    Electronics Engineer - Pretoria

    Software Engineer - Pretoria

    About the job:

    The CSIR has a vacancy for a Software Engineer in the Command, Control and Integrated Systems Impact Area within the Defence and Security Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible to design and develop software solutions including middleware and software architectures for command and control, situation awareness, integration, interoperability in military, non-military and safety and security domains. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Interpret user requirements to define software solutions;Determine operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development, and proposed solutions;

    Senior Researcher: Resource Economist Expert - Pretoria

    About the Job:

    The CSIR has a vacancy for a Senior Researcher in Climate Services research group of Holistic Climate Change Impact Area, within the Smart Places cluster. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Modelling the economic effects of climate change or climate change policies using economy-wide models (such as computable general equilibrium models or large-scale energy models) or modelling in specific sectors that are large energy consumers or significant contributors to climate change.
    • Lead the Research Group on projects and initiatives that require assessments of resource economics.
    • Lead the business case development, preparation and completion of proposals/deliverables for the public and corporate sector on climate finance, and modelling of costs of climate change solutions;
    • Contribute to CSIR’s thought leadership on climate finance, and resource economics modelling;
    • Lead the Research Group in collaborative efforts, including proposal writing, in pursuance of contract R&D in the field of climate finance.
    • Collaborate with CSIR’s Business Development and Commercialisation (BD&C) to position the Research Group, the Impact Area and the CSIR to be an effective role player on linkages between climate finance, and climate change solutions.
    • Mentor and formally supervise the post-graduate research of candidate-researchers and researchers within the research group.

    Qualifications, skills, and experience:

    • A Master’s degree in economics, or a closely related field with at least five years’ experience with a track record of deploying macroeconomic computable general equilibrium (CGE) models to shape policies or strategies in government, consultancy, academia, industry or a financial institution.
    • A Doctoral degree would be an added advantage.
    •  Excellent knowledge of systems modelling, coding and modelling in GAMS; knowledge of MPSGE is a plus.
    • Knowledge of environmental sustainability opportunities and challenges in national and multinational companies;

    Business Development Manager - Pretoria

    The CSIR has a vacancy for a Business Development Manager in the CSIR Conferencing and Accommodation (C&A) portfolio and will be placed at the CSIR Conferencing and Accommodation centre.     Key responsibilities:

    Strategic planning

    • Keep abreast with the industry developments and trends and contribute to the C&A business plan;
    • Lead Front Office, Sales and Reservations teams (reporting departments) to ensure that their service and product offerings remain competitive, cutting edge and of a 5-star standard;
    • Assist in the development of the marketing and sales strategy in collaboration with the Marketing Manager and sales team, including setting specific product/service sale targets, competitive activity, sales effort, and promotions programmes.

    Operations

    • Develop and implement operational plans for reporting departments in line with the CSIR C&A marketing strategy to ensure that the C&A achieves its sales targets;

    Safety, Security, Health, and Environment Manager

    About the job:

    The CSIR has a vacancy for Safety, Security, Health, and Environment Manager in the CSIR Conferencing and Accommodation(C&A) Portfolio. The incumbent will manage all aspects of Safety, Security, Health and Environment for the Conferencing and Accommodation group. He/she will develop Health and Safety plans, prepare, and enforce policies, evaluate practices and procedures to ensure compliance within the legislative guidelines and providing support to the C&A Group.     Key responsibilities:

    • Present events at the City Joint Operations Committee for compliance, train staff, conduct evacuation drills and implement corrective actions of the Conferencing and Accommodation Group. Evaluate effectiveness of the SSHE management systems and processes in achieving the C & A strategic goals;

    Leadership

    • Develop SSHE strategies and operational plans and foster a culture that promotes positive support for implementation of SHE Policies and related procedures;
    • Plan for the overall management of SSHE, deciding priorities, and establishment of adequate systems and performance standards;
    • Assess and lead the C&A Group to comply to all OHS Act, SASREA Legislation and Standards as far as reasonably practicable;
    • Prepare and assist for C&A Group SHE audits, ensuring the compliance in the group;
    • Engage with internal and external clients to advise on planned venue setups, safety and security plans and submissions to local government for permits and other council services. Advise Clients on Health Safety Security Environment related issues around their events;

    Operations

    • Monitor and evaluate Health Safety Security Environmental risks during setups, event and breakdowns and implementing measures for mitigation as and when required;
    • Oversee the drawing up of and review and approve floorplans and exhibition stand designed in terms of safety legislation and space planning requirements and use these as tools to assist in the selling of venues and the planning and safe setup of client events;
    • Oversee the compliance and submission of safety files for events to the City of Tshwane Joint Operations Committee to obtain timeous City Council approval of events;
    • Approve all necessary safety and setup documentation from exhibitors and communication thereof;
    • Manage the relationship and service of CSIR Security for the C&A Group facilities and clients. Coordinate with Main Campus security on event specific requirements as and when access is required to the centre;
    • Perform ongoing Risk assessments and facilitate the implementation of corrective actions;
    • Prepare and assist for C&A Group SHE audits, ensuring the compliance in the group;

    Record Keeping

    • Maintain records of all client and subcontractor related safety documentation: JOC files, event contractor induction registers, attendance registers held with ESSPC and SAPS for events as well as minutes of the meetings;

    Other

    • Establish the CSIR C&A workplace health & safety committee, participate in SHE meetings and advice on measures to mitigate threats, risks and prevent losses;

    Human Resource Management

    • Manage, mentor, coach and play an advisory role for staff growth and development;
    • Conduct performance management contracting and reviews for all staff at the recommended periods, for the purpose of managing and improving both individuals’ performance and service delivery;

    • Ensure best practices are maintained with suppliers regarding pricing, service delivery, quality, BBBEE requirements and negotiate the best pricing;
    • Ensure all food and beverage suppliers conform to the required food safety and hygiene standards and present valid certification thereof;
    • Procurement and stock control of commodities, products and services for kitchen and banqueting departments;
    • Processing of operational and financial documents and records on procurement, stock, and point of sales (POS) systems;
    • Data capturing and reporting;
    • Stock controls with month end stock counts and reports.

    Qualifications, skills, and experience:

    • A national diploma in hospitality management, procurement or logistics or other related field, food safety diplomas or certificates with at least five years’ experience in in hospitality procurement;
    • Experience in government procurement regulations, the PFMA and National Treasury Regulations will be an advantage;
    • Valid code 8 driver’s license;
    • Knowledge of suppliers in the hospitality industry;

    Barista/Barman/Driver

    About the job:

    The CSIR has a vacancy for a Barista/Barman/Driver in the Conferencing and Accommodation portfolio. The incumbent will be responsible for making and serving cold and hot beverages, explaining the ingredients to customers in an engaging manner and conducting onsite deliveries and collections as and when required. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Receive and preparing hot and cold beverage orders from service staff for sit-down customers;
    • Welcome take-away customers, informing them about hot and cold beverage specials or new items, answering questions and taking orders;
    • Prepare hot and cold beverage products according to standard recipes and SOPs to ensure consistent cost and quality control;
    • Clean, restock, and sanitize equipment and utensils and work area;
    • Participate in daily and monthly cash-ups and stock takes and inform manager of stock requirements timeously;
    • Adhere to all food safety regulations and quality controls and liquor license regulations;
    • Make deliveries and collections on the CSIR campus as and when required (food, beverages, stock, onsite catering).

    Qualifications, skills and experience:

    • A Grade ten, Barista training, Cocktail training with at least two to  three years’ experience in a similar environment;
    • Driver’s license;
    • Tertiary food and beverage preparation and service qualification advantageous;
    • Great communication skills;
    • A friendly personality;
    • Customer service skills and knowledge;
    • High level of attention-to-detail;
    • Enthusiasm to develop your skills and knowledge;
    • Adaptable to change and willing to embrace new ideas and processes;
    • Ability to work unsupervised and deliver quality work;
