    Associate Professor/Professor - Department of Private Law - Faculty of Law

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbents will be responsible for:

    • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in programmes on offer in the Department;
    • Developing a research programme in an appropriate area of expertise or expanding existing research programmes;
    • Publishing research articles in the foremost national/international accredited journals;
    • Participate in national and international conferences within the research focus areas;
    • Supervising postgraduate master’s and doctoral students within the research focus areas; 
    • Performing assigned departmental duties (e.g. of an administrative nature);
    • Community engagement in relation to the research focus areas;
    • Representing the Department on Faculty and other committees as assigned.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    For Associate Professor:

    Candidates for the post of Associate Professor should be in possession of a completed doctorate with specialisation in one or more of the following focus areas:

    • Law of Contract;
    • Private International Law;
    • Unjustified Enrichment;
    • Law of Succession;
    • Law of Estoppel;
    • Law of Delict;
    • Intellectual Property Law;
    • Law and Technology;
    • Family Law.
    • The academic record of the candidate must be excellent and must reflect the candidate's status as an established teacher and researcher of good standing within one or more of the research focus areas.
    • Preferably eight years' teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level in one or more of the research focus areas listed above.
    • Evidence of curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate level will be a strong recommendation.
    • Evidence of conference papers delivered internationally.
    • At least sixteen accredited quality publications within the research focus areas, of which at least six must have been published in the last three years.
    • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision within the research focus areas.
    • Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching.
    • Extensive relevant academic administration experience.
    • An appropriate NRF rating or identified by peers as an independent established researcher, at least at a national level.

    For Professor:

    Candidates for the post of Professor should be in possession of a completed doctorate with specialisation in one or more of the following focus areas:

    • Law of Contract;
    • Private International Law;
    • Unjustified Enrichment;
    • Law of Succession;
    • Law of Estoppel;
    • Law of Delict;
    • Intellectual Property Law;
    • Law and Technology;
    • Family Law.
    • The academic record of the candidate must be excellent and must reflect the candidate's international standing as leading teacher and renowned researcher within one or more of the research focus areas.
    • Preferably ten years' teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level in one or more of the research focus areas listed above.
    • Evidence of curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
    • At least thirty accredited quality publications within the research focus areas, of which at least six must have been published in the last three years.
    • Evidence of papers delivered at international subject conferences in one or more of the research focus areas.
    • Evidence of successful doctoral and masters' supervision within the research focus areas.
    • Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching.
    • Extensive relevant academic administration experience.
    • An appropriate NRF rating or identified by peers as an independent established researcher at international level.

    • Ability to facilitate e-learning and e-communication;
    • Ability to plan and conduct assessment events;
    • Ability to work in teams and to lead teams;
    • Ability to take initiative and to explore academic collaborative work opportunities;
    • Ability to work under pressure.

    • Admission and experience as a legal practitioner will be an advantage.
