    Laboratory Technician

    Requirements:

    • Post-Matric qualification - Undergraduate degree in Science (Physics/ Natural Sciences) or related discipline, such as B. Tech Physics; B.Sc. Physics OR Diploma in Physics, Diploma in Instrumentation or similar
    • 3 years’ work experience in a busy laboratory – in teaching or industry context
    • Knowledgeable of Physics laboratory procedures and techniques such as using measurement instruments, working with electronic instruments and elementary electrical systems using fuses, wiring of plugs etc.
    • Experience in use, handling and maintaining of scientific laboratory equipment and apparatus.
    • Experience in laboratory management (inventory, storage, access, and stock usage log)
    • Experience in proper and safe handling of harmful chemicals, substances and hazardous wastes
    • Computer literacy (E-mail, MSWord, MS Excel, MS Access).
    • Good communication, interpersonal and organization skills.
    • Ability to work systematically and accurately.
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
    • Problem-solving skills and ability to de-escalate conflict
    • Health and Safety practices and precautions applicable to the laboratory, including First Aid certification

    N.B. A practical test will form part of the interview process.

    Duties:

    • Preparation of Physics laboratory practicals and demonstrations.  
    • Preparing for practicals, buying consumables, and pre-testing experiments
    • Setting out equipment, ensuring all equipment, components and accessories are available and in good working order, reporting malfunctions and ensuring repair of the equipment.
    • Stocktaking and housekeeping of storerooms.
    • During class be available to assist students and demonstrators with practicals.
    • Ensuring safety of all people involved in the laboratory at all times.
    • Cleaning up after the practical classes including safe disposal of chemicals, and washing and packing away all equipment etc.
    • Maintenance of material safety data sheets for all department chemicals and products.
    • Overall management and supervision of junior technicians and student tutors.
    • Obtaining quotes for equipment, preparing teacher workshops and post graduate classes where needed
    • Managing a loan system for students to borrow equipment for TE and class demonstrations
    • Recruiting and managing allocation of student tutors.

    Secretary

    Requirements:

    • A matriculation certificate
    • Have administration experience, including minute taking, typing
    • Computer literacy
    • At least 3 years of administrative experience

    Preference:

    • Knowledge of Wits systems, including the Oracle system, Symms System and Finance systems,  will be an advantage

    Responsibilities

    • Organizing and managing a busy department al office.
    • Accurate and efficient typing of departmental letters and documents.
    • Financial duties including ordering, and bookkeeping.
    • Administrative work including taking minutes, developing and maintain the filing system, timetables, photocopying, organize meetings, process invoices
    • Reception work including answering the telephone, dealing with queries and taking messages.
    • Contributing to the promotion and development of the department within the university.
