Job Purpose

• To carry out routine maintenance work on water reticulation installations and fixtures, reconstruct damaged fire hydrants, carry out minor leak repairs and repack glands on leaking valves.

Key Responsibility Areas

• Supervises assigned labour, allocates them the daily work and monitors their progress and conduct.
• Ensures that the official vehicle, plant, tools and other equipment are kept clean and in sound working order.
• Ensures that the staff are issued with and wear overalls and safety clothing as prescribed.
• Checks and ensures that the stock of materials in the vehicle is adequate for the work to be done and replenishes stock as required.
• Completes all documentation such as daily work reports and vehicle control sheets and ensures that the prescribed documentation is handed to the depot clerk daily.
• Carries out preventative maintenance and reconstruction work on existing valve installations involving clearing of vegetation and trimming of earthworks around control valve chambers.
• Supervises closely and direct staff to carry out exploratory excavations to locate buried valve covers, prove the position of buried pipes and electric power cables and/or locate the origin of underground leaks.
• Assists Artisan Plumber teams with excavations, backfilling and manhandling of pipe and fittings.
• Takes pressure readings and/or install pressure recording instrumentation at designated sites to assist management with the diagnosis of water service problems.
• Undertakes general driving duties.

Essential Requirements

• Grade 10 or equivalent.
• Valid motor vehicle driving license
• 2 Years relevant experience

Preferred Requirements

• Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent.
• 3 Years relevant experience.
