    Development Technologist (Muizenberg)

    Purpose:

    • Cape Herb & Spice is looking for a Development Technologist to fulfil a vital role within our Tea and Herb & Spice categories, focusing primarily on a key local customer’s requirements as well as long-life dry beverage exports, expressing creative flair in helping develop commercially viable and delicious tea and herb & spice concepts in line with current trends.

    Key Functional Areas:

    • Execute the product development process within given deadlines, ensuring product conforms to country-specific legislation as well as customer-specific regulations on product and packaging.
    • All stages of the development process to be followed and filed meticulously.
    • This procedure involves:
    • HACCP compliance
    • Recipe development and tastings
    • Raw material costings
    • Supplier interaction
    • Factory implementation in terms of factory trials and travel tests
    • Artwork approvals
    • Specification generation and maintenance
    • Technical support to both QA department and sales teams alike
    • Play your role in maintaining the compliance to business food safety, ethical, religious and sustainability certifications
    • Effective execution of launches through thorough communication, consultation and involvement of internal departments.

    Required Knowledge & Skills:

    • Computer Literacy (Microsoft Office)
    • Excel skills – Intermediate to advanced
    • Driver’s license essential

    Required Prior Learning/ Experience:

    • Degree in Food Technology or Food Science
    • 2-3 years’ experience within an NPD role

    Production Supervisor (Muizenberg)

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Supervise staff and all production activities in the production department to ensure efficiency, quality, cost and any specific performance KPI’s requirements are achieved.
    • Plan the resources necessary to achieve production plans.
    • Perform administrative tasks required to provide the necessary data and information to the business.
    • Provide input to support continuous improvement within the production and support departments

    Job Objectives:

    • Supervision of Staff
    • Manage day-to-day production activities
    • Drive Productivity through efficiency
    • Resource Planning based on changing shift patterns and staff movements
    • Apply best practice data capturing, ensuring accurate reporting
    • Housekeeping, Health, Safety and Environment Compliance
    • Drive continuous Food Safety Culture & Certification Compliance

    Required Knowledge:

    • Ability to perform tasks as detailed above
    • Undergone Good Manufacturing Process Training*
    • Undergone training in HACCP and BRC as applicable to the role*
    • Undergone HSE training as determined by the company*
    • Ability to comply to medical health requirements as set by the company

    Required Prior Learning/Experience:

    • Willing and able to work shifts
    • Minimum of 2 years previous experience supervising/leading a team

    Development Technologist

    Purpose:
    The Spice Division is looking for a dynamic Development Technologist in a junior role to support the team in leading projects & innovation for key customers across the globe to continue growth of this innovative business.

    Role Objectives:

    • Project management
    • Product development

    Key Functional Duties:

    • Keep abreast of, and research new concepts, trends, market activity and innovation within the herb and spice categories
    • Support in developing successful, commercially viable products that are sustainable and in line with the trends and intended target market
    • Project manage and assist in executing all stages of the product development process within given deadlines to ensure the product is launched on time and all details recorded is accurate and meets customer requirements.
    • Ensure product conforms to country specific regulations on product and packaging.
    • Support in sustainable sourcing of new raw materials and packaging from compliant suppliers
    • Ensure NPD compliance is in line with company certifications, for both tea and spice and working collaboratively with Food Technologist to maintain & update accordingly.
    • Creating and maintaining product specifications & in process specifications
    • Review of product labels & specifications / standards for customer and legislative compliance.
    • Support in liaising & thorough communication between internal operational departments on all new projects to ensure effective launches (production briefings).
    • Support in effective execution of launches within internal departments.
    • Technical support in problem solving within the department and to internal departments.
    • Recipe tastings & testing of products to ensure that product is safe and of acceptable quality.
    • Assisting in factory trials and travel tests.

    Education & Required Knowledge
    Below qualification or equivalent. 1 – 2 years’ work experience will be advantageous

    • Food Technology
    • Consumer Science 
    • Bsc Food Science

    Advantageous experience in:

    • Project Management
    • Product Development

    Other skills required:

    • Computer Literacy (Microsoft office)
    • Excel Fluency – Intermediate level
    • Excellent verbal and written communication in English

    Production Manager (Muizenberg)

    Purpose of the job:

    • The Production Manager leads the Tea Divisions production team to ensure plant metrics are achieved in a safe, cost efficient and productive manner. The key functions of the role include managing production schedules, accountable for the achievement of area specific performance objectives, product quality, variable costs, productivity and safety. The Production Manager will be a key driver in development and implementation of process and facility improvement initiatives.

    Key Functional Areas:

    • Responsible for overall management of the production operations.
    • Develop and manage monthly/annual metrics to support operation productivity, quality, delivery and safety. Motivate team members to achieve goals.
    • Responsible for continuous improvement, management of best practices/benchmarking, documenting standard work, and ensuring highest possible levels of productivity.
    • Drive the implementation of safety programs to ensure safety is promoted across all operations on the site
    • Managing logistical operations.
    • Ensure teams are appropriately staffed.
    • Review current and future production capacity requirements.
    • Review and provide input to production plans.
    • Communicate effectively with internal departments to support production demand, growth initiatives and customer service.
    • Manage metrics and drive root cause analysis to achieve improvement objectives.
    • Perform job evaluations for personnel.

    Required Prior Learning/ Experience:

    • Relevant Tertiary Education from an accredited institution is preferred.
    • Minimum of 3 years of production management experience in a FMCG manufacturing environment is required.
    • Experience in implementing world class manufacturing practices.
    • Minimum of three years of people management experience is required.
    • Proficient in working in Microsoft programs (outlook, excel, word).
