    Chief Human Resource Officer

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Formulation of strategic plan for Human Resources Management.
    • Research on, and/or to keep abreast of, the latest developments in relevant legislation, labour law, rules and trends in labour relations and human resources management practices.
    • Ensure effective implementation and monitoring of the KwaZulu-Natal Museum's recruitment policies and practices.
    • Ensure that the recruitment policies are compliant with the relevant legislation and that constant reviews are
    • proposed to improve the effectiveness of the recruitment policies.
    • Ensuring efficient management and risk management of the remuneration and benefits function.
    • Properly managing conflict and ensuring minimisation of labour relations related issues, creating a conducive work environment for staff.

    • Ensure overall effective and efficient management of human resources at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum.

    REQUIREMENTS: 

    • A Bachelor's degree or National Diploma (NQF 6 rated) in Labour Relations/Human Resources
    • Management/Law. At least 3 to 5 years relevant experience. Knowledge of the Cultural Institutions Act and the National instruments & legislation pertaining to human resources management with specific reference to the Public Service
    • Amendment Act and Public Service Regulations; Labour Relations Act as well as other relevant labour relations prescripts.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills. Proven computer literacy in MS Office. Conflict resolution skills.
    • Planning and organising skills. Monitoring, evaluation and reporting skills. Valid driver's license (Code B).

    Chief Librarian

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Collection Development: Through acquiring new items (i.e. books, journals, etc.).
    • Preservation of Collections: Ensure that collections are kept under suitable conditions. Continuously observe the condition of collections and ensuring that necessary intervention occurs. Develop disaster management plan for the library.
    • Staff Management and Development: Training of library staff. Arranging external training programmes when necessary. Compilation of procedures manuals.
    • User Training: Ensure that users are able to utilise library services (e.g. searching facilities).
    • Record and Organise Information: Accessioning, Cataloguing, Classification, and Subject Indexing.
    • Library Promotion: Conduct behind the scenes tours. Produce and update information pamphlets. Compilation of library web pages.
    • Library Computer Systems Management: Approval on hardware and software upgrades and purchases.
    • Organisation and maintenance of Sabinet link. Updating of library systems (e.g. ReQuest, Ariel, etc.)

    Requirements: 

    • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information studies. An Honours qualification will serve as an advantage. Computer literacy and good understanding of budgetary processes and basic aspects of financial management are also required.
    • Other skills include planning and project management, initiative and innovative thinking, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. Good writing, presentation, communication and organising skills. Valid driver's license (Code B).

    Research Technician: Mollusc Collections

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Augment and maintain mollusc collections.
    • Respond to loan requests and manage loans.
    • Assess needs of the Department of Natural Sciences (DNS) and assist with the development of annual budget.
    • Procure curatorial materials.
    • Assist curatorial staff with field research.
    • Maintain exhibits mounted by DNS.
    • Assist with training and supervision of DNS assistants.
    • Assist DNS and visiting researchers.
    • Assist with DNS and Museum outreach programmes.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Minimum of Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology or related natural sciences field.
    • A valid driver’s license (minimum Code B).
    • Knowledge of relevant collection management procedures, and protocols of curation.
    • A good working knowledge of zoological diversity and classification, particularly relating to the molluscs of southern Africa.
    • Experience in zoological collection management, collections database software and working with molluscs would be an advantage.

    Education Officer

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Museum Education:

    • Develop and implement appropriate museum-based educational programmes, utilizing objects and audio-visual resources for General Education & Training and Further Education & Training learners, tertiary students and educators, in line with the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS).
    • Conduct after-school programmes to help redress the educational imbalance in previously disadvantaged communities: (Inhouse).
    • Carry responsibility for developing, running and administering museum after school programmes (such as the Sabalala Nolwazi Youth Club).
    • Develop new audiences (customers): Develop holiday and other in-house craft, art, skills and knowledge-based
    • programmes to stimulate and develop activity-based learning to gain new audiences.
    • Develop and promote the use of technology to supplement formal educational programmes.
    • Work with other institutions: Share skills, resources and materials with other institutions to more effectively promote cultural and natural heritage education.
    • Collaborate with other Museum departments to promote the mission of the Museum.
    • Departmental administration: Assist the Head of Department in preparing departmental budget and in compiling relevant reports.
    • Assist with gallery guiding and support Information Officers.
    • Keep up with the evolving methods in museum-based education through reading and participating in conferences and workshops.
    • Assist with special activities, workshops and other outdoor activities.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Education or similar field, NQF Level 7 qualification, coupled with relevant experience.
    • Further training in cultural or natural history/heritage will serve as an advantage. Understanding of the national CAPS policy.
    • Understanding of museum education and use of its resources. Lesson planning and presentation skills.
    • Computer literacy, good writing, communication and organizing skills. Valid driver’s license (minimum Code B).

    Information Officer

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide visitors with relevant information about the Museum, its displays and any relevant tourist information as required.
    • Provide Museum visitors with floor plan and inform them about available facilities.
    • Monitor security in the public areas of the Museum: check alarm and report faults in the alarm system, advise visitors about what to do in cases of emergency.
    • Report maintenance work needed, such as blocked toilets, etc.
    • Attend courses to gain knowledge of local tourism-related topics to improve customer satisfaction.
    • Admin duties: receive admission fees from visitors and school groups, responsible for sales in the Museum shop, keep records of shop stock and sales, and keep statistics of visitor numbers.
    • Museum education: Assist Education Officers in developing school programmes and conduct guided tours for the schools.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • National diploma in Tourism, Cultural History or Nature Conservation.
    • At least one year work experience in the tourism or heritage sector.
    • Further training in hospitality, Customer care and tour guiding will be an added advantage.

    Technical Officer: Technical

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Maintenance and repairs on Museum infrastructure (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, welding, metalwork).
    • Technical support to other departments.
    • Manage technical workshop - ensure it is organized and safe to use.
    • Assist with implementation of health and safety procedures and compliance with the Health and Safety Act.
    • Liaise with contractors, Department of Public Works & Infrastructure (DPWI) and other stakeholders as required.
    • Work after hours for events, functions and when necessary.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Matric. Minimum 5 years’ experience in a technical environment (maintenance, facilities, or similar).
    • Carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, welding, and metal work experience.

    Maintenance Officer: Cleaning X 3

    • The purpose of this position is to ensure that Museum facilities are properly cleaned, to maintain hygiene and to provide relevant general and semi-skilled services.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Ensure cleanliness of Museum facilities.
    • Continuous and regular monitoring of facilities and attend to relevant issues.
    • Provide general and semi-skilled services regarding maintenance of the Museum.
    • Undertake other relevant maintenance tasks that relate to the work of the Technical Department.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Matric. Ability to communicate in basic English and IsiZulu.
    • An interest and the ability to undertake training to increase general knowledge of varying aspects of the job.
    • Possession of specialist heritage conservation cleaning skills will be advantageous, but is not a requirement.
    • Awareness of relevant health and safety procedures and the ability to work both alone and in a team is required.

    Finance And Projects Officer

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Develop accounting practices that respond to policies and procedures that comply with the requirements of the Public
    • Finance Management Act, Act 1 of 1999; the Generally Recognised Accounting Standards; the Government
    • Immovable Asset Management Act, Act 19 of 2007 and Treasury Regulations as promulgated from time to time.
    • Develop a comprehensive organisational infrastructure budget, including the mid-term budget, and implement sound financial management systems that align to the overall Museum budget.
    • Provide financial management support i.r.o. budget planning and reporting that include infrastructure projects.
    • Promote adherence to relevant legislation, policies and implementation thereof.
    • Support the Finance and Administration Department in the preparation of Annual Financial Statements in line with the GRAP reporting framework and PFMA.
    • Ensure the implementation of the Heritage Assets Management Policy as well as accounting and disclosure procedure.
    • Provide technical accounting support on GRAP 103: Heritage Assets with regards to the preparation of Annual
    • Financial Statements as well as interim financial reports.
    • Provide project management services to ensure successful implementation of ad-hoc projects.
    • Monitor and evaluate SCM processes and report on compliance with SCM guidelines, framework and accounting standards.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • BCom or B Accounting / Diploma in Financial Management.
    • At least 5 to 10 years' experience in a project management role.
    • Knowledge of GRAP, Treasury Regulations, PFMA and Accounting Systems.
    • Experience in the development of strategic plans, budgeting and preparation of AFS.
    • Understanding of government reporting framework and deadlines.

    Administrative Support Officer

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assist with the administration work of the Director and Deputy Director.
    • Ensure proper planning and communication documents between Museum Council, Council committees and the Director.
    • General administrative tasks: assist Director's PA & Council Secretary with creation and maintenance of an electronic archival database of official documents; assist Human Resources Division in maintaining updated records of HR related transactions to ensure statutory compliance.
    • Assist Human Resources Division with relevant periodical reporting related to the learning and development activity.
    • Provide clerical assistance in the performance management and development system for the institution.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • NQF level 6 office administration or other equivalent qualification.     Communication Officer

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Museum’s communication and digital marketing strategies.
    • Create high-quality content for the Museum’s platforms - including writing articles, producing short videos and developing posts for the website, social media and print material.
    • Plan, compile and manage a monthly social media content calendar.
    • Liaise with internal departments to gather information and communicate exhibitions, research, education programmes and events accurately.
    • Coordinate communication, and reporting related to the Functions Committee.
    • Assist with photographing and documenting Museum events for use across social media, the website, newsletters and promotional material.
    • Support marketing and communication outreach initiatives, including planning, coordination and promotion of public programmes and events.
    • Assist with media liaison, including drafting media releases and responding to media enquiries when required.
    • Monitor media coverage and digital engagement, and compile basic reports as required.
    • Provide general communication and marketing support to the Marketing Division as required.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • A minimum of a National Diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field is required, along with at least three (3) years relevant experience.
    • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt content for different audiences and platforms.
    • Experience managing social media platforms and digital content.
    • Photography and video content creation skills. Good organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and  deadlines.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
    • Computer literacy, including content management systems and design tools.
    • An interest in heritage, museums, culture or the public sector will be an advantage. A valid driver's license (Code B).

    Heritage Symbols & Cultural History Assistant

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Develop poetry pieces based on Museum displays.
    • Develop poetry pieces for relevant Museum programmes.
    • Conduct poetry classes for Sabalala Nolwazi classes and outreach.
    • Document oral expressions based on Museum displays.
    • Conduct poetry sessions during Museum outreach programmes.
    • Incorporate oral heritage in the interpretation of Museum displays for schools and public consumption.
    • Conduct classes for schools and the public.
    • Use storytelling as a teaching tool to pass on important information.
    • Conduct storytelling during holiday programmes.
    • Advise on indigenous artefacts that could be used to market the Museum.
    • Advise on how indigenous artefacts could be used to promote heritage and social cohesion.
    • Interact with the visitors and providing relevant information.
    • Undertake other related tasks as required by supervisor/ HOD.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • A minimum of a Tour guiding or other relevant qualification rated at NQF Level 5.
    • A valid driver's license (Code B).
    • Other training in the relevant Museum or Museum related environment will be an added advantage.
    • Working experience in the relevant field will be an added advantage.
