    Professor/ Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer

In partnership with the Western Cape Government, Department of Health, we are seeking an incumbent who will provide vision and leadership that will enhance our position as a leading Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
    Appointment is on the joint establishment of Stellenbosch University and the Western Cape Government, Department of Health, on the conditions of service of the University.
    Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty and the Chief Executive Officer Tygerberg Hospital respectively, the incumbent's duties will include:

    Duties    

    • Overall strategic leadership and operational management of the Division, giving expression to its vision of becoming a world-class centre for training, teaching and learning, clinical service, research and innovation in Ophthalmology;
    • Fostering an inclusive and collegial environment that encourages a high level of performance, communication and teamwork;
    • Operational management of human resources and finances of the Division;
    • Participating in clinical service delivery commitments of the Division, including commuted overtime at Tygerberg Hospital;
    • Overall academic responsibility for teaching and learning which includes guidance and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in Ophthalmology across the faculty's distributed training platform;
    • Overall responsibility for research and innovation which includes leading, mentoring and participating in the design, execution, supervision, publication and translation of research in priority areas;
    • Active participation in the internationalisation efforts of the University;
    • Contributing to the goals and functioning of the University and the health department through active involvement in the relevant management structures of the University and the Western Cape Provincial Government;
    • Expanding and strengthening collaboration with health services, communities and other stakeholders.

    Job Requirements        

    • A postgraduate qualification in Ophthalmology which may include an MMed degree or FC Ophth; 
    • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Specialist in independent practice in Ophthalmology;
    • Teaching and examining experience in Ophthalmology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
    • Proven record of ophthalmic surgical competence as evidenced by the submission of a personal surgical logbook of the past three years;  
    • A proven record of independent and innovative research and guidance of research;
    • Proven national and international recognition as a specialist ophthalmologist.

    Recommendation        

    • A doctoral degree for appointment at a Professorial level;
    • A Fellowship qualification in a sub-specialty area in Ophthalmology.
