Job Description

• Media24 has a vacancy for a digital savvy journalist with excellent page layout skills in its Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) offices.

What you’ll be doing:

• Page layout of all EP Media Publications
• Producing stories for print editions as well as social media.
• Updating EP Media social media and online platforms
• Assisting the online and print team with uploading content when required.

Main purpose:

• To produce relevant, exclusive and factually correct news reports and analysis for News24 and its national audience on court proceedings in Pretoria’s high and lower courts.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Produce original fast and slow court reporting and ideas for news, feature and analysis stories;
• Report on breaking news stories from Pretoria’s courtrooms;
• Interview and report on the experiences of victims and witnesses of crime;
• Write quality news and feature articles, adhering to strict deadlines and News24’s style;
• Adhere to the quality, style and content standards as laid out and required by the particular publication
• Live reporting into News24 live blogs on developing stories;
• Secure newsmakers for in-depth interviews on topical issues.

Skills & Competencies:

• Established network of contacts in Pretoria’s courts;
• Strong command of English;
• Solid understanding of the law and judicial processes in South Africa;
• Able to work under pressure and to strict deadlines;
• Good time management, the ability to multitask effectively and complete tasks timeously;
• Sound news judgment;
• Knowledge of the online news environment and digital publishing tools, including mobile video and photos;
• Detail orientation;
• Good people skills;
• Quality orientation and the ability to deliver clean copy, and
• Understanding of the SA Press Code and adherence to our code of ethics.

Minimum Requirements: 

• Relevant tertiary qualification;
• At least 7 years’ experience in court reporting in Pretoria;
• Excellent general knowledge;
• Insightful knowledge of Pretoria and the judicial system;
• Insightful knowledge of the major crimes affecting South Africa;
• Insightful knowledge of the workings of the criminal justice system;
• Strong knowledge of topical issues and current affairs;
• Demonstrable network of contacts in all levels of law enforcement and/or the courts
• Valid driver’s licence;

Main Purpose of the Job

• Netwerk24 is looking for an excellent general reporter to report from Johannesburg. The reporter must be able to source, investigate and report. The journalist should have an existing and extensive contact network. The suitable candidate will have the ability to get the story behind the story and gather unique information that is not available elsewhere. The journalist should have a good understanding of digital journalism, be able to record video and take photos. The suitable candidate will be able to work quickly and under pressure.  The successful candidate must also be willing to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and public holidays from time to time.

Skills and Competencies

• The ability to work comfortably in a digital, multi-platform environment, with skills in social media, photography and videography.
