Engineer - Technology Technology Information at MTN

JOB DESCRIPTION

• To provide and achieve company-wide innovation in the technology domain through research and development of new technological solutions and high level problem solving within the MTN network.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Task Complexity:

• Present/represent your specific technological research/input in presentations and meetings
• Conduct research and present innovation strategies to the Senior Manager.
• Understand the princilple of research and inniovation and how innovation is translated into practical deliverables
• Prepare and deliver sound and correct reports
• Trial, test and report on technology opportunities (Test and report on technologies that is within 6-12 months of integration)

Planning & Delivery

• Align planning with other functions
• Assist in obtaining Requirements from the Business
• Develop 6-12 months plans and translate innovation into both long term and near term plans
• Ensure that all innovative ideas are in alignment with strategy and roadmap
• Provide support to new radio equipment identification, evaluation and specification
• Be supportive in the innovation of software development
• Identify new software requirements for the Radio Technology department
• Prioritise the development of new applications and tools as required by the Radio Technology department
• Ensure the specification and evaluation of all custom software tools developed
• Ensure that these tools are effective and efficient and maintain relevance and value within the department
• Ensure end to end integration of software tools and systems
• Develop and identify specialised technology support
• Be supportive in the management of key technology development projects within the Radio Technology

Network Optimisation & Performance

• Support Radio Technology with high level problem solving
• Convert technical innovations into topics related to radio network design and performance,
• Ensure the network consistently delivers on customer expectations regarding network quality, coverage and capacity
• Provide appropriate radio network technology capability to achieve business needs
• Ensure effective processes are in place for continuous improvement from the radio department and feedback is in place for confirmation that plans meet objectives.

Technology Competencies

• Competent knowledge of GSM/UMTS/LTE radio technology
• Detailed knowledge of GSM / UMTS / LTE system design and principles, the Logical and Physical layers of GSM / UMTS / LTE radio interface and RF propagation principles
• Good knowledge and understanding of radio network planning & optimisation techniques
• Knowledge for appropriate architecture and technology selection, multi-tier application design and development
• Understanding of protocol analysers, TEMS test tools, OSS Statistics, Call data records and Radio Optimisation tools
• Understand principles of software development and programming
• Detailed knowledge of Information Technology trends and best practices with a basic knowledge of telecommunication system trends

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

•  Minimum of 3 year tertiary degree/diploma (preferred recently graduated or completed Honors Degree in Engineering)
• Fluent in English and language of country preferable

Experience:

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a area of specialisation
• Experience with SQL scripting and working with computer databases
• Experience working in a medium-sized organization
