    Business Team Manager - Blending & Shipping

    Job Summary 

    The Operations Leader is directly responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the entire operating area. The position is also responsible for the supervision of the day and shift teams, which include Union and non-Union employees, and should work closely with them setting key objectives, PMP's and providing leadership and guidance to ensure results are achieved.

    The Operations Leader will manage the operating area assets and ensure the key safety, reliability and operating targets are achieved. The Operations Leader will work closely with the two other Operations Leaders at Cape Town Refinery to ensure consistency across the day and shift teams. The role will promote the OMS model and ensure OE is used as part of base business and is responsible for reviewing the operation on a monthly basis and communicating the developed KPI's to the relevant departments.

    Accountable for delivering all Business Objectives for their assigned area - SSHE, Reliability, Margin, Cost, Controls, Compliance and Continuous improvement.

    • Accountable for the effectiveness of the Business Team - teamwork and alignment with Functional organizations providing resources and functional excellence
    • Accountable for alignment and interfaces between operating units
    • Accountable for Operations Functional excellence from the Operations Specialist and Shift organization
    • Responsible for the overall performance of each operating area to achieve an incident and injury free workplace.  Establishes performance metrics and monitors progress in each operating area.
    • Give strategic direction, deploy resources and coordinate relationships with the area operations team to ensure the plant is fully optimised and operating to plan. Liaise with the Technical Services Department to underpin longer term planning and troubleshooting capability.
    • Defines obstacles to operating with excellence and utilizes resources within the operating area to remove these obstacles. Where obstacles exist that are beyond the capabilities of the operating area the Ops Team Leader will be responsible for obtaining resources to remove the obstacles.
    • Support the area operations team in agreeing priorities and alignment with the Maintenance team. Manage resources to ensure plant integrity is maintained and statutory/legislative requirements are fully met.
    • Define performance expectations for operating area employees and hold them accountable for their performance through the Performance Management Process. 
    • Coaches and mentors operating area employees involved with operations, routine maintenance, and daily plant support. This includes Union and non-Union employees. Assumes overall responsibility for the development of all operating area employees.  Partners with the Learning & Development Group on human performance issues e.g. training and development.  Ensure integration of environmental and Process Safety Management (PSM) compliance issues with daily activities.  
    • Maintain strategic manning plans to ensure the required numbers of people and skills are available when required to support the business needs. Link these with succession planning and technical career ladder activities.

    As Control Executor,

    • Owns individual Critical Controls types
    • Is accountable for
    • Execution of a specific tasks related to Critical Controls
    • Reviewing and signing-off on Critical Controls quarterly report data accuracy
    • Verifies Critical Controls effectiveness on sample basis

    Minimum Qualification and Experience Required:

    Professional Qualification and Certifications: Bachelor of Engineering ( Any discipline)

    Work Experience: 5-10 years manufacturing environment experience with a strong technical background.

    Shift Team Lead (STL) - Milnerton

    Job Summary 

    Responsible for the safe, reliable, efficient and incident free operation of the process units on the refinery area to meet the requirements of the operating plan. Responsible for staffing and ensuring staff are provided with the appropriate tools and training. Responsible for strategy setting and budget setting and adherence

    The position ensures operations are undertaken in a safe and environmentally sound manner by making sure that routine duties, Pre start-up Safety Reviews (PSSRs), Job Safety Analysis (JSAs), Handhelds, Refinery Process Monitoring (RPM) and procedures are carried out diligently and to the appropriate standard.  Oversee the actions and behaviors of Process controllers (Both Field and console operators) by holding shiftly toolbox talks and reviewing log sheets.

    Ensure Reliable Plant Equipment

    • Ensure that maintenance work is prioritized and undertaken as required. 
    • Foster a culture of equipment maintenance amongst operations, to ensure equipment reliability.
    • Identify equipment deviations through plant surveillance and raise works notifications for R&M to plan and repair.

    Manage People

    • Oversee and supervise the crew. 
    • Motivate, empower, coach and mentor the team.  Develop staff to maximize their potential. 
    • Holds people accountable.  Provide fair and balanced feedback, rewards and consequences. 
    • Develop a culture where staff believes that zero injuries and incidents are possible.

    Communication

    • Communicate all plant changes to relevant people. 
    • Communicate refinery short-range plans to Console Operators. 
    • Ensure focus on critical priorities and the need for business improvements. 

    Manage Quality

    • Ensure that the team takes ownership and responsibility to produce on test products in their operating area at all times. Interface with Oils planning to ensure consistent quality and plans for off-specification product. Do shiftly procedure V&V.

    Manage HES and Emergency Situations

    • Oversee operations to ensure compliance with operating tenets and HES requirements (i.e. safety inspections and management of emergency situations).  Ensure a commitment to improve operational excellence, fluency in OEMS and communication of incident outcomes to prevent recurrence.
    • Steward LPS and ensure learnings shared from LPS tool usage

    Training and Development

    • Ensure optimal training of the crew and effective assessment using various assessment tools (i.e. planned job observations, LPSA).  Ensure training development plans in place for each team member.

    Professional Qualification and Certifications:

    • Minimum: Matric
    • Preferred: Technical Diploma                               

    Work Experience:

    • 1x Console, minimum of 8 years’ experience in the field and on the console OR
    • Equivalent qualification and/or other relevant experience to demonstrate ability to do the job.  

    Knowledge and skills:   

    • Maintained all health, safety and environmental regulations and encouraged others to do the same, effectively reducing work-related injuries.
    • Ensuring facility readiness through proactive housekeeping and monitoring of daily operations.
    • Isolated and prepared equipment for maintenance while following the Lock Out Tag Out procedure.

    • Documented plant information in daily logs.

    Finance Analyst – Refinery Operations

    Job Summary

    This position provides financial analysis and reporting for the Cape Town Refinery as part of the Finance Team. Specifically, the position is responsible for providing Financial/Accounting support to the Operations, Technical Services Department, SHEQ and various other departments (all refinery departments excluding Reliability and Maintenance) as well as the Business Teams Managers. The role is also responsible for providing financial support to the Regen and Turnaround annual events.

    Responsibilities include assisting Refinery leadership team (RLT) and departmental managers with financial information & in-depth analysis of their results to improve decision-making, identifying areas of financial control weakness to be addressed, understanding and explaining to business the effect of business drivers on their financial performance and providing financial advice and guidance to the business unit on business planning for future activity.

    Other than its direct interface with the Refinery operational teams, this position works collaboratively with other refinery finance team members, other departments, and RLT members to continuously identify and improve processes, controls and reporting of financial results for the Cape Town Refinery.

    Financial Perspective

    Management Reporting:

    • Responsible for preparation and distribution of monthly cost centre reporting to cost centre owners
    • Responsible for consolidated monthly Opex reporting to RLT, Business Teams and FP&A department.
    • Presents reporting on Refinery Opex (Actuals and Forecast) at monthly RLT business performance meeting.

    Accounting and Financial reporting

    • Monitoring refinery opex and vendor spend and calculation and processing of monthly refinery opex accruals in SAP
    • Work closely with Regen/TA cost analyst to ensure Regen/TA cost is appropriately accounted for as either Capex/Opex monthly. Post manual journals for Regen/TA accruals as well as journals to correct cost allocation between Capex/Opex where necessary.
    • Ensure Catalyst depreciation and prepayments of catalyst and precious metals (platinum, rhenium) are correctly accounted for in SAP
    • Ensure that all financial transactions are processed accurately and timeously per Astron month-end calendar and Astron Energy accounting policy (IFRS)
    • Provide accounting policy (IFRS) guidance to business units on treatment of opex vs capex. This role is specifically responsible for driving formulation and continuous improvement of accounting policy for Regen and Turnaround events, acting as conduit between Turnaround department and General Accounting and Tax department to ensure the accounting policy is not only IFRS compliant but also as practical and efficient as possible.
    • Ensure monthly account reconciliations for catalyst and precious metals (rhenium, platinum) prepayments are performed on time and that accrued items are timeously cleared from the accruals account
    • Assist and manage audit deliverables for internal and external audits as they relate to the refinery finance team.

    Customer Perspective

    Business planning and Performance Reporting:

    • Coordinate, compile and submit a 4-year consolidated OPEX business plan for various departments.  Ensure the opex business plan is reasonable by facilitating discussions with each department head and challenging their proposed business plan to historical actuals and opex targets set in terms of the Business Improvement Plan (BIP)
    • Perform monthly variance analysis of Opex vs. business plan and prior month forecast and provide commentary on reasons for variances. Continuously engage with the business to understand key drivers for variances and where relevant, perform volume and price variance analysis on variable cost to gain a deeper understanding of root causes for variances to plan and then use that data to course correct the business to meet their business plan targets.
    • Work with the business to identify potential trade-offs within opex budgets to combat headwinds and meet business plan targets.

    Organization Engagement

    • Week 3 Governance meeting (Present OPEX results and target tracking on a business unit level)
    • Monthly Business Team meetings (Present OPEX results and target tracking on a business teams level)
    • Assist Departmental heads and team leads/cost centre owners to facilitate monthly cost review meetings. As custodian of refinery opex ensure that these meetings are happening regularly. Discuss variances and ensure forecast is updated accordingly for EBM – leverage financial acumen to influence business decision-making

    Special Projects

    • Participate in special projects as directed Senior Manager, Refinery Finance. Projects are focused on continuous improvement in the areas of cost (SAP, ARIBA, cost reporting).
    • Deal with Ad-hoc requests from various stakeholders for information on refinery opex spend

    Business Excellence

    Solomon reporting                               

    • Support Finance Analyst – Refinery Reliability and Maintenance in the compilation of bi-annual detailed Solomon study and support internal monthly Solomon reporting where required.

    Minimum qualifications and Experience Required:

    • CA(SA) or CIMA professional qualification
    • Minimum of 3 years accounting experience post academic qualification
    • Strong financial, analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, with ability to work well with a broad spectrum of personnel across the organization and constructively provide guidance within a team environment
    • Prior SAP and ARIBA knowledge will be highly beneficial
