Driving Instructor at Shoprite Group of Companies

About the role    

• To facilitate, coordinate and deliver driver training and development programmes that promote safe, compliant, efficient and professional driving practices.
• The Driving Instructor is responsible for classroom and practical driver training, coaching and mentoring of drivers, conducting assessments, monitoring performance, and supporting driver development initiatives to improve operational effectiveness and road safety standards.

What you'll do

Training Planning and Coordination

• Prepare and maintain annual, monthly and weekly driver training schedules.
• Coordinate classroom and practical driver training programmes.
• Ensure training interventions are aligned to operational and legislative requirements.
• Maintain training records, attendance registers and training documentation.

Driver Training and Development

• Conduct classroom-based and on-the-job driver training.
• Facilitate inductions and refresher training programmes for drivers.
• Deliver training on road safety, vehicle inspections, defensive driving, fuel efficiency, compliance requirements and company procedures.
• Provide remedial training where performance gaps have been identified.

Coaching and Mentoring

• Coach and mentor drivers to improve driving performance and professional conduct.
• Provide continuous support and guidance to learners and newly appointed drivers.
• Assist drivers in developing skills and competencies required to perform their roles effectively.

Assessment and Evaluation

• Conduct driver assessments, evaluations and competency checks.
• Monitor driver performance through practical observations and available performance management tools.
• Assess learner progress and provide recommendations for further development.
• Ensure assessments are conducted in accordance with SETA and company requirements.

Training Material Development

• Provide input into the development, review and improvement of training material.
• Assist in updating training content to ensure relevance, legislative compliance and operational effectiveness.
• Support the implementation of new driver training initiatives and programmes.

Reporting and Administration

• Provide regular feedback to management on trainee progress, training outcomes and driver performance.
• Compile training reports and maintain accurate training records.
• Identify trends, risks and development opportunities arising from driver assessments and training interventions.

Driver Development Programmes

• Assist with the recruitment, screening and selection processes for driver learnership programmes.
• Support the implementation and administration of driver learnership initiatives.
• Assist with the planning, coordination and execution of Driver of the Year competitions and related development programmes.

Operational Support

• Provide support to transport operations as required.
• Assist with special projects and other departmental responsibilities when requested by management.
• Promote a culture of safety, compliance and continuous improvement within the transport environment.

What you bring    

Qualifications

• Grade 12 (Matric) preferred.
• Relevant training, facilitation or assessor qualifications will be advantageous.
• Registration with the relevant SETA is essential.

Experience

• Minimum of 3 years' experience as a Code 14 Driver.
• Previous driver instruction and/or driver training experience will be advantageous.
• Experience in transport operations and driver development programmes preferred.
• Knowledge of DriveRisk, DriveCam or similar driver performance management systems will be advantageous.

Knowledge

• Road Traffic Act and transport regulations.
• Driver training methodologies and assessment techniques.
• Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
• Fleet and transport operational processes.
• Driver learnership programmes and SETA requirements.

Computer Literacy

• Basic to intermediate computer literacy.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook.
