    Senior Engineer - Water & Waste Water Treatment

    The Water and Waste Water Treatment Practice was established in 2010 and operates within the Water Business Unit. Since its establishment the practice has experienced growth to a practice that contributes approximately 40 000 man hours annually to approximately 25 projects within Hatch Goba. As a result of the success of the practice and the anticipated future growth, a number of positions have become available including that of a Lead Civil Engineer.The successful candidate will be part of an engineering team providing multidisciplinary engineering services to large and small projects and will report to the Project and Engineering Managers on the projects that he/she contributes to. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will be responsible for supervising a team of civil, hydro technical, geotechnical andcivil structures engineers, designers and draftspersons. In certain instances the successful candidate will fulfill the role of package manager and act in a Lead Project Engineering role managing a multidisciplinary team delivering the engineering of small to medium projects and packages within larger projects.

    The successful candidate should have an appreciation of Municipal Water and Waste Water Treatment Process Design, have experience within the sector and should have an interest in developing Client relationships and new business. A detailed list of the successful candidates responsibilities is provided below.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assist the Engineering Manager with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, quantities, cost and schedule
    • Prepare Engineering Work Packages (EWPs) in consultation with the Engineering Manager
    • Assign work tasks (via signed off EWPs) to individuals and continuously monitor progress and quality
    • Develop the manpower schedules to be part of the engineering and project schedule in conjunction with the other disciplines
    • Develop the work plans for insertion into the project specific execution plan
    • Develop and maintain the project scope of work documentation (Facilities Description Report) and revise as required during the design evolution
    • Assist in the compilation and delivery of monthly engineering status reports
    • Participate in and contribute to design reviews
    • Represent the discipline in the project engineering coordination meetings
    • Provide and/or coordinate training for resources assigned to the project
    • Prepare and/or review project procedures, standard specifications and design criteria

    Essential

    Qualifications and Experience

    • A recognized degree in civil engineering from an accredited university
    • Professional Engineer registered with Engineering Council of South Africa
    • 10+ years experience in relevant civil design
    • Must have Water & Waste Water Treatment experience
    • Ability to manage and delegate to individuals to attain quality, cost and schedule objectives
    • Experience with working on projects in a multi-disciplinary environment
    • Sound understanding of design engineering codes and technical standards
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills
    • Good planning and organizational skills
    • Ability to function with minimal supervision
    • Good safety awareness

    Preferred

    • Must be capable of leading an engineering team for medium sized jobs or facilities within a larger project
    • Should take responsibility for schedule, budget and quality
    • Must be capable of solving Water & Waste Water Treatment problem by understanding all applicable disciplines and must be able to integrate design inputs
    • The person should preferable be Client facing
    • Ideally should have an interest in Business Development

    Summary

    The Construction Manager working from the project office is responsible for the overall planning, direction, organization, and budgeting of all construction or maintenance work, on the project to the highest safety and quality levels within time and costs constraints. The Construction Manager participates in the conceptual development of a construction project and oversees organization, scheduling and implementation strategy.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Responsible for all safety planning associated with the project construction execution methods selection, with support of the Project Manager and Site Health and Safety Manager
    • Responsible through the constructability coordinator to set up and oversee the constructability process
    • Coordinate with the client, project management, and project services in identifying required reporting procedures and formats for client and Hatch management needs
    • Ensure Construction Work Packages (CWP) are defined to a level sufficient for a level three schedule
    • Ensure construction work packages are coordinated with engineering and procurement
    • Ensure corporate policies and procedures are fully implemented
    • Establishes project field procedures and objectives within corporate policies and procedures as necessitated by jobsite conditions
    • Review and approve construction estimates, budgets, forecasts and schedules
    • Review construction/erection drawings and specifications prepared for the project for economic constructability, develop strategies for erection interfaces, determine appropriate construction methods, and preempt problem areas
    • Ensure the necessary permits and licenses (notice of project, insurance certificates, worker’s compensation, environmental permits etc.) are identified and obtained prior to the start of construction activities on site
    • Liaises with the Project Manager and the project core team of design engineers, procurement, planning and scheduling and other personnel and other personnel as required in setting priorities to ensure timely construction performance
    • Develop site organization and staffing requirements required to execute construction activities within project schedule and acceptable costs
    • Direct, monitor and motivate subordinate construction specialists in performance and direct activities as necessary to ensure project requirements are achieved
    • Establish the construction requirements for pre-fabrication and modularization
    • Provide construction technical support to other site functions as needed
    • Ensure that the Project Manager is informed of construction concerns
    • Ensure adherence to all local regulations and statutory requirements in site activities planning
    • Assist the procurement team to review contractual agreements with clients, suppliers, and contractors
    • Liaise with client representatives as required to ensure shutdowns, relocations, tie ins, etc. are planned safely and in a timely manner with minimum disruption
    • Recommend requirements for construction resources and strategies to meet the schedule in each area
    • Participates in the labor studies, manpower sourcing exercise and the establishment of the industrial relations strategy
    • Cooperate with the Pre-Operational Testing Manager in the planning of transfer packages
    • Coordinate the preparation and issue of the Construction Execution Plan.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Essential

    • Demonstrated health and safety management focus in the construction phase of project delivery, and extensive knowledge of health and safety management procedures, safe work practices, and applicable legislation
    • Engineering degree or equivalent
    • Minimum five to seven years’ previous construction management experience
    • Strong leadership skills, the ability to lead a team and fit into a team environment
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
    • Effective report writing skills, planning and organizational skills
    • Well-developed communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills
    • Able to communicate directly with the client on key issues
    • Extensive knowledge of all phases of construction operations relating to field activities of all engineering disciplines, construction and maintenance practices, procedures and techniques, and applicable codes and standards
    • Familiarity with a wide range of equipment, tools, and technologies used in construction

    Summary

    The Lead Planner is responsible for the delivery of project planning and progress measurement, ensuring that Hatch procedures and best practices are applied, as appropriate, and recommending changes to the Project Controls Manager where required. The Project Lead Planner is responsible for developing and maintaining the project master schedule to meet the project objectives.

    Managing the planning resources allocated to the project by leading and directing Planners/ Schedulers and subordinates so that they are motivated and have access to the required resources in order to meet the work objectives set for them. Manage and mentor planning/ scheduling team to ensure that staff has an understanding of what is expected of them and has the necessary skills to execute the requirements. Identification training and development requirements for staff and ensure skills development takes place.

      • Confirm and refine FEL4 level 3 scheduling (incl. early works and understand schedule basis).
    • Porject Master Schedule Development
      • Confirm and refine FEL4 level 3 scheduling
      • Identify and schedule critical vendor data requirements
      • Populate approved measurable commodity quantities and labor to produce baseline S-curves
      • Participate in project schedule risk analysis and include resultant contingency in baseline
      • Maintain FEL4 schedule basis
      • Using progress reports (early and late curves) and project schedule (level 3 baseline); maintain, optimize and monitor progress. Identify and resolve issues
      • Develop FEL4 level 3 commissioning schedule
      • Analyze contractor level 4 schedule and provide recommendations.
    • Project Schedule Monitoring And Updates Preferred
      • Generate and verify weekly updates and issue progress reports
      • Maintain and optimize schedule, monitor progress, highlight and resolve schedule issues
      • Generate all progress curves
      • Develop and maintain commodity and resource profile
      • Extract and publish four-week look ahead schedule
      • Monitor slippages and critical and near critical paths and discuss with Project Controls Manager for resolution
      • Establish all equipment/ material and contractor ROS (Required on Site) dates
      • Provide schedule input to the procurement bid process including reporting requirements and vendor and contractor milestone dates
      • Assist with bid evaluation and ongoing management of the vendors and contractors with respect to their schedule commitments.
    • Project Trend and Change Management
      • Once a change is approved, maintain and optimize the schedule, monitor progress and highlight/ resolve areas of potential concern.
    • Project Progress Measurement and Earned Value
      • Generate and verify weekly updates and issue progress reports
      • Obtain progress info via progress reports, EPCM status report, vendor progress report and cost report and calculate progress for construction packages.

     

    Qualifications and Experience

    Essential

    • Tertiary qualification in engineering or other relevant discipline or appropriate substituted experience
    • Two to four years’ relevant experience in managerial position supported by five to eight years’ experience as a planner in a multi discipline project environment
    • Sound technical knowledge in a multi-discipline environment
    • Knowledge of the estimating and tendering processes
    • Knowledge in the use of Primavera Project Planner P6
    • Technical overview of work methods and techniques
    • Risk management principles
    • Good knowledge of project management principles
    • Knowledge of forms of contract will be a definite advantage.

    Preferred

    • Interpersonal and good communication skills in the areas of both written and verbal communication
    • Computer literacy (MS Office package)
    • Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines
    • Planning and organizing
    • Problem solving and mitigating skills
    • Presentation skills.
