    Transport Engineer

    Job description

    Responsibilities

    Engagement in at least three out of the following five traffic and transportation planning disciplines:

    • Traffic impact assessments: Data collection, trip distribution, trip assignment, future year scenario development, capacity analysis develop suitable and commercially aware recommendations.
    • Transport modelling: Data collection, network coding, analysis, matrix development, calibration and validation and forecasting.
    • Transportation master plans: Land use placement and apportionment, trip generation, road hierarchy development, consideration of geometrical constraints, public transport planning and pedestrian planning.
    • Development of access studies and car park planning: Trip generation and distribution, intersection capacity analysis, vehicle queuing and delay analysis, consideration of vehicle specifications, internal car park layout and geometry.
    • Public transport studies: Estimation of public transport demand, consideration of public transport vehicle capacity, appropriate service frequency and optimal location of public transport infrastructure and routing.

    In Addition, The Following Responsibilities As And When Required:

    • Undertake traffic engineering analysis to support Preparation of presentations and reports associated with traffic and transportation studies / traffic modelling work undertaken;
    • Team working and skills development by either attending in house training or attending short courses annually;
    • Explore and apply knowledge and expertise from Arup networks and previous projects;
    • Checking the quality and accuracy of own and others work;
    • Conform with transport impact study, traffic modelling and geometrical standards and adopt standards as required;
    • Be able to use and keep abreast of developments in transportation analysis software and initiate system changes if and when necessary
    • Liaise (through meetings, written and verbal, e-mails etc.) with local, provincial and national authorities, developers, Arup globally and clients;
    • Develop conceptual sketches / drawings to illustrate conceptual planning.

    The Successful Candidate Will Also Require The Ability To:

    • Scope traffic impact studies, write fee proposals and deliver high quality studies;
    • Delegate work activities to other team members;
    • Manage the financial performance of own projects;
    • Actively participate in the transport planning Skills Network;
    • Execute responsibilities in support of the firm’s Quality Management System.

    Requirements

    • Essential: BSc Civil Eng / BSc et Sc (Planning) or equivalent
    • Desirable: MSc / MPhil in Transport Planning or Traffic Engineering
    • 2 Years post qualification experience in at least 2 of the traffic and transportation planning disciplines outlines above
    • Knowledge of at least two of the following Traffic Modelling software packages: SIDRA, SATURN, AIMSUN, EMME2, VISUM, VISSIM, PARAMICS and GIS (e.g. MapInfo)

    • Willingness to take responsibility for aspects of the projects as required
    • A keen desire to improve transport systems and willingness to learn
    • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing results of analyses and modelling
    • Numerically inclined and analytical
    • Be able to think on the feet and to be assertive during negotiations
    • Good at articulating technical issues either verbally or in writing
