An LLB degree and admission as an Attorney or Bar Advocate (Passed Bar Examination)
At least 5 years’ post admission experience in a relevant legal environment
Proven experience within a local government environment will be an added advantage
Knowledge of local government legislation, policies and procedures
Valid driver’s licence
Excellent attention to detail and communication skills
Ability to simultaneously work on multiple tasks with minimum supervision
Ability to diligently work on high volumes of work under considerable pressure
Ability to manage and advise various stakeholders within the environment of local government
Key Performance Areas
Provide high level legal direction and services to Council, Council committees, line departments and political structures;
Provide an effective and efficient legal compliance function by ensuring legal compliance with Constitutional obligations and the provisions of applicable National and Provincial legislation as well as by-laws and policies of the City;
Conduct extensive research and legal problem solving;
Researching all relevant legislation, case law and articles in order to provide sound and up to date legal advice and direction;
Draft and provide sustainable legal opinions based on analysis and findings of research;
Makes final interpretive decisions on legal issues in variable and unpredictable circumstances;
Ensures the maintenance and upkeep of all records and information;
Effective and efficient case management, by finalizing matters within a set turnaround time;
Draft and review legal documents and legal agreements;
Protect/promote the legal interests of the City and safeguard it against legal risk.
