    Senior Planning Engineer

    Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently recruiting for a Senior Planning Engineer with extensive experience in the Mining and Metals industry.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Understand all relevant documentation pertaining to the project including scope of services, conditions of contract, project execution plan, project schedule, key quantities, etc.
    • Work within standard project planning / scheduling procedures. Ensure that these procedures comply with contractual reporting requirements and, if not, modify accordingly
    • Prepare activity plans to accomplish all work required by the procedures
    • Liaise with client project control personnel as necessary
    • Timely preparation and issue of:
    • Overall project schedule
    • Project network
    • Manpower projection plan
    • Critical equipment lists / schedules
    • Progress s-curves and tabulations
    • Manhour / manpower histograms
    • Short term looks ahead schedules
    • Monthly progress report including narrative
    • Ensure that all involved parties participate in preparation of items described above and that they agree to their respective elements and approve documents where necessary
    • Produce current physical progress reports and final job statistics
    • Prepare and issue project action reports (monthly) to Project Controls Manager
    • Maintain accurate schedule and control curves in an updated condition and prepare forecasts of trends
    • When nominated, act as a sponsor to trainees, regularly review their progress and make periodic reports to the Project Controls Manager

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Strong understanding of "Earned Value Performance Measurement" and Commodity Installed methods
    • Wide project planning experience in multi - discipline mining and minerals processing projects and studies
    • EPC / EPCM experience in either a consulting or construction contractor environment
    • Circa 10 years relevant experience considered essential to meet the demands of this position

    Piping Engineer

    Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently recruiting for Piping Engineers with extensive experience in the Oil & Gas, Petrochemical or similar sector of the industry to provide support to our Client in the execution of projects.

    Key Accountabilites & Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for the design and approval of all piping work on assigned projects.
    • Responsible for preparation and approval of project related standards and job notes.
    • Ensure that engineering activities on assigned projects are executed within budgeted manhours and approved schedules in compliance with project procedures, standards and specifications and in accordance with procedures and the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of South Africa.
    • Review and approve project schedules with the Project Engineer to see that all dates, rates of progress and design periods are realistic.
    • Prepare and approve project specific standards and job notes.
    • Prepare requisition index for special piping items, indicating planned issue date for each requisition. Update and reissue monthly.
    • Prepare pipe stress index. Update and reissue monthly.
    • Check piping drawing index for piping work.
    • Prepare and approve general notes requisitions for piping work.
    • Design and requisition special piping items.
    • Prepare support sketches for the drawing office.
    • Check and approve piping bulk requisitions from MTO.
    • Review and approve all piping drawings and ensure that the quality of design and drawings produced for enquiry and fabrication purposes is of satisfactory standard.
    • Prepare technical bid analysis for special piping items.
    • Check and approve piping bulk technical evaluations from MTO.
    • Attend coordination meetings and engineering review meetings with supplier as required.
    • Review document requirements and issue dates for major equipment with suppliers and assist Procurement Department in compiling a Supplier’s Document Index.
    • Assist Procurement Department with the expediting of supplier documents.
    • Review and approve supplier documents for piping and distribute.
    • Review in conjunction with Procurement Department all claims by supplier for an increase in the engineering scope of work.
    • Give guidance to client, project engineers, other specialist engineers and inspectors on piping engineering matters. Review piping aspects of package unit supplier’s drawings as requested by the engineer responsible for the equipment.
    • Ensure that piping engineering operations are complete in accordance with the approved project schedule and within allocated manhours.
    • Advise the hod Piping Engineer of any slippages and their causes and proposed corrective action.
    • Advise the hod Piping Engineer of any technical problems and unresolved differences with other groups.
    • Co-ordinate with Procurement Department and ensure certified drawings are available in time to meet the engineering schedules.
    • Notify the Project Engineer or all deficiencies in the flow of data or other basic information required for execution of work.
    • Provide progress report information, at the required frequency and with the required content, to the Project Engineer.
    • Provide information where necessary to estimating the cost of contract changes, Alert the Project Engineer / Project Manager to circumstances considered to be subject to contract change.
    • Follow up piping construction work on project sites to ensure correct interpretation of designs regarding installation. Resolve any piping problems arising during commissioning.
    • Keep abreast of development in the piping engineering field.
    • Suggest ways to improve efficiency, costs and service in the execution of projects.
    • Assist where necessary in the compilation of operating manuals and mechanical catalogues.

    Skills / Qualifications

    • BSc, BEng or BTech Engineering
    • PrEng registration
    • +8 relevant post graduate experience in the Oil & Gas, Petrochemical or similar sector of the industry

    Site Planner

    Overview / Responsibilities
    Wood is currently recruiting for a Site Planner with extensive experience in the Mining and Metals industry.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Comply with all requirements of the Project Management Plan (PMP) relating to duties and responsibilities undertaken by the Planner. Assist the Project Controls Manager to determine and establish resources needed to carry out the planning function for the project
    • Assist with the development of planning procedures for inclusion in the PMP in association with the Project Controls Manager, Project Manager and Client as required. Comply with and carry out regular reviews of the procedures and update as required
    • Assist with the review of bid milestones and overall completion timetable in conjunction with the project scope at award and identify any anomalies or inconsistencies and report same. Assist the Project Controls Manager to determine the required level of programme details
    • Assist the Project Team identify key critical constraints, interfaces and establish key milestone dates in agreement with the Project Controls Manager, Project Manager and Client. Maintain productivity norms, time standards and control measurements for all disciplines in liaison with cost engineering
    • Assist with developing the Basis of Schedule for authorization by the Project Controls Manager, Project Manager and Client. Assist with maintaining the interface between Convero and the schedule
    • Based on the agreed WBS assist with the preparation and regular updates to the project implementation schedule, (PIS), covering Client activities, engineering, procurement, supply / manufacture, construction and commissioning considering all contractual milestones and completion dates
    • Maintain and manage control curves. Assist managers as directed by the Project Controls Manager, as required; in planning functions associated with activities under their responsibility and prepare Look - ahead Schedules
    • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of a schedule for all design activities clearly indicating information interfaces and deliverable timetable fully integrated with Convero. Identify the critical path(s) in the PIS and the non - critical operations where float is short duration and a risk exists for the activity to become critical
    • Review all bids and / or bid schedules received for the project, compare the schedule or dates provided in the bid document against the PIS and report findings to the Project Controls Manager and Supply Chain and Contracts Manager. Ensure completion milestone dates in awarded work are reflected in the PIS
    • Integrate contractor’s and supplier’s schedules into PIS. Review changes to contractor’s schedules, enter the details in the PIS when approved and report any abnormality or area of concern. Review proposed change management time implications in conjunction with the Trend Cost Control Officer and document the result. Modify the PIS if changes are approved
    • Attend project and contract kick off, progress, cost control and planning meetings and implement changes in the PMP or area schedules as directed. Review reports and information prepared by construction personnel, contractors and suppliers in accordance with project requirements e.g. manning, equipment resources employed, progress, etc. and report any concerns which may lead to schedule non - compliance
    • Extract progress data from the project processes, measure and report on progress, update the program and in consultation with the Project Controls Manager, assist with the interpretation of the output and assist with the development of time recovery strategy options where delays or potential delays will affect the completion date of a contract or the project overall
    • Continuously assess project schedule trends against Baseline Schedule 'S' curves and together with the Project Controls Manager produce action plans to address project slippages, adverse trends or to cater for changing project scope / objectives and communicate these to the Project Team
    • Assist with reviews of the schedule portions of contractor’s extra work claims and prepare details for discussion and / or inclusion in any response. Revise schedule when events occur that make the current schedule impossible to follow & report changes
    • Assist Cost Engineers to prepare and maintain cash - flow forecast. Assist with production of management reports on the project time status and resources as requested and for the monthly status reports
    • Maintain detail area schedules, bar charts, resource graphs etc. as and when required by the Project Manager. Verify network logic against project strategy utilizing input from all disciplines. Carry out priority work established by the Project Controls Manager, maintain open Communication channels and ensure cooperation and coordination with disciplines in the Project Controls Group and other project personnel

    Site Structural Superintendent

    Overview / Responsibilities
    Wood is currently recruiting for a Site Structural Superintendent (structural, mechanical, platework and piping) for a Mining & Minerals project site in Rustenburg.
    Wood has been awarded the EPCM contract for the Vulcan Process for Aroxo (A Tharisa Minerals Company). The Arxo Vulcan Project is a 500 t / h Fine Chrome Recovery Plant located nearly 35 km east of Rustenburg, South Africa. Tharisa’s Vision 2020 projects are targeting an increase in Tharisa Minerals’ production to 200 kozpa of PGMs and 2.0 Mtpa of chrome concentrates in CY2020, on an annualized basis. To achieve this vision, the R&D team has developed the Vulcan process to extract the fine chrome from current in line tailings from the combined feed of the Genesis and Voyager plants. The primary aim of the Vulcan plant is to increase chrome recovery from the current 65% to 82% at the Tharisa Mine, capable of adding an additional 400 ktpa (ca. 28% of current production) of chrome concentrate output.

    Main Purpose of the Role:

    • Responsible for the structural, mechanical, platework and piping areas on the construction site

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Review SMPP contractors QA and QMS manuals, plans and procedures for compliance with national codes and standards (for SMPP disciplines)
    • Ensure that structural, mechanical, platework and piping construction activities are conducted in accordance with procedures and set standards
    • Monitor / audit contractors to ensure prescribed quality and safety requirements are met / maintained
    • Resolve all matters associated with quality and safety which may affect the project. Prepare construction specific procedures and work instructions as required
    • Establish a Quality Control policy to provide documentary evidence of the quality attained on the project
    • Witness, inspection and surveillance checks in accordance with the Quality Control Plan and the requirements of the Quality Manager
    • Ensuring that all Quality Control checks and tests are instigated, with records maintained and available and area released in accordance with contractors Quality Control Plan
    • Attend contractor progress meetings in order to provide detailed reports and interface between client and Direct Field Labour crews
    • Co - ordinating / communicating various issues among the client / consultants that affect the structural, mechanical, platework and piping engineering design, safety, and regulatory compliance of the work
    • Evaluate / comment on work performed by the company and any sub - contractors to ensure that the work is being executed in accordance with project specifications, and regulatory requirements. Includes review of structural, mechanical, platework and piping design drawings and documents
    • Generate structural, mechanical, platework and piping engineering queries from the company as well as technical information requests
    • Participate in kick off meetings and progress meetings with support sub - contractors and construction crews
    • Ensuring implementation of established procedures
    • Expediting with material control function material delivery, distribution and availability in accordance with planned activities
    • Execution of any legal instruction given to me by a Manager

    Skills / Qualifications
    Education:

    • National Diploma in Mechanical and / or Structural Disciplines

    Technical:

    • A minimum of 15 years’ experience in construction, within the mining / minerals processing environment
    • Experience in providing construction input into projects within an EPCM environment
    • Working experience of the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996

    Other requirements:

    • Ability to travel locally and / or internationally as and when required
    • Previous experience working in a mining environment
    • Experience working on a project governed by the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996
