    Chief Safety Officer - Kathu

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB

    Responsible for the investigation and identification of all areas that may influence the safety and health of all employees within a designated area. Recommends procedure to minimise the injury frequency rate. Tasks involve planning, scheduling, controlling, inspecting, reporting and training. Must have knowledge of mines and works regulations and other relevant regulations. Assist with safety legal compliance and implementation of operational improvement measures and increased in the field.

    KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

    Risk Management and Assessment

    • Assist with risk assessments and facilitate line managers and HOD's in implementing corrective and preventive actions where necessary;
    • Assist with accident investigations and dangerous occurrences and introduce corrective and preventive actions to prevent future occurrences. Track effective close out of actions;
    • Monitor risks and assist affected business operations to minimize negative impact;
    • Review Risk COP's and SOP's to ensure guidelines are met and forward to specialist for final approval;
    • Develop a schedule for the Safety Officers for routine risk assessments and reviews;
    • Assist with scheduling of monthly Risk meetings to collate risk and process related issues and escalate to the relevant stakeholder where required;
    • Ensure that the baseline risk assessments are reviewed and updated as required;
    • Ensure a database is kept of all Risk assessment studies / results / outcomes;
    • Communicate the findings of risk assessments to all relevant stakeholders; and
    • Communicate all significant risks, control measures implemented, and progress made towards the achievement of objectives.
    • Health and Safety Management
    • Ensure adherence to Health and Safety standards in work environment through legal inspections;
    • Determine critical health and safety areas and conduct scheduling of legal inspections;
    • Oversees implementation of preventative and corrective measures and actions to minimize health and safety risks;
    • Compile Safety and Health statistics and report to Mine Management and other stakeholders;
    • Assist with Health and Safety Committee and ensure implementation of corrective and preventive actions and improvements in integrated Risk Management System;
    • Interpret safety and health data, identify hotspots / trends, conduct root cause analysis and facilitate appropriate action to reduce health and safety risks;
    • Coordinate investigation presentations for line managers to present on LTI and medical treatment (reportable incidents) to Senior General Manager within 5 (five) working days of incidents;
    • Conduct over inspections and PTO’s on Safety Officer and line supervision inspections;
    • Schedule and conduct section SHE System audits and assist with implementation of improvement actions; and
    • Assist with implementation of safety improvement projects.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

    • Matric (Grade 12)
    • Diploma /NQF Level 6 related to Safety
    • A relevant Mine Health and Safety Qualification (e.g. COMSOC, SAMTRAC)
    • Engineering trade, diploma or degree in Safety Management will be advantageous.
    • A Blasting Ticket will be advantageous.

    MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

    • Up to 12 years working experience.
    • 3 Years Opencast mining and plant operational experience.
    • 3 – 5 years Chief Safety Officer experience
    • 3 years working experience within the mining and ore processing environment.
    • Good working knowledge of all the relevant Acts, regulations and standards.
    • Computer Literacy.
    • Demonstrable success as a Safety Practitioner.
    • Demonstrable success as instructor/trainer.
    • Good communication and reporting skills. Both verbal and written.
