    Protection Services Operations Lead - North West

    Role Context

    Operational Management

    • Manage the implementation of the security operational strategy to minimise and eliminate security risks whilst ensuring optimal utilisation of staffing resources.
    • Collaborate with senior management across the plants to develop strategies to ensure the alignment of Protection Services to business strategies and objectives.
    • Lead the implementation of workforce planning strategies and initiatives and the setting up of teams to promote optimal utilisation of staffing resources.
    • Prepare and present formal and informal security briefings to Management, corporate communication, and protection services team in line with strategic requirements to safeguard people, assets and infrastructure.
    • Collaborate with the Protection Services Manager to develop crowd management and control strategies and lead the implementation thereof to mitigate security breaches and protect assets and employees in case of community unrests and protests.

    Resource Management

    • Provide input into required changes in resources (financial or non-financial) to enable the achievement of team and/or own objectives.
    • Determine resource needs of the team and/or own area of work to achieve business outcomes.
    • Request and allocate required assets and/or resources for the fulfilment of work objectives to guarantee quality outputs.
    • Monitor the use of assets and resources within the team and own area of responsibility, to ensure assets and resources are consistently and appropriately utilised and managed.
    • Provide staff with day-to-day direction and tasks aligned with Departmental procedures, to enable the usage of less resources more efficiently.

    People Management

    • Create and maintain a conducive work environment by appropriately applying Human Resources policies and procedures to ensure optimum performance is realised for the benefit of the Department and, by extension, the organisation.
    • Lead the team according to TM’s leadership principles and values throughout the entire employee life cycle (performance management, reward etc) to ensure, inter alia, a high-performance culture.
    • Coach, mentor and train teams and drive efforts to ensure adequate training and skills development is in place to improve employee performance.
    • Manage a high-performance culture for the security department by providing critical and timely feedback (both positive and critical), enabling individuals to improve and work as effectively as possible to meet operational goals.
    • Implement clear human capability and accountability frameworks within the security department in line with TM’s people management strategies.
    • Lead the implementation of a performance management plan that optimises delivery and builds a culture of accountability, recognition and fairness.
    • Manage, motivate and lead direct reports and undertake monthly performance reviews of all staff to ensure a consistent performance tracking and put development plans in place to create a high performing team and a conducive employee climate.
    • Lead the identification and development of talent by ensuring adequate staffing, providing regular mentoring, coaching and training in order to ensure a competent and capable workforce in line with TM’s people strategies.
    • Financial Management
    • Comply with all financial, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and other Tharisa Minerals (TM) regulations and policies by facilitating the right actions, to reduce financial risk in the Department.
    • Co-develop and manage the security department’s operational budget to ensure that the department’s strategies including procurement and maintenance of surveillance equipment, access control, CCTV and drones are adequately budgeted for.
    • Develop and manage a functional budget for the department to ensure that the strategic deliverables, operational plans and minor projects are adequately budgeted for.
    • Lead the implementation of effective inventory control, financial control and management of costs in order to minimise expenditure and report on cost efficiency.

    Stakeholder Relations

    • Communicate with all relevant Departments on issues of the area of speciality. Liaise across the relevant Departments by engaging with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure all stakeholders remain abreast of Departmental objectives, any potential derailers are appropriately managed and duplication of work is avoided.
    • Communicate with internal and/or external stakeholders, where required, to achieve work objectives and to maintain relationships.
    • Manage relationships with the community and relevant stakeholders to ensure safety of the mine’s infrastructure, assets and teams during planned protests and shutdowns.

    Compliance, Risk and Safety  

    • Develop an appropriate plant specific Risk Management Policy and appropriate Procedures and Standards (Codes of Practice).
    • Drive the adoption of the legal and compliance requirements by assessing staff and recommend training to empower and capacitate employees.
    • Oversee the management of certification deviations and lead the addressing of the recorded deviations to ensure adherence to safety, risk and compliance regulations.
    • Lead the submission and inspection of the occurrence books, registers, security systems, risk registry, weigh bridge inspections, equipment and assets to maintain an up to date record of events and mitigate recurring risk and safety issues.
    • Lead the interdepartmental collaboration and coordination efforts to develop evacuation drills and escape route in case of emergencies and operational requirements i.e. blasting and lead the execution of the drills to mitigate risks and fatalities.

    Process and Technology

    • Oversee the installation, monitoring and repairing of cameras and the security systems linked technology to ensure up to date feeds.
    • Manage the operations and processes with regards to the access systems (boom gates) control and utilisation of breathalysers for access control in line with TM’s compliance and procedures.
    • Oversee all security operations and procedures by managing the protection services officers, supervisors, control room and reaction unit personnel to ensure physical security requirements and processes are adhered to.
    • Identify and assess opportunities for partnership policing and recommend relevant actions and initiatives to reduce all priority crimes.
    • Provide guidance to staff regarding security actions during Employee Related (ER) related actions such as strikes and protests to mitigate risk and reduce property and asset

    Requirements

    Qualifications:

    • B. Degree (NQF 7) in Security Risk Management or equivalent

    Certifications:

    • PSIRA Grade A certificate
    • Firearm competency certificate

    Job specific experience:

    • 5 – 8 years’ experience in security in a mining environment

    Exploration Geologist - North West

    Role Context

    Continuous Improvement

    • Develop and deliver robust procedures, processes, systems and capabilities in the resource evaluation domain, to support the workflow of resource evaluation.
    • Identify, adopt and internally disperse leading/best practice to enable the development and implementation of plans for the improvement of current systems.
    • Recommend and implement technology improvements to sustain improved performance in the resource evaluation domain.

    Exploration Geology

    • Perform detailed geological data review, by analysing geographic locations in search of natural resources, to determine prospective targets.
    • Assess the viability of mining operations by considering geological, environmental and economic factors.
    • Perform geological, structural and regolith mapping to collect data on rock formations, minerology and structural characteristics
    • Oversee soil sampling, trenching and various forms of exploratory drilling to collect core samples for further analysis, ensuring adequate insertion of Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QAQC) samples that enable the performance of geological interpretation.
    • Compile and analyse exploration data by reviewing all relevant sources of information to recommend appropriate follow up programs that are able to find minable commodities for Tharisa Minerals.
    • Use an understanding of the practical mining implications of geological decisions to inform the design and development of mines and determine the most efficient and effective way to extract metal or minerals.
    • Analyse geological data using specialised software and tools to create detailed geological models for Mineral Resource Estimation.
    • Integrate and optimise periodical mining models for grade control, reserves and resources.
    • Develop detailed Grade Control Models and Resource Models for the mine, projects and scenario evaluation, where required, to provide a predictive view of the distribution, quality and quantity of mineral resources.
    • Validate data for the resource evaluation process, by checking the accuracy and appropriateness of the results at each modelling stage, to support accurate predictive models.
    • Conduct geological evaluation of resources, including the identification of risks to create signed off Estimations of Mineral Resource and Reserves.

    Financial Monitoring and Control

    • Prepare budgets and monitor expenditure against budget allocations to complete projects on budget and within planned time frames.
    • Consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to select the most appropriate course of action.

    Reconciliation

    • Develop reconciliation classification and reconciliation techniques from mineral resource, ore reserve, grade control model and metallurgy recoveries models, to manage variance between planned and actual estimated results.
    • Develop and understand the reconciliation factors to determine the ability of mining operations to produce the tonnage, grade and contained metal that as per the estimations.

    Reporting

    • Provide quality technical advice, including the review of major plans and proposals, by drafting comprehensive reports for review by senior management and regulatory agencies, to communicate the potential risks, benefits and uncertainties associated with different mining prospects.  
    • Compile Mineral Resource Statements annually (and as required), as well as Competent Person’s report and supporting documentation, to ensure compliance with relevant reporting codes and standards including applicable legal requirements.

    Requirements

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor of Science Honours Degree (NQF8) in Geology   
    • Advanced Degree in Geology with a specialisation in mineralogy, petrology, or economic geology
    • Member of professional body (SACNASP)

    Certifications:

    • Able to qualify as a Competent Person in a commodity.

    Job specific experience:

    • A minimum of between fifteen to twenty (15-20) years of experience in an exploration and/or mining environment, of which at least three (3) years at a Senior Management level
    • Working knowledge of geological software (e.g., ArcGIS, MicroMine, Leapfrog, Surpac, Datamine, Sable etc.) and project peer review
    • Proficiency in MS Office
    • Good track record of constructive interfacing with and influencing personnel from all related functions/departments
    • Resource Modelling and Estimation experience with emphasis on Chrome and PGEs
    • Proficient in geological software (Sable, Datamine, Arc GIS)
    • General survey knowledge is advantageous
    • International geological experience is advantageous
    • Good understanding of SAMREC/SAMVAL Codes
