    Senior Assistant Director: Academic Programmes and Scheduling - Department of Enrolment nd Student Administration

    JOB PURPOSE:

    • To manage the unit for Academic Programmes and Scheduling in line with the strategic perspective of DESA to provide enrolment and student administrative services to support the entire student life cycle, from recruitment to graduation. To collaborate with the relevant stakeholders to deliver up-to-date curriculum information in line with UP protocols and procedures.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The successful candidate's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

    Human Resources (HR) and Financial Management:

    • Adhere to and implement HR and Finance policies and procedures;
    • Ensure Employment Equity (EE) goals are pursued and attained;
    • Drive staff development and implement training as required;
    • Guide staff in unit to reach departmental and operational targets;
    • Develop, monitor and control unit’s operating budget;
    • Develop, monitor and control unit’s HR budget;
    • Ensure compliance with UP procurement policies;

    Management of Academic programmes:

    • Manage the regulation amendment process for changes to curriculum, in liaison with the relevant stakeholder to consider and implement changes to curriculum;
    • Manage and check curriculum details against statutory guidelines from Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Council on Higher Education (CHE) and South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), in liaison with Department of Institutional planning (DIP);
    • Provide support to the Faculty Heads of Student Administration regarding agendas and minutes;
    • Maintain repository of information relating to curriculum development and changes, with version control implementation;

    Development and management of lecture, test and examination schedules and UP Calendar:

    • Manage and oversee the development of lecture, test and examination schedules;
    • Ensure engagement with the relevant stakeholders on the different campuses to conclude schedules based on registered number of students;

    Monitor and oversee the distribution of information relating to schedules as per regulations and curriculum development; Manage and oversee the booking of venues for academic activities on all UP campuses;

    • Manage a planned, coordinated academic calendar;
    • Provide a secretariat function to the Timetable Committee;
    • Management of Faculty yearbooks, regulations and academic policies: 
    • Manage the updating and publishing of Faculty yearbooks;
    • Manage the updating and publication of the General Academic Regulations and Student Rules;
    • Manage updates of relevant policies and standard operating procedures for the department;
    • Manage the compilation of curriculum booklets.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A relevant Honour’s degree; WITH

    A total of six years’ experience (Two years must have been in management) with the following:

    • A university environment working on academic programmes and PeopleSoft administrative system;
    • Collaboration with staff at all levels and with persons, groups or entities within and outside of the University;
    • University regulation amendment processes and implications; and understanding compliance relating to external regulatory bodies;
    • Knowledge of lecture, test and examination scheduling procedures; 
    • Both Human Resources and Financial management.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    Knowledge of:

    • HR processes with specific reference to performance evaluation, staff development and succession planning;
    • University related administrative systems and processes, including PeopleSoft;
    • Institutional knowledge regarding structures, rules and regulations of the University;
    • Regulatory framework to assist faculties in reviewing and restructuring of curricula;
    • The set up and integration of academic programmes and modules in the faculty yearbooks; in-depth technical knowledge of degree name structures/nomenclature;
    • Faculty administrative processes;

    Technical competencies:

    • PeopleSoft, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office programmes;
    • Language proficiency in English (terminology/research/proofreading/editing/report writing);

    Behavioural competencies:

    Ability to:

    • Re-evaluate existing processes and improve on these;
    • Take initiative, and to do long-term planning proactively and independently;
    • Work under pressure and to fixed deadlines;
    • Communicate and network extensively;
    • Negotiate and implement conflict management skills;
    • Work accurately and meticulously, paying attention to detail whilst under pressure;
    • Organise and plan effectively to make informed decisions;
    • Solve problems in accordance with set structures and frameworks;

    Lecturer / Senior Lecturer (One Position) - Department of Plant and Soil Sciences - Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Undergraduate and Honours level teaching in plant pathology;
    • Supervision of postgraduate students in plant pathology;
    • Acquiring research funding;
    • Conducting and leading research in plant pathology focused on innovative plant health management; 
    • Initiating community engagement projects, and engaging in professional development activities.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Lecturer:

    • A PhD, MSc and BSc or BSc Agric degree in plant pathology or closely related agricultural field;
    • Preference will be given to a plant pathologist with experience in applied virology, epidemiology and/or innovative technology and strategies for disease control. These focus areas are based on a need to generate knowledge that builds upon and complements departmental and institutional strengths in plant pathology and addresses national strategic needs;
    • Minimum of one-year teaching experience at undergraduate level;
    • Valid driver's license.

    Senior Lecturer (Same as for Lecturer, plus):

    • Minimum of two years teaching at undergraduate level;
    • Evidence of postgraduate supervision;
    • An in-depth understanding of basic principles of plant pathology;
    • A track record of research and publications in the relevant field in Web of Science accredited journals;
    • Substantial teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels;
    • Potential to be established as an independent researcher in the near future based on a recent body of work.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
    • Documented proof of own research outputs in plant pathology;
    • Able to seek out funding opportunities and successfully apply for local and international funding;
    • Must be able to initiate and manage research partnerships with external stakeholders (e.g. Industry, Government, Industry, Science Councils);
    • Appropriate language and communication skills, both written and verbal;
    • Good knowledge of statistical analyses relevant to general plant pathology research;
    • Be able to collaborate with colleagues within and between departments and foster a constructive research dynamic in the discipline.

    Counselling Psychologist Internship - Department of Student Affairs

    JOB PURPOSE:

    • The incumbent will be responsible for rendering counselling psychology services to students/young adults to promote academic success and emotional wellness. This will include psychotherapeutic services and the development and identification of preventative and self-help programmes for the purposes of the promotion of well-being, and to enhance the academic success of students/young adults. The incumbent will have to comply with the requirements of the HPCSA in the above regards. This is a training position as part of the counselling psychology programme.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

    Psychotherapeutic counselling services to students/young adults, to promote academic success and emotional wellness:

    • Rendering counselling services (individually and group work), and present programmes to enhance student emotional wellness;
    • Providing therapeutic services to children, adolescents and other client profiles at other campuses and sites, as part of training requirements;
    • Consultation with Head: Student Counselling and colleagues;

    Development of preventative and self-help, academic and therapeutic programmes in view of the identified needs of students:

    • Developing new programmes according to the identified needs;
    • Co-operating and receiving feedback from internal role players by ways of applicable data and research;

    Career testing and academic support services and programmes:

    • Developing and delivering academic support services and programmes;
    • Providing feedback to students and parents after testing/counselling;
    • Consulting with academic personnel, relevant internal and external role players, and students, to determine needs, problems and possibilities for programmes and other relevant interventions;

    Research:

    • Contributing to research to support the department in developing tailor-made programmes in line with the academic and emotional needs of the student population at the University of Pretoria;

    Professional development;

    • Enhancing personal level of knowledge by way of studying applicable literature and research to ensure continuous learning and training;
    • Participating in case presentation for the purpose of evaluation by supervisors and/or other professionals;
    • Undergoing mandatory weekly supervision;

    Participation in institutional activities:

    • Participating as a team member within the Student Counselling Unit in all its activities and its networks within the University.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Proven registration as a MA student in Counselling Psychology at an accredited university/college;
    • Registration as student/intern with HPCSA (Counselling psychology);
    • Compliance in the above with the HPCSA regulation
    • Completed course work as part of first year MA/MSc Counselling Psychology training;
    • Successful practical work as part of first year MA/MSc Counselling Psychology training.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    Knowledge of the following:

    • Psychological interventions at a professional level;
    • Short term and brief therapy techniques;
    • A range of psychometric assessments;
    • The Code of Ethics and Conduct for Psychologists (HPCSA);
    • Ability to diagnose psychological problems and psychopathology within the Scope of Practice for Counselling psychologists; 
    • Flexibility as the service demands require;
    • Good interpersonal skills;
    • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team;
    • Efficient planning, organising and prioritising skills;
    • Ability to work under pressure and manage crisis interventions;
    • Professionalism, confidentiality and sensitivity towards the diversity of students;
    • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal);
    • Computer skills in MS Word, PowerPoint and e-mail;
    • Ethical insight and reliability.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • Practical experience within a clinic environment;
    • Experience with psychological assessments and psychometric tests;
    • Experience with report writing;
    • Registration with the Professional Board for Psychology of the HPCSA as an intern Psychologist, prior to or simultaneous to, taking up the position.
