PHD Research Internship at Human Sciences Research Council (HRSC)

Job Advert Summary   

Three PhD Research Internship is currently available. The PhD Research Intern Programme in the HSRC provides the successful candidate with an opportunity to further develop their research expertise by working with subject experts and project specialists. The research internship experience is intensive and seeks mature individuals who are able to work independently as well as part of a team. While appointees will be exposed to a wide variety of project-related research, they will be expected to complete their thesis within three years. Time is set aside for this purpose.

Minimum Requirements    
Key requirements:

• Applicants must be in possession of a Master’s degree in the Social Sciences, Public Health, Epidemiology or Biostatistics and be registered or be eligible for registration for a Ph.D, at a recognised South African or an international equivalent institution.
• A sound grounding in research methods and previous experience in research and data analysis will be a strong recommendation
• Proficiency in or working experience with some of the following data software packages: STATA, Epi Info, SPSS, Nvivo, AtlasTI or other relevant statistical packages
• Ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines.

In addition to being registered for a PhD degree at a recognised South African university and currently working on their degrees, or eligible for registration at a recognised South African university, research interns are required to participate in all aspects of the research process as they work with other staff on different research projects.

Duties & Responsibilities    

Among other duties, they will participate in the following activities under supervision:

• Support the research and research-related work of the HSC Programme
• Assist with the conceptualisation and execution of research projects
• Assist with the formulation of research questions and writing proposals
• Assist with the submission of research proposals for ethical review
• Collection and analysis of data
• Writing up of research results, research reports and manuscripts for publication
• Presenting research findings at conferences  and other forums
• Management or supervision of research projects
