    PhD Research Intern - Cape Town, Pretoria or Durban

    Job Advert Summary    

    • Two PhD Research Traineeships are available. The PhD Research Trainee Programme in the HSRC provides the successful candidate with an opportunity to further develop their research expertise by working with subject experts and project specialists. The research trainee experience is intensive and seeks mature individuals who can work independently as well as part of a team. While appointees will be exposed to a wide variety ofn project-related research, they will be expected to complete their PhD thesis within three years. Reasonable time is set aside for this purpose.

    Minimum Requirements    

    • Applicants must be South African and in possession of a Master’s degree in the Social Sciences, Public Health, Demography, Epidemiology, or Biostatistics and be already registered for a PhD, at a recognised South African or an international equivalent institution.
    •  The candidate should have an interest in HIV and AIDS, gender studies, GBV, mental health and also biostatistics.
    • A sound grounding in research methods and previous experience in research and data analysis will be a strong recommendation
    • Proficiency in or working experience with some of the following data software packages: STATA, Epi Info, SPSS, Nvivo, AtlasTI or other relevant statistical packages
    • Ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines.

    Duties & Responsibilities    

    • In addition to being registered for a PhD degree at a recognised South African university and currently working on their degrees, or eligible for registration at a recognised South African university, research trainees are required to participate in all aspects of the research process as they work with other staff on different research projects.

    Among other duties, they will participate in the following activities under supervision:

    • Support the research and research-related work of the PHSB research division
    • Assist with the conceptualisation and execution of research projects
    • Assist with the formulation of research questions and writing proposals
    • Assist with the submission of research proposals for ethical review
    • Collection and analysis of data
    • Writing up of research results, research reports and manuscripts for publication
    • Presenting research findings at conferences and other forums
    • Participate in internal seminars
    • Management or supervision of research projects

    Minimum Requirements    

    • Resident in any of the 3 regions of Latin America, Asia or Africa.
    • Expertise in one of the following focus areas: Relational Wellbeing, Youth Wellbeing, Youth Studies.
    • A Masters degree in the Social Sciences (a doctoral degree would be advantageous).
    • Access to reliable, high-quality, and stable internet
    • Available to travel to attend a minimum of 3 research project conferences.
    • At least 10 years’ research experience.
    • Exposure to multi-stakeholder and/or multi-country research would be an advantage.
    • Availability to contribute to the programme over a 5-year period as a freelancer
    • A track-record of peer reviewed, accredited publications (at least 10 publications, with some first authored and some international).
    • An understanding of research processes and activities.
    • Fluency in English with excellent written and verbal communication
    • Fluency in one or more of the following languages would be an advantage: Spanish and French.
    • Competency in computer programmes such as Word, OneDrive, Excel, PowerPoint, referencing software.
    • Academic/Youth related Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) affiliation will be an advantage.

    Duties & Responsibilities    

    • As part of a large multi-country research team under the leadership and guidance of the Principal Investigators, provide expert insights drawing from your particular regional context, to improve cultural and linguistic diversity across the programme.
    • Review and editing of selected programme outputs towards improving cultural accessibility (for eg. synthesis report, mid-term report).
    • Ability to support translation of abstracts (where appropriate) for selected programme outputs might be required.
    • Advise on key project outputs towards more accessible, useful and contextually appropriate evidence for decision-makers in policy and practice.
    • Attend CoP events (a minimum of 3 per annum).
    • Attend CoP meetings (1 per annum).
    • Attend project conferences (3 over the course of the programme).

    Project Director - Pietermaritzburg

    Job Advert Summary    

    The CCBR is looking for a suitably qualified person to take on project director responsibilities at the Sweetwaters office. The successful candidate will oversee several projects at the site, focused on the HIV prevention cascade. Potential candidates should have strong analytical skills including good understanding of research methods, advanced data analysis skills, understanding of rigorous impact evaluation methods, systematic reviews, meta-analysis and statistical/mathematical modelling and good planning and analytical thinking.

    The successful candidate will report to the senior management team and study principal investigators, cross project units, project team and site support staff to successfully implement their role. This position is offered on a 24 month contract.

    Minimum requirements:

    • Masters degree, in any one of the following areas (or similar):
    • MBChB
    • Public Health
    • Statistics/biostatistics
    • Social Science
    • Additionally applicants must hold a relevant PhD degree, or demonstrate progress towards a PhD in a relevant field as above.
    • Previous project management experience with clinical trials or intervention projects
    • A sound conceptual grounding in research methods;
    • Candidates must have an interest in practices and research that seeks to find implementable solutions that emerge from the scientific literature;
    • Good planning and organisational skills, including the ability to working well under pressure;
    • Good communication skills (verbal as well as report writing);
    • Excellent writing skills necessary for publication in internationally accredited peer-reviewed academic journals, and for drafting briefing papers and reports;
    • Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination and drive;
    • The ability and enthusiasm to engage as a team player in large scale multidisciplinary research projects, to manage research teams, and to mentor and train team members.
    • Preference will be given to candidates who have:

    An established research career as evidenced by publications.

    • Proposal writing to secure external funds;
    • A valid and unendorsed driver’s license
    • Experience working in urban, peri-urban and rural communities, and willingness to work after hours and over weekends and in rural communities
    • Bilingual (English and isiZulu)

    Key responsibilities:

    • Support the HIV research agenda of the CCBR and the HSRC;
    • Manage research teams and large scale long term research projects;
    • Mentor fellow employees and emerging researchers;
    • Deliver high-quality results and reports to meet set budgets and deadlines;
    • Network with government and other scientists;;
    • Conduct high level scholarly research which meets the challenge of peer review, and has both strategic and policy relevance;
    • Communicate research findings through modalities like policy briefs;
    • Build national and international research links; and
    • Manage staff and build capacity within the division.
