    Simulation Engineer

    The Role
    Hatch is looking for an energetic self-started to add to our team of global discrete event simulation (DES) experts. The DES team is responsible for doing simulation based logistics analysis for projects in the mining, metals and transportation industries. The position can be located in Johannesburg. The successful candidate will have 5 or more years’ experience developing simulation models and working on simulation projects, a broad knowledge of mining, minerals processing, material handling systems, train and truck transport solutions and port operations. Previous experience in process control or operational management would be beneficial. Knowledge of Excel, VBA, Arena, Simio, AnyLogic is desirable, experience with other simulation software is necessary.

    Responsibilities

    • Perform simulation projects mostly focused on supporting engineering projects from concept, pre-feasibility, bankable feasibility phases. This includes problem formulation, data gathering and analysis, model building, scenario testing, multi team design workshops and reporting. Study work might also include reviewing existing operations to support performance enhancement studies.
    • Help with business development by means of response to requests for proposals from clients, participation in marketing drives and technical conferences.
    • Designs and develops accurate and valid computer-based models of mining operations, processing plants, material handling systems, train and truck transport networks and port operations
    • Helps drive the adoption of standard simulation processes across regional simulation teams.
    • Clearly communicates complex principles, ideas, and concepts. Skillfully uses verbal communication to build customer confidence and understanding.
    • Attends industry conferences, seminars, etc., and reads trade journals to stay current of current/future operating strategies and technologies as they relate to Hatch and our client’s business.

    What We Are Looking For

    • A B.Eng (or equivalent) is required, with above average academic performance

    Electrical Engineer

    As The Successful Candidate, You Will

    • Develop a thorough understanding of the project requirements as they relate to scope, schedule and cost
    • Assist in the preparation and development of project specific procedures
    • Define the electrical system requirements to achieve the project results and monitor effectiveness
    • Prepare a list of engineering deliverables and time based functions to facilitate the planning and control of the engineering budget
    • Develop the electrical work plan for insertion into the project specific execution plan
    • Develop and maintain the project scope of work documentation and revisions as required during the design evolution

    You Bring To The Role

    • Minimum 10 - 15 years’ relevant experience
    • The successful candidate should have a BSc/B Eng or B Tech Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Professional Registration with an approved engineering council or other region equivalent, a post-graduate qualification in Electrical Engineering,
    • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary environment on large projects in the mining, mineral processing, oil & gas, power, infrastructure sectors and/or heavy industrial projects
    • Engineering and design experience in HV primary distribution and reticulation systems, consumer switch yards and switchgear, transformers, large motor power circuits and Low Voltage (LV) electrical distribution systems, MCCs, lighting & small power, earthing and lightning protection.
    • Extensive use of electrical design software platforms (tools) for power system modeling and studies, protection coordination schemes, earthing (grounding) studies, etc. e.g. ETAP, DigSilent, CDEGS, EasyPower, SKM
    • Sound understanding of regulations, design codes and technical standards
    • A high degree of understanding of interdisciplinary dependencies related to the discipline
    • Extensive experience in the use of procedures and workflows in the execution of projects

    Project Manager

    As The Successful Candidate, You Will

    • Displays and actively promotes behaviour aligned to Hatch’s goal of achieving a total safety culture by:
    1. Participating in investigation of all serious incidents reported and ensuring that all follow-up actions are carried out.
    2. Participating in audits of work areas.
    3. Attending all identified safety training.
    4. Acting as a mentor for the implementation of Hatch safety standards to contractors.
    • Develops and obtains sign-off from client on Project Execution Plan (PEP) and Client’s Requirement Specification.
    • Develops and resources an appropriate organization structure, and ensures that the entire project team has the required resources for the work.
    • Provides leadership to the project and creates a highly committed and aligned team environment with all who can influence the project’s outcomes.
    • Ensures governance on the project, specifically compliance to Hatch and client delegations of authority, procedures and policies. Authorizes all commitments of expenditure on the project (subject to agreed delegation), and approves payment of invoices, manages claims responses and settlement processes.
    • Develops a detailed scope, cost and schedule control baseline, and manages any project changes in terms of this agreed control baseline.
    • Carries clear responsibility and accountability for delivery of the project goals as set down by the client/project director. Coordinates all client contacts, including major correspondence between Hatch and the client, and maintains working relationships at all levels throughout the period of the project.
    • Monitors and controls all contractual commitments to assure that all work is being performed in accordance with the specifications, drawings, terms of the contract and client expectations.
    • Conducts regular project progress and client meetings to review the progress and issues in all disciplines of the project.
    • Establishes and ensures that the processes for effective scope control (i.e. Trend and Change Management) for the project are in place and that these processes are agreed by the Client and they are managed in accordance with Hatch Best Practice.
    • Establishes and manages processes for the early identification of any potential changes to the Hatch prime contract and ensures that those changes are identified to the Client. Ensures that appropriate contractual changes are formally authorized by the Client.
    • Ensures that Hatch’s standard suite of tools and procedures are properly set-up and deployed at the project. Variances from Hatch PLP standard practice must be approved by the PDG Regional Director.
    • Ensures that project and tollgate reviews are scheduled, prepared for and held in accordance with the Hatch Project Lifecycle Process for the project or study’s particular Front End Loading Phase.
    • Directs and reviews all discipline functions throughout the project lifecycle and ensures that the discipline leads actively manage best practices within each of their fields.
    • Ensures that the required business and workplace integration activities occur. Specifically, that project documentation (contractual, engineering, maintenance and workplace change related) is managed (received, reviewed, comments incorporated, responded and incorporated in plant records).
    • Obtains client's acceptance of the work and sign-off for the completed project. Is responsible for the preparation and submission of the final project close out report, and prompt closeout of the prime contract.
    • Establishes and manages the invoicing process with the Client, to ensure that all invoices are effectively delivered to the Client with the relevant and agreed backup, to ensure efficient process by the Client for payment of the works executed by Hatch.
    • Ensures compliance to the project Environmental Management Plan.

    Engineering Manager

    The Engineering Manager is responsible for engineering systems and the delivery of all technical deliverables to achieve the project objectives within the specified timeframe and budget. The Engineering Manager reports to the Project Manager and provides ultimate direction to Area Engineers and Discipline Engineers on engineering related matters.

    Key Responsibilities

    As the successful candidate you will have:

    • Contribute to the development of the Project Execution Plan (PEP) together with the project leadership team (including procurement, project controls, construction, and commissioning), and allocate roles and responsibilities.
    • Ensure the scope of work is developed and an effective change management system is in place.
    • Develop the engineering budget to meet the scope and execution plan for the project.
    • Develop the engineering work packages (EWPs) for all deliverables and time-based functions.
    • Develop an achievable engineering schedule to meet project requirements using the EWPs.
    • Develop the engineering manpower plan to meet the engineering schedule with the Project Manager.
    • Review and approve the project’s facility description document which describes the scope of the facilities.
    • Provide input into the project monthly report with respect to design progress, cost and issues of concern and recommend changes if required to achieve overall objectives.
    • Coordinate with Procurement, Construction and Commissioning personnel early in the design effort to obtain their input and conduct any necessary reviews.
    • Make contact with client management at key points throughout project to ensure that engineering deliverables are meeting client requirements.
    • Regularly review and appraise the structure of the engineering project team in terms of its ability to meet short- and long-term objectives, and institute appropriate changes.
    • Ensure that training is planned, budgeted and implemented for resources assigned to the project.
    • Assume responsibility for the engineering administrative function, directing Area Engineers, Discipline Engineers and other groups engaged in inter-related engineering responsibilities.
    • Direct and review the engineering activities to ensure that work quality is satisfactory and appropriate technical personnel development programs are conducted.
    • Raise safety awareness and ensure the design for safety principles are applied to the project.
    • Ensure engineering risk assessments and HAZOPs are carried out and all identified issues are addressed.
    • Arrange and facilitate design reviews and participate as required in engineering, management and construction reviews.
    • Coordinate quality audit verifications to ensure compliance with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures for all design activities. Instigate corrective actions as required.
    • Cooperate with the Global Engineering practice of other Regions as directed on matters involving sharing of available expertise.

    Qualifications And Experience

    • BSc/BEng degree in an engineering discipline.
    • Registration as a Professional Engineer with ECSA.
    • Typically 15 years’ experience in a multi-disciplinary environment on major projects with specific focus on mining and processing.
    • Typically 5 years’ experience in managing design engineering teams working on major projects.
    • An extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, design, applications of engineering processes and materials, and engineering applications of current engineering technologies.
    • General knowledge of industry, regulatory standards and design criteria in engineering disciplines.
    • Ability to plan, coordinate and organise at an advanced level.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of project planning, controls and understanding of multi-discipline interdependencies.
    • Knowledge of drawing production and document control methodologies.
    • Knowledge of progress assessment and measurement and engineering control strategies.
    • Ability to adapt to constant change and accommodate high pressure situations to support the team in meeting project objectives.

    Refractory Engineer

    As The Successful Candidate, You Will

    • Primary responsibility for providing technical leadership on projects with respect to the refractory design for pyrometallurgical vessels. This includes responsibility for material selection, bricking arrangements, thermal and mechanical analysis, specifications, vendor selection, quality assurance during fabrication and installation as well as forensic analysis and troubleshooting of existing refractory linings.
    • Define and contribute to project(s) scope, costs and benefits, schedule and implementation strategy.
    • Technically manage the Project Team consisting of a mix of internal resources, consultants, and contractors.
    • Review and approve drawings; oversee others responsible for update and creation of the drawings.
    • Conduct refractory inspections at the supplier prior to them being delivered to the plant.

    • Assist leadership team through review of the relevant sections of proposals for key projects.

    You Bring To The Role

    • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (preferably with a strong focus on material science or ceramics)
    • A minimum of 10 years practical experience in production and use of refractory materials in pyrometallurgical applications with excellent working knowledge of pyrometallurgical vessel design, operation and maintenance.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills (both oral and written) are required due to frequent interaction with management, technical personnel, manufacturing personnel, vendors and contractors.
    • Strong organizational skills are required to meet multiple task targets.
    • This individual should have leadership skills to manage contractors, control budgets, and maintain scheduled commitments
    • Good working knowledge of technical aspects of furnace design in closely related areas (e.g. Refractory Lead must understand the impacts of, and on, the furnace structural containment).

    Project Control Manager - JHB

    Project Control Manager to be based in Johannesburg. In this role you will be assigned to a project leading a team of planning engineers, cost engineers and estimators. You will be responsible for all project control functions through a project from the prefeasibility to execution phase.

    • Studying and understanding all relevant project documents and conditions.
    • Establishing and defining job orientated project control procedures and reporting requirements

    • Cost Control – Ability to understand composite Project budgets, forecasting final costs and the control of the budget i.e. Commitment and Actuals. Full management of Project Trends and Changes to determine legitimacy and estimated impact to project schedule and budget. Management of the usage of Project Allowances i.e. Contingency, Escalation and Forex. Cash-flow monitoring.
    • Planning & Scheduling – Ability to read and understand Project Schedules to ensure a true reflection of the Project progress and forecasted dates. Ability to verify impact of Project Changes to Project Schedule.
    • Quantity Surveying – Knowledge of Quantity Surveying principals and Standard Systems of Measurement. Ability to verify progress payments, final invoices, escalation and Forex calculations.

    Preferred

    • Post graduate qualifications in Management or other professional certification

    Construction Manager

    As The Successful Candidate, You Will

    • be responsible for the overall planning, direction, organization, and budgeting of all construction on the project to the highest safety and quality levels within time and costs constraints. The Construction Manager participates in the conceptual development of a construction project and oversees organization, scheduling and implementation strategy.

    • Liaises with Client team, Engineers and Contractors to deliver the project in a safe manner, on time and within budget
    • Liaison between Contractor and Engineers to resolve field engineering queries
    • Develop site organization and staffing requirements required to execute construction activities within project schedule and acceptable costs

    Qualifications And Experience

    • National Diploma/Degree in Engineering
    • Minimum of 12 to 15 years’ experience in construction of which 5 to 7 years should be Construction Management
    • Experience in the EPCM mining and construction environment
    • Demonstrated health and safety management focus in the construction phase of project delivery, and extensive knowledge of health and safety management procedures, safe work practices, and applicable legislation
    • Registration as Professional Construction Manager with SACPCMP or equivalent will be advantageous
    • Strong leadership skills, the ability to lead a team and fit into a team environment
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
    • Effective report writing skills, planning and organizational skills
    • Well-developed communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills

The Lead Structural Engineer provides leadership and assists in the resolution of all technical issues related to the discipline.
