    Linux Engineer

    Job description

    Job Purpose

    The purpose of this job is to conceptualise, design and guide the implementation of JSE Unix/Linux or virtualised windows compute platform infrastructure storage and provide 3rd level escalation support ensuring JSE’s current-state and future-state databases and data infrastructure technology solutions and innovations meet the standards of a world class tier 1 stock exchange in performance and supportability and can be delivered at price points that enable the JSE to offer competitive services in terms of cost, speed, reliability and related ease of market access for the clients.

    Qualification and Experience Required:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems or related discipline, or equivalent education and experience
    • 7 years’ experience in IT Industry specifically engineering and solution design, storage and network virtualisation technologies Experience in designing, deploying, operating and supporting elements of a virtualised compute platform (Hypervisors, Storage and Networking, DNS, IP, Load Balancing, Active Directory)

    Responsibilities:

    • Contribute to crafting of the infrastructure architectural strategy to ensure delivery of focus areas for the year , ensuring JSE compute capacity needs meet existing and future requirements
    • Maintain the health and maximise the performance of JSE operating systems to prevent outages resulting in financial losses for JSE/Clients/Markets by monitoring performance; troubleshooting network problems and outages
    • Apply cost effective principles when designing a challenging/complex network solution taking cognizance of financial resources available to ensure budget compliance
    • Understand JSE current and future network requirements to ensure compliance and compatibility to minimise/eliminate outages
    • Provide input into the formalisation for the divisional budget
    • Effectively manage monetary and resource budget within a project environment to avoid/minimise overextension of budget
    • Provide specialist and well researched input into the formalisation for the divisional budget
    • Build and maintain relationships with the design team, members of own discipline and others enabling knowledge sharing, effective team work and knowledge of entire JSE IT Infrastructure landscape
    • Build strategic JSE / Industry/ Global network of thought leaders and relationships utilising social media, attending and presenting at conferences and training interventions
    • Leverage supplier networks to improve and enhance technical knowledge and understand their strategic direction to enable alignment of JSE systems offerings to facilitate forward planning incorporating latest available technology
    • Foster sound working relationships with engineers in the other infrastructure disciplines and application solution architects to ensure appropriately integrated infrastructure solutions are developed Collaborate with subject matter experts on critical IT projects to ensure that compute issues are addressed throughout the project lifecycle
    • Manage own delivery against department delivery plan and set timelines, identify obstacles to delivery and take appropriate action where required
    • Provide systems engineering support including installation and configuration, troubleshooting and maintenance of virtual data centre infrastructure solutions.
    • Ensure that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values
    • Plan, build, deploy and maintain virtual infrastructure environments including server, storage and network
    • Provide 3rd level escalation support for the Compute and Storage Platforms teams
    • Mitigate financial and reputational risks by continually evaluating, analysing and troubleshooting scenarios and embedding resiliency, security controls and failover controls into designs
    • Ensure own outputs are aligned to deliver on Enterprise Architecture strategy and SLAs
    • Understand the complexity of the JSE eco system and various dependencies and interdependencies when applying technology solutions
    • Contribute to the infrastructural architectural strategy, including technology standardisation, modernisation and roadmaps of enterprise, data centre and disaster recovery compute and storage infrastructure platforms.
    • Overcome challenges by applying knowledge gained from previous experience, networking within various research/specialist groups and self-learning
    • Write and document functional requirements/specifications documents and standard operating procedures as well as train tier 2 technical support
    • Correlate all planning and delivery results to the IT infrastructure roadmap
    • Research new technology systems and enterprise information technology systems with reduced operator/ hardware cost, improved flexibility in resource allocation, reduced system reconfiguration time, and improved security
    • Perform compute modelling, analysis and planning - develop and deploy methodologies for testing compute performance and providing compute performance statistics and reports (POC) proof of concept modelling
    • Lead compute infrastructure projects to design and engineer large scale implementations to ensure delivery
    • Design and implement short/long term strategic plans to ensure compute capacity meets existing and future requirements
    • Play an advisory role to all stakeholders (vendors/suppliers/clients/JSE internal clients) on technical inputs to enhance JSE systems

    Job description

    Job Purpose

    The purpose of this role is to maximise business value (including optimisation of ROI) through representing the voice of the customer and acting as an ambassdaor for valuations thereby ensuring the right products are delivered to customers (internal and external) whilst balancing the risk the JSE faces and the need to be business enabling.

    Qualification and Experience Required:

    Minimum of 10 years working experience in financial services industry related to valuations or risk management including at least 5 years at a business/product owner level Commerce, -Engineering or Information Technology Degree

    Responsibilities:

    • Ensuring the existence of a shared vision for Valuations and be the champion for realising this vision through the delivery of the right solutions to customers (internal & external)
    • Managing and prioritizing the Product Backlog by making clear decisions in accordance with business value and customer requirements including becoming the lead contributor on obtaining and the understanding of customer requirements
    • Helping the Team Members to understand what to build and why, including clear communication and explanation of customer requirements
    • Accepting the delivered product increment at the end of each iteration according to criteria agreed with customers
    • Managing the release plan
    • Continuous communication to stakeholders and clients regarding progress and managing their expectations including making trade offs where required
    • Maximizing the economic return of the product
    • Play the Product Owner role in Agile development processes as applied at the JSE from time to time.
    • Help organize agile Review Meetings and ensure team effectiveness in the meetings.
    • Attend planning meetings and ensure team effectiveness in the planning.
    • Inspire and motivate a team of diverse specialists to deliver innovative and exciting solutions with an appropriate sense of urgency
    • Identify problems and provide effective solutions to ensure ongoing delivery
    • Work with project managers and technical leads to determine scope and priorities for product development cycles
    • Identify and implement mitigations to effectively manage risks
    • Manage and develop budgets and business cases and ensure continued compliance to targets for ROI and productivity
    • Represent the JSE on relevant committees and industry bodies to drive out related industry standards that align to the JSE vision and strategy
    • Manage partner and vendor relationships including delivery and prioritisation to ensure maximisation of business value
    • Research and keep abreast of industry and regulatory developments and educate customers and stakeholders
    • Ensure solutions are used by customers and that they understand the value proposition
    • Interact with EXCO members, peers, department members, direct reports and manager/s in a way that promotes openness and trust and gives them confidence in one’s intentions
    • Lead, manage and collaborate with cross-functional teams, business partners, customers and stakeholders
    • Build sustainable relationships with customers that engender trust and confidence in JSE products
    • Ensure a solid understanding of customers, users, the market place, the competition, industry developments and of future trends through direct customer engagement
    • Manage stakeholders’ expectations by listening to their needs and influencing the outcome to meet the requirements whilst remaining within system constraints, cost and resource capacity
    • Ensure effective communication and sustainable relationship networks through one-on-one meetings with manager, weekly team meetings and through regular interaction with various internal and external stakeholders
    • Gauge client satisfaction internally through 360 feedback reports and externally through surveys which will include any positive or negative feedback received from the stakeholders regarding the professionalism and timeous nature of interaction
    • Act as an ambassador for valuations solutions
    • Manage partner and vendor relationships
    • Develop appropriately detailed specifications for product features so that they are clearly understood by the various groups of stakeholders e.g. development teams, customers, marketing team, etc.
