL machine, identifying any risks and concerns and escalating them to the control room and supervisor ensuring all safety requirements are met before the respective FEL is put into operation for the day
    • Conduct continuous risk assessments throughout the day by proactively identifying and reporting identified risks within the areas of operation and collaborating with the various departments to support and maintain a safe working environment
    • Maintain and manage one’s own health and safety across the area of operations by adhering to all health and safety protocols and procedures in order to minimise any incidents within the working environment
    • Promote a culture of Zero harm and emphasize compliance to TM policies, values and ethics, so as to cultivate a workplace culture focused on safety and adherence to company policies, values, and ethical standards

    Equipment Operations

    • Conduct a prestart safety checklist by inspecting the allocated FEL machine, identifying any risks and concerns, and escalating them to the control room and supervisor ensuring all safety requirements are met before the respective FEL is put into operation for the day
    • Manage load and weight distribution across the various FEL being operated within this role by understanding weight distribution requirements and constraints for the respective FEL to maintain stability and minimise spillage during transport
    • Contribute toward the construction of the roads in and around the mine as required by business by transporting and laying the respective materials required to build and maintain the roads
    • Manoeuvre the FEL into, around and across various sites, including confined and elevated spaces by analysing the various inclines and environmental factors in order to position the FEL for optimal loading, minimising unnecessary risk and managing the optimal load for transportation
    • Work according to the daily and weekly plan by engaging with the supervisor to understand the intended targets and notifying them of any potential delays (due to breakdowns or any other causes) to enable continuous monitoring of target achievements
    • Conduct daily housekeeping on the FEL that this role has worked with by cleaning the cabins, conducting an end of shift inspection on the FEL and ensuring any required maintenance or cleaning is scheduled accordingly to keep the FEL in peak operational condition
    • Investigate any accident or incident damage with the artisan and the safety officer by recounting the event and identifying the cause of the incident.
    • Monitor all gauges and indicators during the operation of the Track Dozer, focusing on any potential warnings that the Track Dozer produces and ensure that the Track Dozer can be operated safely and in line with the required parameters of the machine

    Daily Planning

    • Work in line with the established timelines and pressures by driving adherence to the daily and weekly operational plans as well as prioritising adhoc daily requests for movements of loads outside of the allocated ‘block/s’
    • Work according to the daily and weekly plan by engaging with the supervisor to understand the intended targets and notifying them of any potential delays (due to breakdowns or any other causes) to enable continuous monitoring of target achievements

    L&D Technical Facilitator

    Role Context

    Training Facilitation

    • Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, emerging technologies and advancements in mining technology and safety practices, to enhance learning and development strategies and training programs.
    • Coordinate, deliver and monitor training and assessment requirements, by ensuring adherence to assessment principles, to maintain fairness, transparency, and validity in all training programs, displaying high standards of quality and effectiveness.
    • Evaluate learning programs and assessments, by monitoring learners participating in training programs, to make fair and transparent judgments regarding participant performance.
    • Make use of relevant systems and demonstrate problem-solving abilities to address any system-related issues.
    • Review, coordinate and implement the training schedule to ensure that all upcoming events, workshops, classes, assessments and other learning activities adhere to, and are aligned to, the training scheduled.
    • Adhere to training schedules and timelines to ensure timely delivery of training programs.

    • Collect feedback from participants and line management, by assessing the effectiveness of training programs, to identify shortcoming and recommend improvements.
    • Participate in L&D audits by preparing all relevant information and documentation needed and cooperating during on-site inspections, to ensure that the training programs and material used remain compliance with legislation and regulatory requirements.
    • Adress and report all non-compliance with TM policies, legislation and regulatory requirements to the L&D Specialist to ensure the needed rectifications are implemented.
    • Drive and monitor safety when conducting walkabouts in the plant/mine, so as to ensure full compliance with the TM policy and regulatory requirements, using no compliance as upskill opportunities.
    • Manage record-keeping and compliance with International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standards, to uphold quality and regulatory requirements.
    • Monitor the implementation and maintenance of internal quality management systems to ensure continuous improvement and adherence to regulatory requirements and standards.

    Resource Management

    • Determine resource needs within own area of responsibility to achieve individual role outcomes.
    • Request required assets and resources for the fulfilment of work duties to attain quality work outputs.
    • Use assets and resources optimally within own area of responsibility.
    • Manage, monitor and coordinate all training logistics so as to ensure the availability of all the required resources (i.e., venue, tables, chairs, stationary, etc.).
    • Review and evaluate the learning material and supporting documents, by sending outdated material back to external providers and requesting the latest stock, to ensure that all learning material is valid and aligned to the latest requirements.

    Requirements

    Qualifications:

    • Certificate in OD ETDP Level 4 or equivalent as an occupationally directed education, training and development practitioner (ODETDP).
    • Higher Certificate in OD ETDP Level 5.
    • Assessor and Moderator Qualifications.

    Certifications: 

    • Surface Mobile Machineries i.e. Motor Grader, Track Dozer, Rigid Dump Truck, Excavator, Face Shovel, Front End Loader, Drill Rig, etc.
    • Skills programme Trackless Mobile Machine Operations (TMM) - Underground Hardrock advantageous
    • Skills programme Skills Programme Occupational Health and Safety activities for: Part Time/Workplace Representatives and Shop Stewards in the Mining and Minerals (OHS) advantageous

    Job specific experience:

    • Minimum of 2-3 years Learning and Development, Operation experience, of which at least one (1) year should focus on conducting assessments and moderations within the Mining Industry.
    • Proficient in Microsoft suite (i.e., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
