    Laboratory Technician

    Description

    • The main purpose of this position is to ensure that all equipment is functioning as per the design and purpose as well as ensuring good turnaround times, equipment availability and support to the Quality department. This is done through a proper maintenance program supported by maintenance schedules.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Ensure compliance with Quality Laboratory Services Health and Safety responsibilities, legal and operational requirements
    • Identify hazards and risk while performing daily tasks and take preventative measures
    • Comply with provided systems, practices, methods, standards, and procedures of the job
    • Conduct visual inspections of the work area to ensure workplace safety and good housekeeping
    • Provide technical assistance and resolution when electrical or mechanical problems are encountered during shifts.
    • Set up, Operate and test equipment to evaluate performance of developmental parts, assemblies, or systems under simulated operating conditions, after installation, servicing or breakdown and record results.
    • Install, repair and maintain plant equipment to ensure equipment availability
    • Collaborate with Laboratory Manager and electrical experts to identify, define, and solve developmental and critical problems.
    • Assist with commissioning procedures for electrical and/or mechanical installations
    • Assist with engineering proposals, shop drawings and design comments for sound electrical engineering practice and conformance with established safety and design criteria and recommend approval or disapproval.
    • Calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical instruments or testing equipment
    • Analyse and interpret test information to resolve design-related problems
    • Conduct inspections for quality control and assurance programs, reporting findings and recommendations to the Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Supervisor
    • Responsible to log incidents regarding failure of equipment
    • Test the robotic laboratory after service and maintenance.

    Qualification Requirements

    • Matric (Grade 12) or an equivalent qualification registered at NQF Level 4, including relevant NATED qualifications such as the N3 Certificate.
    • Preferably a Millwright qualification or any relevant N6 qualification within the engineering field or -
    • Minimum of 10 years proven experience within the engineering field.
    • Valid driver’s licence code B, EB or C1 would be advantageous.
    • Experience and Skills Requirements
    • Experience in a multifunctional laboratory and/or production environment
    • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology.
    • Knowledge of electrical / mechanical drawings and parts
    • Knowledge of production processes, quality control and other techniques for maximizing the effective operation of the laboratory.
    • Attention to detail, planning and organizing, self-motivated and being a team player.
    • Operating a Robotic Laboratory to perform analyses.
    • Working 12 hours Shifts.
    • Computer literate
    • English language proficiency
    • Time management

    Laboratory Analyst

    Description

    • This position is responsible for effective sample analysis using analytical procedures according to Client needs and ISO/IEC 17025 Standards

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Ensure compliance with Quality Laboratory Services Health and Safety responsibilities, legal and operational requirements
    • Identify hazards and risk while performing daily tasks and take preventative measures
    • Comply with provided systems, practices, methods, standards, and procedures of the job
    • Conduct visual inspections of the work area to ensure workplace safety and good housekeeping
    • Ensure that the correct chemical control measures are followed at all times
    • Monitor lab equipment functionality in the section to ensure adherence to production parameters
    • Ensure the adherence to handling of sample procedures from the point where the sample comes into the lab up to the point where it leaves the lab
    • Registration of samples on the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and reporting of results on LIMS
    • Analyse all routine plant samples and special samples received from Clients
    • Ensure that any special test work requested by the Client or Line Management is conducted according to the specifications
    • Ensure that all test reports are distributed to the relevant sections as required
    • Ensure that all test work is conducted according to the quality requirements to ensure accurate results to Clients
    • Ensure that all non-conforming work is reported to the Laboratory/Quality Supervisor
    • Ensure adherence to ISO and legislative standards / requirements
    • Effectively managing time and resources to ensure that work is completed efficiently within the given deadlines
    • On-the-job training of new personnel on new and existing lab procedures and monitor and ensure the continuous adherence thereto

    Qualification Requirements

    • A three-year Degree or Diploma in Analytical Chemistry is required or any relevant Diploma within the Chemistry field.

    Experience and Skills Requirements

    • Minimum 3 years’ experience in an analytical laboratory together with experience in chemical analysis
    • Knowledge of Laboratory Equipment (ICP-OES, XRF, Leco, potentiometric titrators etc.) and other mineral assays as required
    • Knowledge of Wet Chemistry Techniques, Chromium and Base Metal Analysis.
    • Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods
    • Working 12 – hours shift as per rooster when required operationally
    • Time management
    • English language proficiency
    • Computer literate in MS Office
    • Valid driver’s license code B, EB or C1
