Legal Counsel: Consumer Protection & Compliance at 2U

What We’re Looking For:

The focus of this position is to support the Privacy & Consumer Protection Function of the Legal team at 2U Cape Town and to provide legal counsel on and address a wide range of compliance matters internally, working closely with stakeholders in different business divisions. The role will further be expected to play a facilitating role in implementing controls and safeguards that may be necessary to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory obligations (focussing on Sales, Marketing and Communications divisions).

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:

• Providing legal guidance on a wide range of consumer protection issues including appropriate marketing content and representations, market research initiatives, promotional activities, consent management, advertising and social media rules & regulations, etc.
• Keeping abreast of new legal and regulatory developments relating to consumer protection and general regulatory compliance issues.
• Engaging with business stakeholders to determine internal policy needs and translating into practical solutions; facilitating drafting and management of all business policies.
• Facilitating staff training on compliance and consumer protection matters and supporting the resolution of internal and external stakeholder queries.
• Reviewing contracts or other documentation to ensure compliance with company policies and requirements.
• Assisting in the execution of POPIA Data Subject Requests.

Things That Should Be In Your Background:

• LLB.
• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
• 2+ years post-admission experience.
• Excellent professional language & writing skills.
• Experience in tech / innovation / marketing industries – advantageous.

Working Conditions

• 2U is a fast-paced, high-pressured environment and you will be expected to keep up with minimal support. Teamwork is critical to achieving success in this role. You will need to establish strong relationships with leaders across the team and within your own division. We don’t micromanage, so you have to diagnose problems and brainstorm solutions without any prompts. People issues are time consuming, however, they need ample attention so that the correct processes are followed to avoid legal action. Things change all the time and you will find yourself being pulled in many directions and it is up to you to either sink or swim.
