    Lecturer /Senior Lecturer: Pharmacology and Toxicology - Department of Paraclinical Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The successful candidate will actively participate in: 

    • Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in 
    • Active participation in curriculum development/improvement;
    • Active participation in departmental research programmes;
    • Postgraduate training and supervision of master's and/or doctoral students;
    • Research and publication in national and international scientific journals;
    • Departmental and faculty administrative duties as delegated by the Head of Department;
    • Academic self-development as appropriate to the individual’s academic career;
    • Community engagement – participation and supporting student activities; and
    • Active participation in departmental service rendering activities, including service rendering to developing communities and continuing education programmes.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

    Lecturer: 

    • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification; 
    • Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with SAVC; 
    • Demonstrate the potential to become a competent lecturer at the undergraduate level;
    • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established researcher; and
    • Registered for MMedVet or MSc and committed to acquiring the degree within two years of appointment. 

    Senior Lecturer: 

    • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification; 
    • Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with the SAVC; 
    • MSc in pharmacology or toxicology, or a related field; and
    • Five or more ISI-accredited research-based full papers in accredited scientific journals as senior author and/or co- author; 

    OR

    • A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification; 
    • Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with the SAVC; 
    • MMedVet in pharmacology and toxicology;
    • Two or more ISI-accredited research-based full papers in accredited scientific journals  as senior author and/or co- author; and or
    • Registered for a PhD or committed to acquiring a PhD within a reasonable time; and
    • Teaching experience at undergraduate level.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES FOR BOTH LEVELS (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Proven knowledge and competency in pharmacology and toxicology;
    • Research interest appropriate to the position;
    • Candidates without an MSc or PhD: Commitment to obtain a further postgraduate qualification in a reasonable time;
    • Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; 
    • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills; and
    • Critical thinking ability.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • A PhD in a relevant area;
    • Experience in grantsmanship;
    • Involvement in research projects; and
    • Supervision and/or co-supervision of postgraduate students.
