    Lecturer in Industrial Engineering With Sustainable Mining (nGAP) (P003793)

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • The nGAP position in the School of Industrial Engineering (SIE) and Centre for Sustainable Mining (CSM) is part of the SSAUF initiative by the DHET to improve the academic staffing at South African universities.
    • It is a prestigious development programme to enable young employment equity candidates to follow a career as an academic. nGAP employees will participate in a developmental programme on a permanent full-time basis under the University's normal conditions of service and will work under the supervision of an appointed mentor.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching 

    • Years 1-3: Be responsible for at least one undergraduate/postgraduate diploma module.
    • Year 4 onwards: Be responsible for at least two undergraduate/postgraduate diploma modules.

    Final year supervision

    • Years 1-3: Limited to own development.
    • Year 4 onwards: Progressively more research in a research group associated with the School/Centre, including postgraduate study supervision, as per the annual task agreement.

    Research

    • Completion of own postgraduate study and research experience.
    • Professional body registration.
    • Participate in CSM Research Group.

    School Administration

    • As required / per task agreement.

    Minimum requirements

    • An MEng/MSc Industrial Engineering (with specialization in mining applications) or Mining Engineering (NQF Level 9). The master’s degree must be achieved with an average of 70% or above. Please attach proof of the results in your application.
    • An appropriate BEng/ BScEng degree that allows for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA, http://ecsa.co.za), in terms of the Washington accord.
    • A minimum of one (1) year of teaching or student assistant experience.
    • Applicants must be SA citizen and 40 years or younger of age.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

    • Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
    • A minimum of two (2) years’ evidence of independent research or industry experience.

    KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:                                     

    Must be proficient in the following:

    • Eligibility for or registration with a recognized professional body (ECSA). 
    • Demonstrated industry experience in mining or industrial engineering applications. 
    • Ability to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. 
    • Competence in research methodology and technical writing. 
    • Knowledge of appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance. 
    • Experience in curriculum development and module design aligned with accreditation standards.
    • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), email, and internet. 
    • Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g., whiteboard technology, eFundi, LMS systems) to enhance the learning and collaboration environment. 
    • A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and well-being.
    • Effective communication skills (oral and written). 
    • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation. 
    • Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
    • The ability to function well individually and as part of a team/subject group.
    • Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as ability to be self-driven.
    • The ability to solve problems independently.
    • Good planning and organising skills as well as good report writing skills.
    • Effective time-management skills. 
    • A high level of professional and ethical conduct. 
    • Willingness to contribute to outreach, partnerships, and knowledge transfer initiatives.
