    Forestry Manager - Fire & Silviculture Development

    As a Forestry Manager - Fire & Silviculture Development, you will be responsible for:.

    • Gain understanding of the business & Plantation management needs for technical development and innovation  
    • Evaluate potential systems by proper due diligence & cost benefit analysis.
    • Recommend system relevant to business owner’s needs
    • Assist to procure, set up & implement systems, monitor progress, identify gaps & assist with improvements & supply training.
    • Ensure all operations comply with service level agreement
    • Evaluate and assist formulating strategies and tactics for effective fire risk management.
    • Ensure Fire Risk Management System (FRMS) is used to identify risks, record & implement fire control procedures to ensure the effective protection of people, plantation & other assets from forest fires
    • Ensure all resources are ready & available to immediately respond in the event of a fire
    • Develop and maintain relationships with neighbours and other companies in the Fire Protection Association to enhance fire protection measures and response capability
    • Ensure that all fire reports are on central database, review reports for integrity of data and analyse trends
    • Do fire post mortems, record and close out recommendations on (FRMS) Fire Risk Management System
    • Analyse training gaps and effectiveness.
    • Ensure training providers are accredited and training is in line with Sappi standards for Sappi employees and Contractors
    • Liaise with training providers and attend training to ensure quality of training provided is effective and addressing the identified risk/gap area
    • Plan and run annual readiness simulations
    • Ensure that relations with communities & other internal & external stakeholders are effectively maintained & managed in order to ensure company image is upheld, risks mitigated & relationships enhanced.
    • Ensure technical transfer to internal and external stakeholders
    • Participate and lead internal and external technical groups
    • Ensure that road construction and maintenance plans meet risk mitigation requirements for fire and operational delivery risk
    • Compile in conjunction with annual tactical road maintenance plan & is within budget
    • Conduct Safety inspections & ensure contractors & other stakeholders comply with safety procedures & comply with legislative company policies & procedures.
    • Conduct Fire Management audits on all districts
    • Arrange flight inspections, record action plan on FRMS (Fire Risk Management System) and manage actions to ensure compliance
    • Co-ordinate and be involved in external audits to ensure fire management is up to date
    • Prepare the Annual budget
    • Forecast & monitor monthly activity & overhead costs
    • Administer and update FRMS (Fire Risk Management System) with process changes
    • Support for Eqstra fleet management to ensure issues and maintenance relating to Sappi leased fire vehicles effective
    • Ensure appropriate licensing and exemption on fire truck licensing is resolved
    • Ensure Sappi’s ICASA radio licenses, Vital Weather and FPA annual subscriptions are up to date
    • Assist with compilation of the insurance booklet for Sappi

    What are we looking for?

    • National Diploma in Forestry, Agriculture or Horticulture
    • Bachelors' degree in Forestry or related disciplines preferred
    • At least 5 years relevant experience
    • Valid Code EB Drivers license

    Management Forester - Mpumalanga (Evergreen)

    As a Management Forester, you will be responsible for:

    • Build, maintain and reinforce a “predict and prevent” safety culture in all integrated operations
    • Inspect operations regularly to identify risks & ensure that timeous action (blanking & pest control, coppice management) is undertaken.
    • Plan & conduct regular field inspections to ensure that crops, through the timing of operations (weed control, pest & disease management), achieve maximum yields within cost constraints.
    • Ensure that plantations use the Fire Risk Management System (FRMS) to identify risks. Record & implement fire control procedures in order to ensure the effective protection of people, plantations and other assets from forest fires.
    • Develop a tactical plan & ensure that the annual plan of operations for both commercial and open areas comply with standards and service level agreements
    • Develop a pre-harvest plan per compartment in collaboration with the Contractor and Silviculture.
    • Conduct a risk assessment per compartment in order to mitigate potential risks.
    • Ensure that the Harvesting budget is managed effectively by ensuring sales target tons/per day is achieved.
    • Compile in conjunction with Roads Engineer, annual tactical road maintenance plan.
    • Scheduling of short-haul and loading operations to ensure rail/road transport is released on time.
    • Ensure that company assets such as buildings, villages and company houses are maintained and managed effectively according to set standards (hygiene & legal compliance) and within budget constraints.
    • Ensure that relations with communities, other internal and external stakeholders are effectively maintained and managed in order to ensure company image is upheld, risks mitigated and relationships enhanced.

    What are we looking for?

    • National Diploma in Forestry or related qualification
    • Minimum of three years relevant experience.
    • Valid driver’s license.

    Dry End Assistant - Shalaamboot

    As a Dry End Assistant, you will be responsible for:

    • Assist in the clearing of broke from the spools returned from the winder. This will go hand in hand with the input of the tonnages into the PTS system.
    • Assist in the housekeeping in and outside of the dryer, Calendar-,pope- and kitchen rail areas.
    • Report equipment problems to the Shift Superintendent.
    • Responsible for taking and transferal of samples to the laboratory.
    • Assist with rope changes on the machine.
    • Assist in the preparation of clothing for the machine.
    • Assist on the winder on an adhoc basis as required.
    • Stand in for the Dryerman as required.
    • Assist on KLB paper machine shuts, as required / directed.
    • Assist with the feeding of paper after a break. The incumbent shall when instructed to do so, follow and comply to all work-related and safety instructions given to him / her by a person authorized to do so. This includes assisting in other areas in the Paper Mills jurisdiction, other than their normal functional area.
    • Assists with feeding of paper slab onto the broke conveyor for repulping.
    • Inspect all printouts of every reel against standard specifications for mass and moisture. Makes recommendations to shift sup regarding the findings.
    • Required to do a comparison of every reel against standards whereby the shift sup will have to be informed to make a decision regarding the paper.
    • Ensure that all webs requiring a retest is marked “HOLD”. These webs must also be sampled and delivered to the lab for further testing.
    • Inspect all jumbos for appearance, coverage, formation, sizes, winding, barcoding, levels, slackness, stencilling, strapping, wrapping, creases, blotches and dirt.
    • Enter all defective webs into the computer to provide an up to date list of rejects at the end of shift.
    • Enter reel details on winder PTS before winding and changes the details after winding ins the event of paper being rejected.
    • Marks trial reel with trail tape when produced.

    What are we looking for? 

    • Grade 12 with Maths and Physical Science or,
    • N3 Pulp & Paper.
    • 0-6 months production experience.

    Senior Maintenance Engineer - Shalaamboot

    As a Senior Maintenance Engineer, you will be responsible for:

    • All statutory requirements in the section in accordance with the OHS Act.
    • Support ISO9020 (Quality Management System), ISO14001 (Environmental Management Standards), ISO50001 (Energy Management System), ), ISO 55001, (Asset Management System) and OHSAS18000 (Health and Safety Management System) for engineering in the section.
    • Ensure compliance of contractors to all SHEQ policies, procedures, best practices and work instructions by performing walkabouts and inspections as well as checking their safety files.
    • Actively drive the use of plant reliability monitoring techniques to ensure proactive maintenance and eliminate unplanned downtime.
    • Manage equipment uptime through fast response and repairs of plant breakdowns.
    • Monitor frequency and modes of equipment failures, breakdowns, accidents and overtime.
    • Manage projects for equipment renewals and capital projects on time and within budget for a whole plant or machine.
    • Log all activities using the SAP system and use system reports for upwards reporting and monitoring.
    • Participate in thorough and evidence-based Root Cause Analyses in the plant. Call for support from the Lean and/or specialist Engineers for complex cases.
    • Ensure that equipment Quality Control Plans (QCPs) meet Sappi standards and are in place where appropriate. Develop and review QCPs for new equipment and when an RCA identifies a weakness ensuring that all the engineering disciplines are considered.
    • Manage all shut equipment requirements such as labour, spares reservations, scaffold, and crane requirements, etc. to ensure that these resources are available at the start of the shut and that the shut is executed according to objectives and standards.
    • Develop shut plans for monthly, quarterly and annual shuts as required.
    • Participate in the commissioning of new and decommissioning of old equipment within the section according to sound engineering practices for all specific engineering disciplines.
    • Participate to contract negotiations for engineering contracts as a technical specialist.
    • Manage capital projects for equipment on time and within budget.
    • Participate in the maintenance and operational budgeting and forecasting process on an annual basis.
    • Manage overtime in the department within legislative (BCEA) and budgetary requirements whilst ensuring availability of sufficient manpower resources.
    • Negotiates pricing and orders with various suppliers in consultation with the Procurement Department.
    • Monitor the plant's maintenance expenses on a weekly and monthly basis and analyse over or under spend.
    • Prepare daily, weekly and monthly maintenance reports using system and qualitative data.
    • Oversee the recruitment, recognition, performance management, remuneration, development and discipline of the section’s maintenance and production teams.

    What are we looking for? 

    • BSc/BEng/BTech/Advance Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
    • Minimum of 5 to 10 years’ experience as an Electrical/ Mechanical Engineer in a heavy industry/manufacturing environment.   
    • Government Certificate of Competency would be advantageous. (Factories).
    • 5 years’ experience managing multidiscipline maintenance teams in a section/area.
    • MDP or equivalent would be advantageous.

    As a Projects Capital Administrator, you will be responsible for:

    • Capital Administrators play a key role in financial planning related to CAPEX projects.
    • Analyses project proposals, conduct cost-benefit analyses, and assess the financial feasibility of proposed investments.
    • Evaluating potential risks and returns associated with the projects.
    • Responsible for creating and managing budgets specifically earmarked for CAPEX projects.
    • The incumbent allocate resources, including capital funds, to ensure that these projects are adequately financed while staying within the established budget constraints.
    • Throughout the project lifecycle, the incumbent monitors expenditures and control costs to ensure that the project stays within the allocated budget.
    • Track financial performance, compare actual costs against forecasts, and identify any variances.

    • The incumbent should generate and present financial reports specific to CAPEX projects.
    • Reports should outline the financial progress, expenditures, and projected outcomes to stakeholders and management.
    • Ensure compliance with financial regulations and internal policies in all financial aspects of the projects.
    • Maintain and administer all Capital expenditure budgets. By developing in conjunction with the PM, EM and maintaining the 5 year Capital Reference file         
    • Compile or type and edit capital applications as required.   
    • Circulate for approval and maintain tracking of Capital Applications and related approval Status
    • Allocate vote number from renewal control book.
    • Update Business plan reference file.
    • Circulate for approval and maintain tracking of Renewal Applications and related approval Status.
    • Capture and record approved applications and associated budgets
    • Prepare Project month end Management and RHO reports.

    What are we looking for? 

    • Grade 12 with Maths and Physical Science.
    • 2 Years Capital Administrator experience.
    • Microsoft Office Package
    • SAP experience
