    Senior Manager - Commercial Legal ICT COE ICT Center of Excellence

    Key Performance Areas: Core, essential responsibilities / outputs of the position (KPA's)

    Overall

    • Drive initiatives to build and strengthen the ICT CoE Legal function.
    • Prepare key departmental updates, reports and presentations for management review.
    • Drive Legal Department marketing actions to enhance awareness and collaboration with stakeholders for a seamless delivery of results.

    Contract Management

    • Design, implement and update new standard contracts and checklists.
    • Incorporate related company policies and applicable laws into contracts.
    • Draft and advise on company’s contracts relating to suppliers, clients and partners with high level of complexity.
    • Monitor the Contract Management System and ensure speedy resolution of issues with/ by internal stakeholders.
    • Ensure filing and archiving of contract documentation in CMS to minimize risk and adhere to regulations on document retention.
    • Structure, negotiate, and prepare all commercial transactions in order to reduce/eliminate commercial risk to the operations.

    Legal Risk Management

    • Raise other divisions and management awareness on potential legal issues.
    • Identify, develop and roll-out training and awareness sessions relevant to non-legal staff.

    Legal Advisory

    • Act in a supporting and advisory capacity to Management and employees as necessary,
    • Research and provide legal opinions, gathering and evaluating relevant facts, researching applicable laws and providing recommendations on the legal consequences of business initiatives, projects, decisions and highlighting attendant risks.

    Stakeholder Management

    • Multiply initiatives towards judiciary and administrative authorities to build ethical relationships with the company.
    • Support efforts towards influencing Governmental Policies affecting the Company’s businesses through active participation to GICAM.
    • Manage outside counsel and other advisors as may be required.

    Projects

    • Champion key projects of the company as assigned.
    • Handle legal stream of company’s projects.                                    

    Budget management

    • Prepare and submit the legal budget.
    • Ensure robust budget management to stay within/below approved budget.

    PPPs

    • Ensure adherence to and regular update of all procedures and processes pertaining to contract management Contribute to the design of the departmental strategy in alignment with the company’s strategy.

    Self - Management

    • Enable and model healthy employee relations and collaborative teamwork.
    • Act as an ambassador for the ICT CoE by actively demonstrating and “living” the Brand values and vital behaviours. 
    • Make the environment the best place to work by fostering professionalism, loyalty and commitment to the organization. 

    Team Management 

    • Set goals and objectives for direct reports, monitor progress and maintain motivation.
    • Manage performance of team.
    • Oversee weekly, monthly and ad hoc reporting.
    • Identify staff training and development needs and implement necessary actions.
    • Assist in the recruiting process of staff for appointment. 
    • Interact with External Counsel 
    • Interact with internal stakeholders to obtain information and documentation to support contract management,
    • Interact with members of GICAM,
    • Ensure management of the Legal and Cosec Team in the absence of the General Manager Legal

    Key relationships:

    • Direct reports: tbc
    • Key customers: ICT CoE team (All markets)
    • Key suppliers: External Counsel, consultants, contractors
    • Relations, etc.: All MTN OpCos - across the markets

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

    • Matric / Grade 12; plus 
    • 4-year tertiary qualification in Law (commercial/ business law or similar).
    • Master’s degree advantageous.

    Experience

    • 8 years of working experience in a legal function in medium – large organisation preferably a multinational corporation or in commercial legal practice. 
    • 3 years in managerial position.
    • Having worked in the ICT industry will be an added advantage.
    • Experience of work across diverse cultures and geographies.
