    Director (Professor)

    • The Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine was established in 2004 as a cross-faculty postgraduate research institute based within the University of Cape Town (UCT). The IDM is a pioneering research institute with significant global reach. It has successfully brought biomedical and clinical research together in a synergistic relationship. It is physically and administratively located within the Faculty of Health Sciences. The IDM vision is to be an international centre of excellence where world-class scientists work together to tackle diseases of major importance in Africa. 

    Their mission is:

    • To conduct basic, clinical, and public health research that is leading-edge and relevant to the needs of African people
    • To develop indigenous scientific capacity in the biomedical sciences
    • To influence health policy and practise by translating scientific discoveries and applying them in our communities
    • To build partnerships with other research centres in South Africa and elsewhere The IDM conducts research at the laboratory-clinic-community interface by engaging a wide range of scientific and clinical disciplines. Collaborative research is an important focus for the IDM, with collaborators being based at 67 South African institutions, 85 African institutions in 20 African countries, and 319 institutions in 35 countries internationally. The IDM also has links to other institutions through 35 research consortia and 26 industrial partners.
    • The Director of the IDM is responsible to the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences for the work of the IDM and the financial management thereof and is required to submit annual budgets to the Dean, and to report quarterly on performance against budgets to the Dean. The IDM Director must report on the scientific activities of the IDM to the International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAC) and seek its advice and must account to the Governing Board for the work of the Institute and keep the Governing Board informed on the financial position of the IDM.
    • For this position we seek a dynamic and innovative leader who shows evidence of collaborative leadership in complex and adaptive research environments both locally and globally.     Requirements for the job:

    • A PhD in a relevant field OR a clinical qualification with a substantial research record.
    • Evidence of a global standing within biomedical science.
    • Clear demonstration of outstanding research leadership with an active research enterprise in one of the IDM core areas of strength.
    • A track record of a capacity for fund raising and innovative partnership development.
    • Appropriate experience within the research landscape which demonstrates astute management and visionary leadership.
    • Evidence of a role in regional and continental research networks.
    • A demonstrable commitment to transformative leadership in equity, diversity and inclusion processes across different environments.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide scientific strategic leadership for the IDM which builds on the current strengths and creates innovative approaches to its work.
    • Lead an active, well-funded, personal research program in the IDM in one or more of the Institute’s focal areas and meet the requirements for appointment as a Full Member.
    • Responsible for day-to-day running of the IDM as chair of Exco. This entails direct line management of the IDM’s Research Enterprise Manager, the H&S, Biosafety & Facilities Manager, and Programme Coordinator.
    • Responsible for financial management of the IDM.
    • Build and maintain an inclusive research culture which ensures development of researchers through support of members, postdocs, postgraduate students in their career development.

    Medical Officer

    The University of Cape Town Lung Institute requires applications for a MEDICAL OFFICER* on a Fixed Term Contract in the
    Centre for Child and Adolescent Lung Health Unit (CHILD), based.

    • The Centre for Child and Adolescent Lung Health Unit aims to foster a strong clinical transactional research group in the area of priority childhood respiratory illnesses in Africa.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • MBChB
    • Registered as an independent medical practitioner with the HPCSA (Health Professional Council of South Africa)
    • Experience with Paediatric HIV and Tuberculosis
    • Experience working on medical research studies
    • Previous experience with clinical trials would be advantageous
    • Valid GCP Certificate
    • Intermediate computer skills including using Microsoft Office, internet browsers and medical databases.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Able to work autonomously

    Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

    • Clinical management of study participants
    • Initiating patients on TB treatment when required
    • Clinical follow-up of patients to establish well documented clinical outcomes
    • Management of lab results including referrals
    • Operationalise and plan clinical processes at site to ensure procedures are completed per study protocols and to ensure a
    • high quality of study clinical data collection
    • Oversee and manage the clinical team at site
    • Ensure that all study participants are assessed according to protocol requirements
    • Monitoring clinical health of participants in the study (per study visit requirements)
    • Safety reporting linked to adverse events, serious unexpected events, adverse events of special interest & serious adverse
    • events to study sponsor and safety monitoring board.
    • Compiling monthly statistics as needed for operational reporting and investigators
    • Responsible for quality control processes at site
    • Responsible for resolving clinical queries raised by study monitor or data team
    • Data quality control (including) of case report forms
    • Contribute to academic outputs, such as data analysis, conference presentations, and prepare and write manuscripts for
    • publication in peer-reviewed journals

    IT Business Analyst

    Key Performance Areas (KPA’s) include:

    • Requirements elicitation; requirements documentation (incl. BRS, FRS and detailed business cases); solution design and feasibility; stakeholder management; quality assurance / testing; change management (incl. stakeholder analysis, readiness assessments, communications); project management (incl. assisting with project charters, project planning and estimation, and providing BA support through the project lifecycle and SDLC); continual improvement.

    Requirements for the job:

    • An Information Technology, Information Systems or related Business qualification at a minimum NQF-6 level (i.e. Diploma or Advanced Certificate) PLUS at least 5 years of relevant IT Business Analysis experience in IT projects, in an Enterprise (large, complex) IT environment.
    • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand complex business processes and translate them into technical solutions.
    • Proficiency in documenting business requirements and functional specifications.
    • Proficiency in developing detailed business cases.
    • Proficiency in business analysis tools and methodologies.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and interact effectively with diverse stakeholders of varying technical backgrounds.
    • Thorough knowledge and experience in supporting the project management lifecycle and the software development lifecycle (SDLC) process.
    • Experience in data modelling, process mapping, and system design concepts.
    • Good organising and time management skills with an ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise activities to meet deadlines.
    • Good work ethic, the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team and to assist with mentoring junior team members.
    • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.

    Key Performance Areas (KPA’s) include:

    • Stakeholder engagement; information gathering / requirements elicitation; assisting with requirements documentation (BRS, FRS and business cases); evaluation of existing systems and processes to identify gaps for process improvement; assisting with the design and documentation of business processes, workflows and system requirements; assisting with solution design (incl. collaboration with development and technical teams); support the quality assurance / testing process by creating test cases, conducting tests, documenting results and assisting with user acceptance testing (UAT); assisting with change management (incl. creation of training materials, user guides and end-user support documentation); providing BA assistance through the project lifecycle and SDLC. 

    Requirements for the job:

    • An Information Technology, Information Systems or related Business qualification at a minimum NQF-6 level (i.e. Diploma or Advanced Certificate) PLUS at least 3 years of demonstrated IT Business Analysis experience in IT projects.
    • Proficiency in documenting business requirements, functional specifications, and process flows.
    • Familiarity with business analysis methodologies, tools, and techniques.
    • A good understanding of project management and the software development lifecycle.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and interact effectively with diverse stakeholders of varying technical backgrounds.
    • Good organising and time management skills with an ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise activities to meet deadlines.
    • Good work ethic and the ability to effectively work independently and collaboratively in a team.
    • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.
    • The following are advantageous but not essential:
    • Experience in South Africa's public Higher Education sector;
    • An industry-recognised certification in Business Analysis
    • An industry-recognised certification in Project Management.
