    District Coordinator

    Purpose of Role: 
    The District Coordinator: School-based HIV Prevention and Violence Prevention will be responsible for the coordination and implementation of the South Africa School-based Sexuality and HIV Prevention Education program in Johannesburg – East/Ekurhuleni and uMgungundlovu Districts. Through regular classroom observation, evaluation and feedback, the District Coordinator: School-based HIV Prevention and Violence Prevention will ensure that all trained teachers and school officials are applying lessons learned in the classrooms and across the schools with the objectives of reducing new HIV infections in learners and educators by supporting DBE to implement high quality, evidence-based sexuality, HIV and Violence prevention education programs. S/He will be part of a the FHI 360 Technical team rolling out high quality sexuality and HIV prevention education program through Scripted Lesson Plans training in schools, and will be responsible for overseeing coordination, development, delivery and evaluation of the program and leading a team of Educator Trainers.

    Key Responsibility Areas:
    Project Management

    • Provide overall project management, coordination and support management for the implementation of the School-based Sexuality and HIV Prevention Education program in the District.
    • Engage relevant stakeholders (parents, community leaders, School Governing Bodies and Senior Management Team on Comprehensive Sexuality Education.
    • Organize and conduct SGB and SMT Orientation workshops.

    Training and mentorship

    • Develop and implement a training plan on Scripted Lesson Plans (SLPs) for educators and School Management Teams (SMTs) in the District.
    • Coordinate logistics for program delivery including program resources and ensure these are supplied to Educator Trainers.
    • Support the training of district officials and other education officials to serve as mentors to teachers as they implement Scripted Lessons Plan for Sexuality education and HIV prevention in their schools.
    • Design and support the implementation of a mentoring plan for educators who have been trained on SLPs.

    Layering and referrals

    • Establish a District Stakeholder Forum through the District Support Partner and ISHP
    • Support layering and referrals through the District Stakeholder Forum and other implementing partners working within existing structures under the ISHP program in the District, ensuring referrals to appropriate support for disclosures that arise during the SLP implementation.

    Supervision and performance management

    • Manage Educator Trainers’ performance, and ensuring a supportive working environment, including coordinating regular team meetings and supervision
    • Contribute to and provide inputs of work plans, required project reports, baseline data, tools and indicators for monitoring and evaluation, collection / sharing of lessons learned;
    • Participates in review and interpretation of data analysis for project learning and improvement
    • Participate in Quarterly Data Quality Assessment in the district

    Stakeholder engagement and relationship management

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with provincial and district officials working in education and health sectors
    • Act as the program’s representative as it relates to School-based Sexuality and HIV Prevention Education Activities in the District

             
    Required Experience/Skills:  

    • Bachelor’s Degree or its International Equivalent in Education, Social Sciences; Health, Human Development, or Related Field.
    • 3-5 years’ project management experience in the administration, management and implementation of HIV Prevention Programs including supervision and reporting
    • Experience in the education /public health sector in South Africa, ideally at district level
    • Knowledge on DBE HIV prevention policies and frameworks, including Comprehensive Sexuality Education
    • Strong professional acumen and judgment
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Good problem-solving ability, innovative and show initiative
    • Ability to work in a multi- disciplinary team with diverse backgrounds
    • Good communication skills, both oral and written
    • Computer literate with experience using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
    • Fluency in English required, fluency in other South African languages desired
    • Valid South African driver’s licence
    • Eligibility to work in South Africa

    Travel

    • As per need to support Educator Trainers
    • Attend District and Provincial review meetings

    Educator Trainer

    Key Responsibilities:
    Under overall guidance of the District Coordinator, the Educator Trainer/s will work with FHI 360 District Coordinators to provide training to teachers and district education officials who will be implementing the Comprehensive Sexuality Education activities in the Education Districts, Circuit Management Committee and at the School level. The incumbent will also responsible for the development and implementation of a mentoring and support plan for teachers trained on the scripted lesson plans. The Educator Trainer is expected to compile training, support and implementation reports demonstrating; progress on the implementation of the CSE, challenges experienced and mitigation strategies.

    To this end, the Educator Trainer/s will be expected to:
    Work with the CDS Technical Team to plan and organize trainings on CSE program for the Life Orientation Subject Educators Facilitate and coordinate the distribution of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education Learner and Teacher Support Material (LTSM). Facilitate three and half day training for Life Orientation Educators on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) Scripted Lesson Plans (SLPs) implementation in Grade 4,5,6,7, 8, 9,10,11 and 12. (4 x LO educators will be trained for each primary school and 5 x for each secondary school). Design and implement a mentoring and support plan for the teachers who participate in the Sexuality Education training. Support the facilitation of the one-day orientation for School Governing Bodies on comprehensive Sexuality and HIV Prevention Education. Support the facilitation of the one-day orientation for the School Senior Management Teams (School Principal + Head of Department / Subject Advisor Facilitate presentation in School Meetings for schools for parents on comprehensive Sexuality and HIV Prevention Education. Support the facilitation of the two-day mentoring and coaching training for Head of Department / Subject Advisor on comprehensive Sexuality and HIV Prevention Education. Facilitate the implementation of CSE activities through mentoring and coaching of Life Orientation Educators. This will be done during daily visits to implementing schools. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with district and sub-district officials working in education, social development and health departments, facility managers; PEPFAR District Support Partners, the Integrated School Health Programme (ISHP) and other Non-Governmental organizations to facilitate provision of health services in schools, referrals, layering and linkages to improve access to SRH, health and social services. Compile and submit detailed report and attendance registers on each of the training and mentoring activities conducted. Confirm Learner enrolment in implementing schools and collect monthly data to track implementation targets. Ensure routine reporting of confirmed linkages from schools to other programs such as SRH, VMMC, Care & Treatment and other prevention programmes. Participate in Routine Data Quality assessment and interpretation of data analysis for project learning and improvement. Represents FHI360 at school meetings, workshops, health campaigns or other events. Performs other duties as required

    Qualifications and Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or recognised Post Graduate Diploma in Education with 3 - 5 years’ relevant experience
    • Registration with South African Council for Educators (SACE) is required
    • Experience in training Educators in Comprehensive Sexuality Education and/or HIV prevention education; and/or training of communities in health and HIV prevention will be beneficial
    • Knowledge on DBE HIV prevention policies and frameworks, including Sexuality Education
    • Ability to deliver specified curriculum
    • Excellent presentation skills
    • Strong professional acumen and judgment
    • Computer literate with experience using MS Word, Excel, and Power Point
    • Fluency in English required, fluency in other South African languages relevant to the locality of the schools desired
