    Diamond Future Smart Manager

    Job Description:

    The context of the role is within the strategy and strategy-projects space of the newly formed Technology organisation of De Beers; which will integrate and streamline between De Beers new strategy, Upstream client and project requirements, and technology trends & opportunities; focused on the sustainable provision and delivery of technology to the upstream operations of De Beers Group; which can meet the needs of De Beers and support the delivery of the upstream strategy.

    The purpose of the role is to lead novel strategic upstream technology initiatives to enable the Group to achieve production and cost efficiencies and improvements through technology, and ultimately the transition of De Beers’ operations and projects to Future Smart operations.

    Your role will:

    • Manages budget for area of responsibility.
    • Manage specialised team of direct (and indirect collaborating reports) to enable and execute on Upstream Technology Strategy and associated appropriate technology development pathways
    • Leads and develops the performance of the team in line with Anglo American’s performance management system and company values, in order to achieve objectives.
    • Identifies novel technology initiatives for leading mining/processing/control/operating procedures and methods across De Beers Group upstream
    • Interpret and understand De Beers and Upstream strategy together with Client requirements and opportunities
    • Undertakes analyse, synthesize and modelling of complex scenarios via simple model abstractions to provide insights between technology, operational-context and value to support and inform the De Beers Upstream Technology Strategy
    • Develop long term (H2 & H3) Technology Strategy framework and portfolio options and integrate into overall Upstream Technology Strategy
    • Communicates understanding and insights from analysis to Upstream Technology management to guide and inform Technology Strategy and appropriate technology development pathways
    • Conceptualise solutions and execute initiatives to solve Technology systems requirements to address challenges pertinent to the delivery of a diamond Future smart operation
    • Evaluates current mining/process/sampling sub systems and generate new innovative concepts that will replace current systems.
    • Executes technology development plans in a manner that seeks to maximise the synergy between functions producing consistent Technology deliverables.

    Qualifications:

    Formal qualifications:

    • 4yr Bachelors/Honours level degree (or equivalent with engineering sciences preferred)

    Additional requirements:

    • Minimum of 12 years’ relevant mining/processing/extractive industry experience
    • Minimum of 5 years in Technology Development
    • Experience and proven track record in upstream mining and/or processing related technical and/or economic evaluation
    • Experience and proven track record in technology scanning, technology development, innovation pathways and knowledge sharing.
    • Intermediate computer simulation/modelling experience
    • Intermediate to advanced experience in financial evaluation and commercial principles
    • Experience and proven track record with technology development pathways, and associated schedules and risks

    Experience in simulation/modelling of techno-economic scenarios including expert use of MS Excel for simulation or other modelling tool where appropriate

    • Sound knowledge and experience in typical upstream mining value-chain (with sound knowledge and experience in various upstream technology systems or components a distinct advantage)
    • Skill/experience in assimilating knowledge gained into appropriate reports/databases, and dissemination of insights/technology through technical reports and presentations.
    • Prioritise and structure own work & effectively manages own time in a largely unstructured role

    Mechanical Artisan

    Job Description:

    Current and anticipated future workload within the De Beers Technologies, Manufacturing team, necessitates for a need to employ a young and dynamic mechanical artisan to assist in mechanical assembly of De Beers Technologies products to expected safety and quality standards.

    Due to the small nature of the manufacturing team, the prospective incumbent is required to carry out additional related tasks. 

    The requisite skills sought for this position is the ability to read, interpret, assemble, and integrate mechanical and pneumatic circuits and other related activitiesto deliver quality products. Knowledge and skill in using basic to intermediate mechanical tools is a must. 

    Your role will:

    • Perform trade related assembly, maintenance, and repair of mechanical aspects of equipment and parts according to maintenance requirements, 
    • Read, interpret, and assemble trade specific items according to design diagrams and drawings, 
    • Agility to adapt to changing production schedules and priorities, 
    • Propose design improvements and best practices in mechanical assembly methods and processes, for a more efficient manufacturing process, 
    • Contribute towards improvements in assembly procedures and safe work procedures/instructions.
    • Ensure compliance with Company policies and procedures, Ensure adherence to Health, Safety and Environmental procedures and legal requirements

    Qualifications:

    Formal qualifications and experience:

    • N6 or National Diploma Mechanical Engineering qualification. A mechanical trade certificate will be highly recommended 
    • 5 year’s or more in post qualification experience
    • Experience in a manufacturing environment would be advantageous
    • Computer literate in the Microsoft suite of packages 
    • Effective communication skills in English (written and verbal)

    Additional requirements:

    • Valid Code 08/EB Driver’s License will be advantageous.

    Role-specific knowledge:

    • Understanding of a mechanical artisan trade requirements, standards, and concepts
    • Ability to plan and organize work
    • Adaptive to continuously changing work priorities
    • Flexible with the ability to work with different professionals on multiple/varied tasks 
    • Assembly knowledge De Beers Technologies upstream products would be advantageous 
    • Ability to work within a team – maintains and nurtures good working relationships
    • Understand and satisfy internal customer requirements
    • Raise production related problems and provide assembly progress updates to management.
